To a large degree the book is composed from entires from the diaries of Charles A. Abbey while he was at sea during the years 1856 to 1860 on-board a number of clipper ships. 286 pages of text, illustrations, and six fold-out maps together with extensive detail on the rigging of clipper vessels.
Journal entries recounting the experiences ofan American merchant seaman during the heyday of merchant sail. While his style is appropriately spare, he manages to convey a clear sense of the quotidian life of the seaman- the seasickness, the terror of work aloft, the comfortably monotony off watch, officers both brutal and kind- on voyages around the Cape to India and around the Horn to California.
