Portrait of Duke Ellington at the piano for a 15-minute short subject film by Universal Pictures in which he and his band play various of his classic numbers, including "Take the 'A' Train".

Vintage original film script by Lawrence Roman, printed wrappers, 11 x 8 1/2" (28 x 22 cm.), brad bound, 119 pp. Stains to outer wrappers, JUST ABOUT FINE in VERY GOOD wrappers.A romance film starring Sidney Poitier as a widowed American doctor living in London who falls in love with the beautiful daughter of an African diplomat, played by Esther Anderson. Bogle, Blacks in American Films, p. 227:"Seldom has a black woman been [up to that point in film history] been permitted to be so relaxed and vulnerable on screen... .Anderson's character, though pure fantasy, is the type any audience could swoon over, and it was a distinctly new depiction of black woman in American films."This was the second film to be directed by Poitier, as he gradually put increasing focus on directing.

Dewey ""Pigmeat"" Markham, John Murray, Percy Verwayen, David Bethea, dir: Sam Newfield; Toddy Pictures. Comedy horror story which is considered a lost film. Story concerned the escapades of Pigmeat and Shorty and their avoidance of paying their rent when, out of the blue, they both inherit money and a house -- the stipulation is that they must spend one night alone in that house, which is most definitely haunted. There were songs included: ""Take Me"", ""Hard Luck Blues"" and ""A Brown Skin Gal is the Best Gal After All"". Star Pigmeat Markham (1904-1981) was a comedian, singer, dancer, and actor, who spent most of his life performing on the ""chitlin' circuit"" of black vaudeville theaters and night clubs. The white audience discovered him in the 1960s after he performed his famous ""Heyeah come da judge"" routine on the NBC show LAUGH-IN. Toddy. No binding. Very Good. [New York]: Toddy Pictures, 1946. Set of twelve (12) 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) photos, there are some scattered pinholes and occasional light creases at edges, VERY GOOD. A substantial set of photos from this Black cast horror comedy, which starred Pigmeat "Alamo" Markham, John Rastus Murray, and William Dillard.

Ralph Cooper, who, at this time, more often served as leading man in Black cast films, wrote the story for this gangster film set in Harlem. Nina Mae McKinney played the film's romantic lead and gets the star treatment in this poster. After her initial triumph in HALLELUJAH (1929), despite being referred to as "the sepia Garbo," she could not find more Hollywood work, and she turned to independently produced, Black cast films like this one.

Poster designed by Kautz commemorating African American agricultural scientist and inventor George Washington Carver, who had died only two years earlier. Although the US government issued many posters during the war to promote purchase of US savings bonds, it is highly unusual to see one like this, which promotes the achievements of an African American.

Pictorial wrappers, oblong folio, 34 pp.in original printed mailing envelope, FINE. A sumptuously illustrated promotional book, replete with excellent color plates, for this film about African American participation in the Civil War.

[New York: Toddy Pictures, 1947]. Vintage original pressbook, 14 x 10 1/2" (36 x 27 cm.), inside opens up to become a large 28 x 20 1/2" (71 x 52 cm.) poster. A few scattered creases and signs of light handling, VERY GOOD+.A Black cast film with a religious theme and a gospel choir for musical uplift.

An unusual morality film, in which a young woman is tempted by the Devil, but righteousness wins out in the end. The film was promoted as having "an all-colored cast of 30 and a choir of 40." That choir interspersed the dramatic sequences with gospel numbers. This card portrays the heroine caught between Satan and God. Richards 432.

Sammy Davis Jr. scored a great success when he premiered this musical, adapted from the Clifford Odets 1937 play, on Broadway in 1964. This poster is for a London revival of the show, FINE.

With various scratches and creases at edges and a few small marginal tears, VERY GOOD-. Morgan Freeman starred, along with the Five Blind Boys of Alabama and various other well-known gospel artists, in this musical stage adaptation of Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, with music by Bob Telson and book and lyrics by Lee Breuer.

Vintage original press kit, 12 x 9", printed folder, ten photos approximately 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) laid in, along with twelve loose inserts, between 1 and 4 pp. each. One page of text tanned, overall NEAR FINE or better.Richard Pryor starred, along with Pam Grier, in this film about African American race car driver Wendell Scott. The studio was promoting this as Pryor's first starring role.

Vintage original press kit, 12 x 9" (31 x 23 cm.), printed folder, fourteen 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white print still photos laid in brown envelope, 11,3,2,2,2,2 pp. Some creasing to edges of folder, NEAR FINE or better. Muhammad Ali starred as himself in a dramatized version of his life story, adapted from Ali's autobiography, THE GREATEST: MY OWN STORY, with screenplay by Ring Lardner, Jr. A number of distinguished African American actors appeared in supporting roles, among them James Earl Jones, Paul Winfield and Roger Mosley.

Unfolded, just about fine.The American posters for the film had a very chaste image of the interracial couple (Sidney Poitier and Katharine Houghton) walking with her hand awkwardly holding on to his left elbow. This Japanese poster much better represents the film's then daring subject matter (and with an image not even used for the film's first Japanese release).
