This is a first US edition of An Encyclopedia of Small Antiques, published in 1975.It was compiled specifically for collectors, and is useful for designers, decorators and art historians. 425 entries, mainly from the last three centuries. 320 pages, 32 colour plates, 350 b/w illustrations.
There's a little bit of wear to the dust jacket the paper is starting to darken. Otherwise perfect.

This is the second printing (UK) of The Encyclopedia of World Sea Power, which was first published in the UK in 1988. It shows and describes the capabilities of submarines, aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, patrol craft, hovercraft, missiles, anti-aircraft weapons, and underwater weapon systems used by the world's navies. It includes 250 color profiles, 500+ photographs and numerous drawings.It's a large heavy book, a former library book, kept in the reference section. It was bought from the library. It has all of the library fittings, which you can remove. It doesn't appear that anyone used it--it's in pristine condition.

This is a first edition (UK/original) of Epic Sea Battles, published in 1975. It was written by the British naval historian William J. Koenig and contains hundreds of photographs, drawings and maps. In discusses 12 battles, beginning with the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and finishing with the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944 (see Contents photo). It is a big book--9 1/2" x 12 3/4" and 256 pages.It has no dust jacket.There is a very small inscription (daughter to father) on the front endpaper.I don't think it has been read.Aside from a few tiny specks on the cover, it is in perfect condition.

From 1978 to 1981, Time-Life Books published a series called 'The Seafarers'. It was 22 volumes, all written by experts in their fields, on different aspects of maritime history.
All are 175-185 pages, all bound in thick black leatherette, all beautifully illustrated with drawings, paintings and photographs.
Of the 22, I have 12 left (the list is below). All are listed here on Biblio. You can buy one, or as many as you like.
Mine are from the first printing. Unless otherwise noted, all are in mint condition.
This one is The Explorers, reviewed as "An excellent book that discusses the Great Age of Exploration, and the voyages of Columbus, da Gama, Magellan and other great explorers."

This is a first edition (UK 1975) of Fighting Ships of World War II, written by the British historian John Norton Westwood. It is an interesting selection of various types of ships from the navies of the warring powers, with descriptions and details. There is a photograph or table on every page.160 pages. I have the dust jacket but it's in terrible condition. The original ownersigned the front endpaper. There is a rub to the edgeof the cover, and a a couple of faint marks on the cover, hence the price. The inside is in perfect condition.

This is a first edition of First to the Front: The Aerial Adventures of 1st Lt. Waldo Heinrichs and the 95th Aero Squadron - 1917-1918.It was written by the journalist Charles Woolley and published in 1999.Publisher's Description:The 95th Aero Squadron was the first American pursuit squadron to fly over the front in March 1918 and 1st Lt. Waldo Heinrichs was one of its original members. This is a first edition of Flora MacDonald: Her Life in the Highlands and America, by the American librarian Elizabeth Gray Vining(1902-1999).
It is a fascinating account of the life a woman who is still revered in Scotland for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from the English after the disastrous defeat at Culloden. She was imprisoned in the Tower of London, released and moved to North Carolina. But her support for the British in the American War of Independence meant that she and her husband were stripped of their lands and forced to return to Scotland.
173 pages, including photos. Also included is a clipping from a magazine article about Bonnie Prince Charlie, inserted by the original owner.
The dust jacket has a lot of wear, but is unclipped. The pages have darkened a little but the book is otherwise in excellent shape.

This is a first edition of Generalissimo Churchill, a personal history of Winston Churchill as warlord. It covers only 1940-1942, when Churchill dominated his generals and the Americans. It is highly critical of Churchill, deeming him an 'evil genius'.There is lots of wear to the dust jacket (unclipped) and some fading to the book. This is a set of two antique books containing 4 books written by the great American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). They were published in 1902, and are brown boards with leather spines. Both are illustrated and both are in excellent condition.Condition of the covers are shown. The first book contains The Marble Faun: Or The Romance of Monte Beni, Hawthorne's last romance (set in Italy), which was published in 1860. There is a mark, either from water or glue, on the front endpaper. Otherwise perfect. The second book contains Fanshawe, Grandfather's Chair and Biographical Stories, as well as a short biography of Hawthorne written by Katharine Lee Bates (known for writing America the Beautiful), who also wrote the introduction in both books.Fanshawe was Hawthorne's first novel. He published it anonymously in 1828 and paid for the printing. It is about his experiences at university.

This is a luxury edition copy of The Grapes of Wrath, the brilliant novel by the American author John Steinbeck (1902-1968). The book, about a family struggling through the Great Depression, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and put Steinbeck over the top to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.It was first published in 1939. Viking division Compass issued this edition in 1958 and it was published as part of the International Collectors Library collection.It is dark navy blue with gilt on the cover and spine. No other adornment of any kind, aside from a bound-in silk bookmark.There is a tiny bump to the bottom right of the cover--you can't see it, you can feel it. And the pages are darkening a little. This is a first edition of The Great Lakes, written by the famed Canadian journalist and historian Pierre Berton (1920-2004). It was published in 1996 and includes hundreds of photographs by the Canadian photographer Andre Gallant.
It is a historical overview, paired with brilliant photography showing the diversity of landscapes, species, and seasons. It is colored by Berton's personal opinions about war, industry, and the environment and is an engrossing read.
Unclipped dust jacket.
There is a little bit of damage to the paper on the spine, one corner of the front cover, and the first front endpaper (see photos).

This is a stated first edition of The Guggenheims: A Family History, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Irwin Unger, and his wife, journalist Debi Unger. It is about the very wealthy American family who made their fortune in the mining industry, and for founding the Guggenheim Museum.

It was published in 2005 and remains a best-seller.

This copy has not been read; its only flaw is some scuffing on the front of the cover, from improper storage. Other than that, it's in pristine condition.

This is a stated first edition of My Life as an Author and Editor by the influential American journalist H.L. Mencken (1880-1956).

It was well-received and was a best-seller for some time--it's now sold in paperback.

This copy is brand new and unread. It's only flaw is due to an issue with the bindery--see photo of the spine.

Other than that, it's perfect. No adornments, plain and elegant.

This is the 2009 reprint of Hearst the Collector, written by Los Angeles County Museum of Art historian Mary L. Levkoff and first published in 2008.
American media baron William Randolph Hearst was an avid art collector. Through the 1920s and 1930s, he amassed the largest private collections of tapestries, antiquities, silver and arms and armor of his time--his collection furnished six palatial homes.
This book takes the reader inside each, featuring the most interesting pieces, now dispersed among the world's museums.

This is a 1967 original copy of Hello, Dolly! - The New Broadway Cast Recording, starring Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway, and Gower Champion. It was produced by David Merrick; music and lyrics by Jerry Herman.There are no scratches to the LP; there is minor wear to the edges of the cover. Otherwise perfect condition.

This is the 1982 re-print (1973) of The History of American Sailing Ships, written by the American naval architect and curator of maritime history at the Smithsonian Institute Howard I Chapelle (1901-1975). It was originally published in 1935.
It is a great reference for people who are into the details of ships--form, construction etc., and biographies of naval architects.
400 pages, including 200+ photos and drawings by Chapelle, George Wales and Henry Rusk.
It is in near-mint condition; its only deficit is repairs to the (unclipped) dust jacket. The front endpaper is signed, in pencil.

This is a stated First US edition copy of A History of The American People by the English journalist Paul Johnson.It is 1088 pages. Blue boards with gold lettering. There is a little fading to the spine, which is from sitting on a shelf, and minor shelfwear to the (unclipped) dust jacket. But I don't think this book has been read. It's in near-mint condition.
