Classic reference on the art of the woodcut, with emphasis on the revival of the art in We stern Europe during the first quarter of the 20th century. 239 wo odblocks, 9 in color. 177 original illustrations. No. 18 of 1000 copies; a prior owner has neatly written in pencil which woodcuts are originals and which previously published; owner's inked name on front flyleaf, otherwise a fine copy in original paper wraps, subsequently rebound in gray cloth. .

A beautifully illustrated edition with 5 original woodblocks in colors by Ahü, seven b/w vignettes in text. Limited to 890 numbered copies; this copy inscribed from the author to Mr. Hubert A. Guillard.
1st thus, small 4to. [2 ff..] 74 pp… [3 ff]. Published in softcover but rebound here in contemporary ½ black morocco and decorated cloth, gilt titles – the original paper cover with sixth woodcut illustration bound in.

A very clean copy; inscribed by the autho r on fep. André Gill (17 October 1840 – 1 May 1885) Gill was the most popular and important French caricaturist of his time, k nown today mostly for his work for the weekly four-sheet satirica l newspapers La Lune and L’Eclipse from 1865 to 1876. Waging wa r against the monarchy with his cartoons, he also became involved in the Paris Commune, illustrating for Jules Vallès' socialist paper, La Rue. Between 1868 and 1873 more than 60 of his cartoons were censored or suppressed. .

A marvelous treatment. Fine; as new in d/w with some very min or shelf-wear. A near pristine copy. .

James Reid's first published work was a critical and commercial success, regarded as highly sophisticated and emotive. His second work, illustrating the Song of Songs, did not fare well in the declining depression economy. Reid later described lugging his canvases around NYC by bus in an effort to make a sale: "Those depression days were noted for threadbare soles, my shoes no exception, and following the accepted practice I would trim a piece of cardboard to fashion innersoles." He produced no other books and worked as a successful commercial artist for the rest of his life. [1907-1989]
CONDITION: Good; boards tanned at margins and backstrip. Lengthy inked inscription on front pastedown; remnants of removed bookplate on FEP; text block is tight and clean.

The first volume is limited to printing of 2000 copies and the third volume 1800; the second volume has no designation. Plain sewn wrappers, with volume 1 in library binding with original wrappers bound in. A remarkable p ublication consisting of announcements of limited edition illustr ated books to appear between 1925-29, accompanied by samples from the works. [First thus; the true first edition was published in folio form with etchings by another artist.] , 9-1/4”x6”, full vel lum binding, gilt titles and decorations, untrimmed pages. 60 pp. [2 advt] Woodcut decorations and ornaments in the text plus eig ht etchings by Tristam Ellis. Good condition. The covers are soil ed with some spotting and chipping; very lightly warped -- though less than commonly found. [A publisher’s slip notice inside st ates that the book is prone to warping. Losse at the front joint. Prior owner’s bookplate inside front cover. Text block is clea n and bright; some of the tissue guards for the etchings are crea sed. The book is notoriously prone to wear and, despite these def ects’ it is one of the more attractive copies we have seen. .

A tab is pulled at the lower edge, which animates and completely changes the illustration above. Artwork by Nister, who also served as publisher. The facing pages have accompanying poems by English poet and songwriter Frederic Weatherly. A charming, and scarce, item with 8 chromolithographic color transformations, all in Very Good working order.
CONDITION: Good-. Notoriously prone to wear, the covers are fair at best, with moderate soiling and severely cracked hinges that are nearly detached from the text block; numerous edge tears in the end papers which are also toned. Lightly rubbed along edges, clo th on front edge of spine somewhat frayed.This copy contains an i nked gift inscription on the front end paper from bookseller Jake Zeitlin to Helen Dahlstrom (wife of Grant Dahlstrom, Castle Pres s) and has Zeitlin's shop seal affixed inside back cover. .

The artist’s first book of theatrical and literary caricatures - f ollowing a two-year stint drawing for Vanity Fair and the New Yor ker. Dozens of caricatures of American and British celebrities f rom the 1920s. Four color plates, 6 b/w plates, the remaining car icatures in black and white line drawings. Introduction by Carl v an Vechten. Near fine in poor d/w. Corners lightly rubbed, light ly soiled at spine ends. The very scarce d/w is split in half wit h a 1.5” open tear at top of spine and numerous closed tears an d chips along edges. .

Illustrated in color on every page based in part be her drawings from the Almanacks. This copy differs from all other copies we have seen; the front cover is white, not red. Unknown if this is a variant edition or a later printing - in all other r espects it is the same as other copies we have seen. The back co ver is red and blue, as usual. Front cover soiled with loose thre ads at top and bottom edges. Back cover lightly soiled at top of spine edge with 1” fray on spine. Interior has some yellowing a nd light dam staingin but over all quite clean. .

All of the plates are present and in immaculate conditio n. .

Orange board s, white vellum spine with gilt lettering. Card slipcase. Fargue ’s homage to his long friendship with Daragnes -- published aft er both their death’s by the latter’s wife. Fargue died in 19 47; Daragnes in 1950. The text is previously unpublished and is illustrated with a suite of 28 color wood engravings by Daragnes illustrated the Montmarte area of Paris where his studio was loca ted. Sarah Chamberlain [The Chamberlain Press] published several collections of fables and fairy tales, illustrated with her engravings. E.g., "The Bremen Town Musicians", "A Grimm Fairytale", "Mother Goose", "A Frog Goes a'Courtin", "Pied Piper of Hamelin", Fables of Aesop. This small suite is a small selection from several. Chamberlain's publications were generally runs of 125-150 copies; this suite of 25 loose sheets is unusual. No copies online and we have found no bibliographic references to it.
CONDITION: Minor curl at left margin else fine.

The illustration opposite page 52 is signed in pencil, below the image. . in red and black, illustrations in red, sepia, and black. Condi tion: very good-near fine. A clean, tight copy that presents near ly fine. Covers: A small soil smudge about ½”x1” on both pan els near center of spine; otherwise fine with no bumping or rubbi ng. Internally: near fine -- some light toning and spotting to f ront matter pages occasionally very faint foxing; this appears to be a defect in the paper, not external damage [see photos] -- no t affecting any of the plates which were printed on different sto ck. We have handled several copies of this book and this is the n icest copy we have seen. The slipcase is in fair condition. No. 591 of 1050 copies, with a plate signed i n pencil by the artist. Title page printed in red and black, illu strations in red, sepia, and black. Condition: Fair; the text blo ck and illustrations are fine. The significant flaw is that it is lacking the backstrip on the spine, otherwise covers are good ov erall with several light stains.. The penciled signature on the plate on p.30 is present, but faint. Lacking original slipcase. .
