I think it was Mark Twain who said that Australian History sounded like the most fantastic lies. While a lot of it is true, there were some lies. Some of those lies are here, interspersed with some truth that might be even harder to believe. They all go up to create the history of Gold fever in Australia. Much gold has been found, and much dust and death as well. Some great reading in the stories in this book.This copy is in good condition - some creasing to covers, inscription on front endpapers, but good tight copy with minimal browning. Not a fan of Foucault. Wasn't at the time, and aren't now. Which is not in any way to denounce his influence. This book is a collection of essays on his influence in the field of history. A good, usable copy.

Just when you thought there couldn't be another book on Gallipoli, there is one. However, unlike some other recent publications, this one actually does fill a gap in the history. We never get told about the aircraft that flew and fought over the peninsula, so Hugh Dolan has decided to tell us. Written in a style that is a little too casual for my tastes, Dolan tells the story of the brave pilots that not only braved enemy weapons, but the failure of their own machinery. One thing I have learned from this book was that the first ever aerial torpedo attack on a ship occurred in this campaign.422 pages. B&W plates, maps, appendices, bibliography, index. What can one say about this book. Comprehensive and detailed, there is nothing missed in this encyclopaedic overview of German handguns. There is much of historic interest, including the fact that up until the time of publication, no German handgun had been produced in .45 calibre. A great book.319 pages. "Gilpin County, Colorado during the 1860's was called 'the richest square mile on earth'". This is the story of Peter McFarlane, who was many things to the town of Central City, who lived through the boom times and on into the decline of this once great gold field. This is a beaut copy.

The year book, but about 45 years too late. That's a good description of the contents of this tome. Sections showing what happened to the class of '49, what the College was like in that time, and analyses of where the class ended up. A history of the Gold Escorts that ran from Mt. Alexander (Castlemaine) to Adelaide, because the South Australians wanted a slice of the pie - offering higher gold prices than could be got in Victoria - sneaky! This book is a fine history of those escorts and a wonderful example of a Hawthorn Press book. Comes with slip from Kay Craddock, who must have had it on her shelves at some time (I'm selling it for less than she did...)This copy in great condition. Translation of an account of a 26 year-old Belgian who travelled to California in 1850 to hunt for gold. The book itself is a gold-mine of information about the California of the time as well as Portland Oregon, and the customs of local Indian tribes. The story of gold at the Ten Mile begins with the stories of gold discoveries at the big river and at Gaffney's creek. Gold was first discovered on the Goulburn in 1854 at Casheen's Point a little upstream from Jamieson. The history the Jamieson goldfield has 3 main threads : one - story of gold, of the reefs, miners, investors, the machinery and methods of mining, the second is the story of ten mile, the rise and fall of the Allen empire, and the third is of development of Jamieson the supply centre and the ultimate demise of the town.This is a good copy, but not perfect. Great history of the Yukon before the Klondike gold rush. Good illustrations, and good writing about what must have been tough times. Has a price sticker from the Anchorage Museum Shop, which seems incredibly exotic when I'm sitting here half a world away in another great gold rush city.This copy in good condition with some bumping and creasing. The Jordan Goldfield, in some of the most rugged country in Gippsland, contains such famous places as Walhalla, Woods Point, and Jamieson. This book is a treasure-trove of photographs of such places, and others that no longer exist...Red Jacket anyone?
