Descripción:
Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort (1st Printing, 1997). Stapled softcover, 23pp, illustrated wraps. Clean and unmarked, colors bright, binding intact.
About the pamphlet: The State of Kentucky played an important role in the life of Abraham Lincoln. To note that Kentucky was merely the birthplace of Lincoln overlooks the significant influence this state had on Lincoln's journey to the White House and path through the Civil War. Kentucky is fortunate to claim such a remarkable historical figure. Here we invite you to "meet Mr. Lincoln" and to discover the lasting effect that this state had on the life of Abraham Lincoln, and he upon us. From the foreward.
About the author: Dr. John E. Kleber, editor of The Kentucky Encyclopedia and The Encyclopedia of Louisville, provided the narrative for the booklet. He was assisted by Staff of the Legislative Research Commission, Kentucky Historical Society.

Lexington, Kentucky: Privately Printed (1st Edition, 1966). Seven-page staple-bound pamphlet with red covers. Like new condition. When "Miss Belle" Breezing died, Time magazine devoted practically all of its obituary column to the passing of the "famed Lexington, Kentucky proprietress of the most orderly of disorderly houses." In this pamphlet, William H. Townsend recounts the story of his visit to Madam Belle Breezing's house in the quest of some books, as well as to get a first-hand picture of the aging character whose house was long the scene of much gaiety and revelry. William H. Townsend was a renowned scholar, raconteur, and lawyer, born in Anderson Company. Educated first in a one room school at Glensboro, he graduated from University of Kentucky Law School in 1912. Among his books was Lincoln and the Bluegrass was published in 1955. His talk on Cassius Clay, "The Lion of White Hall", is now a taped classic. Townsend had the largest private collection of Lincolnania in the United States.… Leer más

Larkspur Press, Monterey, KY (1st Edition, 1999). #104 of 150 copies. Flat signed by both authors on title page. Hardcover with dust jacket. Dust jacket shows very little wear; minute closed tear at top of back cover. Book is clean and unmarked; the binding is tight. ABOUT THE BOOK: Aunt Betty's stories retold: The wise and colorful old Irishman James Roche held a running seminar in local history in his quarters in the Old Northern Bank Building at Lexington's Short and Market streets in the 1920s. At his instigation, Elizabeth "Aunt Betty" Hummons wrote a brief, reminiscent account of her observations in Lexington during the Civil War. She actually saw little of the military activities aside from seeing Gen. John Hunt Morgan and his men dash down Main Street after the so-called Battle of Ashland. She noted that Union forces had fired harmlessly on the town. At 77, "Aunt Betty" recorded her memories. There is the glow of age and some romance in her observations of local people and places. Though she… Leer más

ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR: Bettye Lee Mastin was a reporter on architecture in the Bluegrass. She spent her career informing Kentuckians about their remarkable heritage and built environment. Her writing helped lead to the preservation of many historic structures in the region. Born in Midway and raised in Jessamine County, she was a Phi Beta Kappa journalism graduate of the University of Kentucky. She began reading proof for the Lexington Herald in 1944 and joined the paper full-time in 1950. She wrote more than 2,000 weekly features about homes in Central Kentucky, blending a scholar's depth with a journalist's eye for an interesting story. Her work fueled the local preservation movement, and at Herald management's direction, she became an advocate for preservation and won awards for her work. Mastin also authored and co-authored many chapters, journal articles, and books about Kentucky history, including A… Leer más
