New York: Covici-Friede, 1933. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG+/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Herman Rosse. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. The original price of $2.00 is still present on the front flap. DJ shows a lot of chipping and scuffing, particularly on the spine area and rear cover. Front jacket is torn several inches at the bottom right and creasing his present. Green cloth boards underneath the clean with only minor spotting, rear board has a bump at the bottom center edge. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues at boards though there is some pulling at spots, like page 126/127. Pages are toned due to age and there is a bit of spotting and foxing scattered about, though nothing serious. A number of pages starting at 175 show small creases in the lower outside corners, where the pages were bumped. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting, no remainder marks.

Philadelphia, PA: Patterson & White Co., 1936. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. VG+/Good+. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. DJ shows edge bumping with small tears and chips, along with some surface soiling. The jacket did a good job protecting the book as the salmon colored boards are clean and bright with only issue being a small dent along the bottom front edge. Binding is tight and pages are clean, no owner's signatures or bookplates. Some minor foxing is present though, mainly to the end pages. Though the copyright and title pages shows the indication of a first edition (showing only the date of 1936) the third front end page has " second edition" in small letters at the top of the page. This same page has a brief inscription and signature from the author.

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1925. PhotoPlay Edition; First Printing . Hardcover. Good+. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, brown cloth boards shows some spotting along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The internal binding is good except for some pulling in spots and also the front hinge, which has a thin cracks starting on the upper half. The opposite end page contains a 1928 gift inscription as well as remnants of a price that was once penciled in the corner. Paper is toned due to age and there is spotting and foxing present on numerous pages, as well as the exterior page edges.

New York: Longmans, Green and Co., 1930. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, blue cloth boards show very minimal handling with only a few small spots in light corner wear. Spine is a bit sunned. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no remainder marks. The only evidence of handwriting is in the upper corner of the front end page where you can just barely see where an old price was once penciled and then later erased. Pages are toned but are clean. Stated first edition on the copyright page.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1936. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG-/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover with first eight dust jacket. Bottom front of DJ states the two actors names instead of later editions which state Pulitzer prize. DJ price clipped on front flap and exterior well worn and soiled. Book itself has some edge and corner bumps, pages toned, previous owner's name on front end page. Scribner first edition as indicated with " A" appearing on copyright page. See photos.

The exterior shows spotting and soiling with the worst being the rear board, spine is faded. Edges and corners also show bumps/wear. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. The front end page contains a 1918 Christmas gift inscription, no other handwriting found, no bookplates, no library markings etc. There is some light scattered spotting and foxing with the worst being the end pages. Title page states:" Illustrated with scenes from the play" and"Founded on Earl Derr Biggers' Played of the Same Name".

DJ shows scuffing along with some bumps, chips, small tears that are mainly along the top edge. There is also a small dent in the dust jacket near the spine and to the left of Ginger Rogers head. Red cloth boards underneath or clean with the only issue being some edge and corner wear. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight, the pages are darkened due to the poor quality of paper used because of the wartime regulation compliance. There are no bookplates, no library markings, no signatures. The only evidence of handwriting found is in the upper corner of the front end page where there is remnants of a price that was once penciled and then later erased.

New York: Random House, 1955. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. Original price of $4.75 is still present on the front flap. DJ is toned and spotted along with edge and corner chips and tears, edges at top and bottom of DJ spine area are frayed as well. Dark blue cloth boards underneath are clean though there is some fading along the edges, mainly on the front board copper and silver text and design is still clean and bright, corners mildly bumped. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting found. Copyright page states first printing.

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1918. Hardcover. VG+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, pattern green cloth boards show only minor spotting and handling wear, edges and corners show light wear and lower corners are bumped. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. There is one issue though, at the rear hinge where there is to smaller tears in the hinge area which are not from cracking but instead appear to be from a binding issue when the book was made. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings. The front end page shows indentations from where something was written along the top edge in pencil and then later erased. This was likely an old bookstore price that was removed. No other handwriting found in the book. An attractive copy.

Exterior shows spots on both boards and spine, which is the only reason the condition great is just VG. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. The front end page contains a previous owners bookplate, no other markings found in the book. No signatures, no handwriting, no library markings, no remainder marks.

Exterior shows minor spotting and soiling along with light edge and corner wear. The interior binding is good in text pages are tight. The interior appears like the book was never used. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting or underlining, no remainder marks.

Hardcover, maroon cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows only minor handling wear. The reason for the low condition grade is because it appears the first free end page is missing in the half title page is torn at the hinge area, though still securely attached. Signed by the author on the title page. There is a second signature located on the half title page as well. Not sure if this was the original owner or another autograph of someone of importance.

Gray paper boards with gilt on front and spine, edges and spine mildly sunned. No publication date (1928). Privately printed for members of the private social club called " The Players", located at 16 Gramercy Park in New York. The club was founded an 1888 by Edwin Booth " for the promotion of social intercourse between the representative members of the dramatic profession and the kindered professions of literature, painting, sculpture and music, and the patrons of the arts. The property is now a national historic landmark. This book, issued to members in the late 1920s, lists the board of officers and directors, certificates of incorporation, constitution and bylaws, house rules, and a list of active, honorary, and deceased numbers. Boston, MA: John W. Luce & Company, 1916. Hardcover. Good-. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardcover, paper covered boards in which the dust jacket is also the book exterior and is attached to the front and rear pastedowns. Title page shows 1911 publication date but copyright page states 1916. The attached but jacket shows chipping with the worst being on the spine edges and there is a large tear on the front. No handwriting or bookplates noted in book. Minor hinge pulling at page 17, which is where the play action begins. Book condition graded as good minus mainly due to the condition of the attached jacket. See photos.

The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1935. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Stated first edition. Extremely rare printing with page proceeding half-title which reads: " This copy of ROMANY is one of a Special First Edition Limited to 150 copies to be privately distributed and Not for sale.". Green cloth boards with design on front and spine, spine is sunned. No handwriting or bookplates noted, no torn or loose pages. Rear paste down a small green mark in lower left corner which may have been caused by a thread from the cloth board during the original binding process as the color matches the exterior of the book. Mark is only about an inch long but should be noted concerning the rarity of this book. Pages are toned. See photos.

Boston, MA: Walter H. Baker Company, 1930. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Green paper boards with black design and yellow pasted label. Binding square with no torn or loose pages. Front end page shows previous owner signature, Marshall E. Brenneman" and evidence wear a price was penciled and then erased. Exterior has some light soiling and the top edges spine appears to have been repaired at some point. There's a small piece of green paper inside the book as well. First edition thus. Interesting book on the early special effects of theater. See photos.

Hardcover, red cloth board shows some spotting and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The internal binding of the text portion of the pages is good and so is the front hinge, but the rear hinge has a long thin crack with the webbing peeking through. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings. The only evidence of handwriting is on the front end page where something was once penciled along the top edge, presumably from an old bookstore, and then later erased. Pages are toned due to age and there is some spotting and foxing present, though this is mainly limited to the end pages and pastedowns.

Hardcover with dust jacket that still has the original price of 8/6 on the front flap. DJ is in rough shape and in two pieces, with the spine barely hanging on and missing a chunk at the bottom. Cloth boards underneath are clean with only minor handling wear. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. There are no hinge issues, no signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting etc. The end pages in front and rear show toning due to reacting with the dust jacket over the many decades.

Hardcover, red cloth boards show spotting in the spine is mildly sunned, edges and corners lightly bumped. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, nothing torn or loose. The only evidence of handwriting found in the book is at the top of the front end page where you can just tell where an old bookstore price was once penciled and then later erased. Text pages are clean but the end pages show a few light smudge marks. The book grades as a high VG, borderline VG+.

Philadelphia, PA: The John C. Winston Company, 1932. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. The original price of $1.00 is still present on the front flap. DJ is toned and tattered, with numerous chips and tears. Spine shows fading. Tan cloth boards underneath are clean and the illustration on the front board is bright. There was only a few minor fade spots, mainly along the bottom front and spine. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting found. Pages are toned due to age and there is some minor light foxing scattered about, particularly around the pages showing photos from the movie. The dust jacket has a low condition grade, just below the good region, but the book itself nearly grades as fine. The only reason it was lowered to NF was because of the minor spotting in the lower section of the front board and spine.
