Examples of letters are included 'From a servant-man to his Sweetheart'; 'From a Gentleman to a widow'; 'From a Journeyman Tradesman to his Sweetheart'; 'From a Young Man to the Parents of a Young Lady'; 'From a Friend to another in Confinement for Debt'; and 'Letter from a Bashful Lover to his Mistress', most of which are then supplied with an example of a 'favourable' answer.Devonport, being a district of Plymouth, was made up of several dockyards in the mid nineteenth century, and as might be expected, a haven for sailors and tradesmen, for whom the present pocket guide would have been particularly useful. The Rev. Reginald Smith, had suspected tuberculosis around 1840 and the Smith's, after no improvement to his heath at Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, travelled on to Madeira, arriving there sometime in the middle of October 1841. Wyatt"); folded and unbound as issued, in very good state of preservation.A fascinating document which seems, however, not after all to have ended in a grant for a patent. George Harrison claims that "he is in possession of an invention communicated to him by an ingenious individual of a new method or methods of conveying information from one apartment of a house to another by means of an apparatus which he calls a "Domestic Telegraph" which invention he conceives will be of great public utility. That the same is entirely new and has never been practised or used in this country by any other person or persons to the best of his knowledge & belief". George Harrison not only does not disclose the name of the inventor, he also petitions for the patent to be in his own name. Dr Hanna with the Affectionate regards of J.N.P. Jany. 1862 "Confusions of a wasted youth"'.Known principally as an important min-Victorian painter, James Noël Paton (1821-1901) also turned his had to writing poetry in his youth. As he notes in his dedication he felt that his writings were 'Confusions of a wasted youth' and probably decided on anonymity in case of a negative reception. This copy was presented to the Scottish minister William Hanna (1808–1882) who was at one time editor of The North British Review and a productive author and contributor to journals. A similarly inscribed copy with a different quote is held at UCLA, this is presented to Mrs Henry Bicknell, a daughter of the painter David Roberts and one imagines that Paton sent copies to both friends and possible future patrons of his paintings. MANUSCRIPT IN INK. 4to, 29 leaves written on verso only, together with a number of blanks; bound in the original limp sheep.An unpublished enquiry into the origins of the Book of Proverbs.Percival, or Percy, Neale Harrison was born in 1874 in Hanley, Staffordshire, and was schooled in Newcastle and at Corpus Christi in Oxford where he graduated with honours. He then studied at Mansfield and also in Germany and at the age of 46 was awarded the degree Doctor of Divinity by the senate of London University. All that is known about his professional life is that he became a Reverend at Salisbury and Reading before settling in Beaconsfield. After the publication of The Problem of the Pastoral Epistles he wrote one other major monograph on the integrity of Polycarp's letter to the Philippians and a companion/supplementary volume to his original study of the Pastoral Epistles. Folio [36 x 24], 21 leaves of descriptive text each accompanied by an engraved circular plate; modern dark green half morocco over marbled boards.Originally appearing in the 1790's, in a periodical entitled The Temple of Taste, these engravings were collected together for publication in 1820 and again in 1825. Engraved by Taylor (a pupil of Bartolozzi), they are probably after originals by Thomas Girton. 'Charles Taylor, one of the two bookseller sons of the engraver Isaac Taylor, was apprenticed to his father and studied with Bartolozzi and therefore naturally gravitated towards the publication of illustrated works, e.g. Fenelon's Adventures of Telemachus (1792) with roundels engraved by himself, John Corbould and William Nutter. In November 1794 he launched a monthly magazine of which each Number was illustrated by two or three plates: one or two of allegorical or classical groups drawn by Samuel Shelley and stipple-engraved by Nutter in the Bartolozzi manner and one line-engraving of a London… Leer más

Rare first edition of this unusual work on Christian marriage by the prolific Udinese writer Francesco Beretta (1678-1768).Beretta discusses the aims of marriage, before examining its social effects and benefits, and describing the various types of marriage, as well as the different motives and requirements of those who enter into it. He goes on to examine the importance of wealth, beauty, and good health, before discussing the role of obedience in marriage, inward and outward modesty, clothing and ornament, conversation, dining, theatre ("dangerous to modesty"), love, piety, the good use of time, the period between betrothal and marriage, and the marriage ceremony itself. The author wrote on a number of subjects, including the history of Friuli, theological and biblical exegesis, and philosophy.

Oblong 8vo., album measuring 20 x 15 cm, comprising lithographed title page and trompe-d'oiel prefatory leaf (in the form of a letter to Rowland Stephenson), 11 lithographed title vignettes with two further titles to the views on the facing leaves penned in manuscript, 12 lithographed views (2 of which are coloured by hand) each set within a highly decorative blind embossed border by 'Dobbs Patent', London (14 signed as such); contemporary maroon straight-grained morocco, the panelled covers with a broad decorative gilt roll-tool border and corner-pieces, the upper the upper cover lettered 'Marshalls and the lower with a lyre, gilt edges, (a little rubbed at the extremities, 4 leaves detached from the sub mounts).A few years after this work was completed both the recipient Rowland Stephenson, who lived at Marshall, and the artist became bankrupts and fled to America. Folio Album, [28 x 38 cm], 12 leaves mounted on guards, each with a mounted photographs [22 x 29 cm] blind stamped 'Russell & Sons, Windsor'; original black half roan, upper cover lettered in gilt.Unique souvenir photo album recording an event held at the home of the British Indian Parsi shipping magnate, socialite and philanthropist, Dhunjibhoy Bomanji (1862-1937), when he gave £5,000 towards the building of a new Comrades of the Great War Club at Windsor. Allied to this gift was a lunch given by Bonamji and his wife for their guests Princess Alice, Earl Haig, Earl of Athlone etc. Also for the occasion there were invited the 'permanently disabled men' and the widows and orphans of the men killed in the Great War who lived in the Windsor district for which was arranged a tea combined with some philanthropy.There would have been many such fund raisers after the war but few officially recorded so lavishly, and fewer still recording an event involving British Asians. 4to, 10 ff; 52 monochrome illustrations of work by Mucha and 28 illustrations by other French Art Nouveau artists; in the original decorated wrappers.A very rare trade catalogue of mural panels and other graphic designs mainly by the famous Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) but also including a selection of works by other French artists such as Cossard and Sonrel. Many works offered here for sale have subsequently become icons of the French Art Nouveau movement. His lithographed panel sets of "Les Quatre Saisons", Les Fleurs, "Les Heures du Jour" and "Les Arts" seem, by today's standards, almost absurdly cheap at between 30 and 40 francs each whilst smaller posters, calendars and menu cards are even more modestly priced. This trade card or sheet was issued by James Pilton 'In the King's Road is a grand menagerie for foreign and English birds, the property of Mr. James Pilton; as also his manufactory of light fences for inclosing lawns, shrubberies, and ornamented walks; which is, very properly, called Invisible Fence: as at a comparatively small distance they vanish from the eye, and leave the prospect free and uninterrupted. A three sided folding card viewer, the sides covered with black paper, with a 90 mm diameter lens, cloth hinges repaired; and eight views (listed below), each 360 × 260mm; in a custom-made cloth box.A fine example of an early nineteenth century Vue d'Optique. The views included include: [1] Ruines d'un monastery, [2] Vue de Genève, [3] Vue de Benares, [4] Quai Ste. Lucie - Naples, [5] Grotte d'Antiparos - Grèce, [6] Scène dans la mer glaciale, [7] Vue de Venise, and [8] Temple d'Apollinnopolis - Egypte. The scene depicting the 'glaciale' is signed B. Couvert, unfortunately we have not been able to identify the artist.The Vues d'Optique is a viewing apparatus whose main components are a large, double convex lens. When the spectator looks at perspective views through the lens of the viewing machine, an illusion of recession is produced. Water-colour map with a central and large prospect of a windmill, 11½ × 7 inches (30 × 17 cm).A windmill at New Romney was recorded first in 1500 when it was described as 'falling to pieces'. Presumably its successor is shown north-east on the 1596 map. It is not unlikely that it had to be replaced 200 years later, by the structure depicted here in this water-colour map. This smock mill worked three pairs of stones and was at one time used by a miller named Ashby. In 1878 Stonham & Son were millers here. It was still working in 1894, when repairs were executed. (Finch).By 1933, when Finch conducted his survey, the mill was no longer extant. Mills became rare in the both Romney and Walland Marsh areas as the the land was converted from arable to pasture for sheep. Once well populated by the seventeenth century, the area became sparsely tenanted and with little land under cultivation for wheat, the main 'food' of windmills.The water-colour shows a typical Kent Smock Mill, not unlike that surviving… Leer más
