1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.

First edition, hardcover, 1879, Washington. Large heavy book has been professionally recased using original boards and spine, new endpapers. Paginates complete with all images and maps (13 European, 8 Inuit). Large folding map in rear pocket backed with linen, two panels with marbled paper over linen. Frontis portrait is heavy brittle stock and looks to have been reattached. Excellent interior with no ownership markings, no foxing, all images bright. Binding is sound. Boards show moderate patina, stains, etc but gilt remains bright. Old spine laid down over matching cloth looks rough but is not fragile. Arctic Biblio 6486. Contains some high quality images on plates and is packed with interesting images embedded in text.

Fine condition. Purchased new by me. Has mild general shelf wear consistent with age. No interior markings or condition issues of any type. A comprehensive listing of Native American resources and facts (like the acreage and population of each tribal reservation; radio programs; schools and much much more). A very nice copy of Sitgreaves Report. 1853. Senate Exec. Doc. 59. All 79 plates are present and the map is professionally reproduced in full size (27 x 47 inches) and placed in rear pocket. Howes S528; Wagner-Camp 230:1; Graff 3809. A note on collation: it is difficult. It helps to have reference materials and more than one copy. I have both and can guarantee this collates complete. Only condition issue is moderate to heavy foxing in places. That is a common problem with this volume. No prior ownership markings, stamps, or vandalism. In a beautiful modern quarter leather and marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. First edition, first printing, September, 1921. Original blue cloth hardcover, new endpapers. Buffalo Public Library imprint on title page, no other interior markings. Complete with both large fold out maps. Map of Malaya neatly repaired. Book is about Malaysia and Java at the very end of the colonial era. A nice copy with attractive plates & maps. First French edition, three volumes, 1787, Paris. Old full leather bindings with decorative gilt spines. Sparrman accompanied Cook on his second voyage as a naturalist and physician. This is an account of that trip and his observations of Africa which appears to have intrigued him more than than the Antarctic. Paginates: V.1: xxxii, map, 388, 3 plates; V.2: [2], 366, 5 plates; V.3: [2], 363, 8 plates. Vol. 1 has modern marbled blanks nearly matching the originals, other volumes with original marbled blanks. Complete with 16 plates, 1 large map. Overall condition is Very Good: hinges have been conserved, new blanks v.1, no interior writing or markings of any kind. One plate edge conserved with Japanese paper, small hinge tear on map conserved. Minimal foxing and staining. All paper edges marbled. Spine ends of volumes 1 & 2 somewhat diminished. 1821, London, first edition in English. Modern fine binding of half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. An underappreciated volume likely due to this first English translation. The modern translator, Seeber, describes this translation as the "product of a prosaic and incompetent literary hack" (please tell us how you really feel). It also omits about 40% of the original work leaving out daily interactions with Americans, Native Americans, and the most colorful events. Condition is Very Good: modern fine binding is excellent. Interior has scattered foxing and toning, no writing or old ownership marks. Marginal pencil mark on final page. Frontis edge conserved. Paginates: frontis, [2], 102, 5 plates, modern blanks. Six plates total. Other engravings in text. The Mammoth Skeleton plate is a modern copy. The frontis is a fairly spectacular aquatint of New York harbor. Copies with color plates are uncommon. Scarce 19th century reprint of Hakluyt's very rare 16th century work. 1889-1890 four volume set, published in Edinburgh by Edmund Goldsmid is complete with quarter leather spines and with original matching marbled boards. Volumes have two title pages and a half title. The first title page is dated 1891 and notes this set is a portion of a larger work "Hakluyt's Complete Collection of Voyages" published by Goldsmid in 1891. On inspection one can see that these are the 1889-1890 volumes with the 1891 promotional title page added later. This set began life at the Public Library of New London with the only evidence being the bookplate. Later this set arrived at Ambassador College Library of Pasadena, California with only evidence being stamps on the title pages and paper edges. No pockets ever. When I acquired this set the spines of volumes 1 & 2 were perished and were replaced with black leather with gilt titles. Original matching psychedelic cobalt marbled boards remain.
