France. Good with no dust jacket. 1785. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent French medical report that dates from pre-revolutionary France. The document is a Doctor’s record about a particular patient. The name Coulavoz is noted in two places, suggesting that this is the name of the patient. Context suggests that the patient is a woman. Je suis appele au mois d'avril dernier par elle. Dont je dirige la sante depuis quelque annees. Ce est sujet a une tour habituelle qui lui fait rejetter une pituite assez abondante... [Translation: I was called last April by her. I have been managing her health care for a few years now. It is subject to a habitual pattern that has her rejecting a rather large pituitary gland...]. The notes then go on to describe in great detail physical conditions and symptoms in the patient. For a historian, especially one looking at the extent of medical diagnostic skill and treatments in the later 18th century France, this doctor’s medical notes are a… Leer más

France. Good with no dust jacket. 1786. Ephemera. On offer is is an excellent example of the types of decrees that were issued by Louis XVI’s Council of State in the late 18th century, immediately prior to the French Revolution. The document is dated December 13th, 1786, only 2ó years before the French Revolution. Up until that time, the Conseil d’Etat du Roi or King’s Council of State originated in the 13th century. It was the principal administrative body charged with the ruling of the country. It had 3 sections dealing with administration, finance and the overseeing of judgments. It was reorganized under Louis XIV, consolidating several ‘sub-councils’. From that time until the fall of the monarchy, it remained unchanged. The council ceased to operate with the overthrow of the monarchy. In 1799, the Council of State was re-established by the new government – The French Consulate, at the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte. It continues to this day as the… Leer más

France. Good with no dust jacket. 1789. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent example of the type of legal discourse relating to commercial transactions in 18th century France. The letter was written by a lawyer named Belize, in Paris 1789, only a few months before the beginnings of the French Revolution. The recipient is not named. However, on the reverse, there is a list of names of those who apparently had an interest in this case and the recipient most likely was one of those persons. An excerpt of the document follows: Comme vous me aparutir fort effecte sur le compte du mal entendu d'affaire que subsiste entre M. Descripción:
France. Good with no dust jacket. 1792. Ephemera. On offer is fascinating document from the early days of the French Revolution with a mysterious connection to Benjamin Franklin, one of the great Founders of the United States. The document relates to the forfeiture of an estate and its subsequent auction. It describes the steps taken by the local Directoire du District (District Executive Council) of the Department of Cher in central France to auction off a particular property. The President of the District Council at the time was Pierre-Antoine-Jean Remond. He had an interesting connection with Benjamin Franklin, which is described below. Following the French Revolution of 1789, there was a mass emigration of French nobles and members of the wealthy upper classes to neighbouring countries as wholesale bloodshed and terror spread across the country. However, by 1792, this emigration swelled to a tidal wave of thousands fleeing for their lives. In November, 1791, the French government… Leer más

France. Good with no dust jacket. 1792. Ephemera. On offer is damaged document that connects directly with the Napoleonic Wars and France’s naval forces. This torn piece goes right through all four pages. The document is a legal decree regarding officers in the French Navy. It addressed the payments of allowances owed to them. The decree is numbered 1282 and was issued on May 1st, 1792 and notes that this was the 4th year of Liberty. At that time, Louis XVI was still King but the country was sliding inexorably into chaos. It was now ruled by a National Assembly and only a few months later, in January 1793, Louis would be executed by the mob. The French Navy suffered during the French Revolution. As a result of crushing national debts leading up to the Revolution, the Navy was already in a weakened state. The arrival of a revolutionary government did not help. There was a general suspicion of the mostly aristocratic officer corps and many were either summarily dismissed from service… Leer más

France. Good with no dust jacket. 1792. Ephemera. On offer is a superb copy of the laws relating to the French national debt and the seizure of property of those French nobles who fled France to escape the guillotine. At the outset of the French Revolution, Frances national finances were in total disarray. The country had virtually bankrupted itself in the Seven Years War with Britain and with its participation in the American Revolution. Moreover, the French Royalty and nobility were a study in corruption and excess. Taxation only applied to the peasants. Making matters worse, levying taxes at a local level was controlled, not by the French government but by local boards who were very reluctant to impose more taxes on their already deeply-burdened local communities. It had to boil over at some point and that point came in 1789 with a full national revolution. The new republic still had the same financial mess on its hands. This document describes part of the efforts to deal with that… Leer más

Good with no dust jacket. 1793. Ephemera. On offer is a superb document issued two days following the creation of the notorious Committee of Public Safety which deliberately created the Reign of Terror following the French Revolution. The Decree was published on April 8th, 1793, two days following the creation of the infamous Committee of Public Safety. It deals with the seizure of property, specifically mills and factories, that were owned by emigres, those French aristocrats who had fled France following the Revolution. This emigration created several problems for the Revolutionary government. There now existed outside of France and within the borders of her enemies, a very motivated group who were dedicated to the overthrow of the Revolution. Also, among other assets, the mills and factories that they owned were now idle, contributing to lost food production and jobs. The National Convention ordered that all emigres return to France. Failure to do so would result in being permanently… Leer más

This date corresponds to the beginning of the Reign of Terror – that period in the Revolution when a series of massacres swept across France and when the spectacle of endless public executions became a constant presence in virtually every city and town. This bulletin contains a summary of changes made to five different laws or regulations. France. Good with no dust jacket. 1793. Ephemera. On offer is a fascinating appeal from a German doctor living in revolutionary France to the Committee of General Security. The letter was written “ Year 2” of the new French Republic – 1793 by the Gregorian calendar. The letter appears to be a reference for another person, a Doctor Suiffert who is identified simply as ‘Saxon’. The writer’s name is not legible. The letter is addressed to the Committee of General Security. The Committee of General Security was a French parliamentary committee which acted as police agency during the French Revolution that, along with the Committee of Public Safety, oversaw the Reign of Terror. Designed to protect the Revolutionary Republic from its internal enemies. It supervised the local police committees in charge of investigating reports of treason, and was one of the agencies with authority to refer suspects to the Revolutionary Tribunal for trial and possible execution by… Leer más

France. Good with no dust jacket. 1798. Ephemera. On offer is an interesting letter written to the French Minister of War during the French Revolution. The letter was written in March, 1798, using the new Revolutionary calendar dating style. It was addressed to the Minister of War who was, at the time, Barthélemy Schérer. Schérer had a long military career. Born in France, he first served in the Austrian army before returning home to join the French army. Five years later he left again, this time to join the Dutch Army. Several years later, he returned to France and reentered the French army. This time he stayed and built a career, rising to General and eventually commanding the Army of Italy. He was replaced by none other than Napoleon Bonaparte. His army instructions, drafted over the winter of 1795-1796, formed the basis of Bonaparte's system in 1796. France. Good with no dust jacket. 1800. Ephemera. On offer is an extract from the Bulletin Des Lois (Legislative Bulletin) dated 12 Floreal An IX in the republican calendar for May 1st, 1800.This document is an extract, possible from a large ledger. The document is titled Regie De L’Enregistrement Et Du Domaine National – National Registry and subtitled Fixation et Distribution de la Remise Generale de l'an IX - Determination and Distribution of the Year IX General Rebate.
