Richmond, Virginia: Offprint, originally published in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 1935. First separate printing, this copy with the author's presentation slip pasted to the verso of the front cover. Octavo (9" x 6"), 36 pages. Original printed, stapled stiff paper wraps.
Covers lightly sunned & soiled, otherwise Fine.
The author was the first state archivist in Virginia. He "worked to make the state's records more accessible and to ensure that local records were stored in fireproof buildings." (~Encyclopedia Virginia).
"The accompanying chart is a graphic presentation of how the Henrico "line" drifted along from county to county (e.g. King William), or along with them (e.g. St. Anne's), as population increased from decade to decade and pushed back the frontier ..." ~Excerpted from the first page.

Octavo (9.5" x 6.25"), xvii & 601 pages plus 30 unnumbered pages of plates including a two page color illustration after a painting by Charles Hoffbauer. Publisher's full brown leather, the spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, elaborately lettered & decorated in gilt. All edges gilt, satin ribbon marker sewn in, moire fabric endpapers. Publisher's notes laid in.
Unobtrusive soft crease affecting recto & verso of the illustrated leaf preceding the title page, otherwise a fine & apparently unread copy.

Lacking the map. Partially split at the upper joint, shallow losses at spine extremities, foxed and soiled, good or so. Pseudonym of Philip Nicklin.

[Alexandria, Virginia]: not published, 1878 -1879. Marbled paper over card stock measuring 8 inches by 6.5 inches with the partial printed label of Episcopal High School on the front cover containing 92 pages recorded in ink on ruled paper. With small booksellers' label of J. & W.J. Entwisle of Alexandria at the verso of the front cover.
Very worn: Covers half perished (affecting printed label), soiled, foxed, edge wear, still quite useful.
William Edward Craighill (1863 - 1916) was the son of Union General William Price Craighill who himself rose to the rank of general. Young Craighill was a student at Episcopal High School which was the first high school in Virginia.

Mostly relative to horses, the catalog describes & illustrates the company's line of bits, whips, saddles, harnesses, collars, bridles, & more. Additionally includes 3 pages of dog collars & muzzles.

Includes memoirs of various departed reverends & interesting illustrated advertisements following text.

Charles Washington was the youngest brother of General George Washington & the founder of Charlestown. After changing hands several times, the Mordington property, now called Happy Retreat, was inherited in 1920 by Virginia Lewis Mitchell who here offers for sale the mansion & substantial land, in full or in part.

No place, no publisher, no date (ca. 1872). 8vo, 21, [1] pp. Stapled, printed, stiff paper wraps. Not found in OCLC as of 2/18/2022.Lightly soiled, soft vertical crease throughout, brief foxing, otherwise very good.Apparently an unrecorded offprint from a 10 part series originally published in Harper's Monthly beginning in 1872. Strother, an illustrator, journalist, & Confederate brevet brigadier general, is sometimes credited with introducing the new State of West Virginia to the rest of the country. Although fictionalized, his account is based on actual events. "On a pleasant day in June we started from the Berkeley Springs on a pleasure excursion to the Allegheny Mountains. Our equipage was an old-fashioned Troy coach, drawn by four horses, and painted red. The coachman was a native mountaineer, whose eccentricities would furnish material for a readable chapter ..." ~Excerpted from page 1.

"Old Dominion Academy was moved to Berkeley Springs in 1914 and located on on Market Street. Just downhill was one of two houses used for out of town students. The military academy lasted about a decade. It later served as a public junior high called The Annex."

Narrow octavo (9" x 3.75"), 8 pages, illustrated, in original textured green card covers lettered & decorated in gilt. Additionally included is a promotional brochure for the club (dated 1924 in ink) comprising a single sheet measuring 7" x 6.25" folded once to form 4 pages. Worn: newly stapled (replacing rusted staples), rear cover torn horizontally (now repaired with archival tissue), staining from a previous repair, gilt dull, foxed & soiled, previous owner's name in pencil at page one, otherwise Good. The brochure is foxed & the same previous owner's name is in pencil on the front cover. "The club house will be constructed of stone and will be of colonial design ... It will be commodious and modern with every facility and up-to-date appointments ... A splendid 18-hole golf course as well as a 9-hole course will be provided ... Signed in ink by George Hite on November 5, 1814 on the recto & by Edward McGuire & Joseph Gamble on November 8, 1814 on the verso. Old folds, moderate edge wear, some staining, otherwise Very Good. Author Pendleton (1847 - 1941) served in the 8th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War & was later the owner & editor of the Tazewell Republican.

The event featured an address by Dr. J.H. Hawkins, National Lecturer Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and, of course, a rendition by attendees of The Bright Fiery Cross sung to the tune of The Old Ruggeg Cross. Additional entertainment, including The Star Spangled Banner, was provided by "Orchestra." The bottom portion provides a form to be returned by those seeking further information.
"So I'll cherish the Bright Fiery Cross/ Till from my duties at last I lay down/ Then burn me for a Bright Fiery Cross/ The day I am laid in the ground."

[Front Royal, Virginia: S.S. Little], 1894. Original small broadsheet handbill printed recto & verso on paper measuring approximately 5.5 inches by 3 inches, with an illustration of an eyeball on the recto.
Upper margin soiled & foxed, slight edge wear, otherwise Very Good.
On the verso, S.S. Little "Specialist on the Eye," of Cumberland, Maryland, advises in part:
"No Charge is made to determine if your eyesight may be improved or headache relieved by wearing properly adjusted glasses. Bear in mind the date, and do not fail to consult me if your eyes trouble you ..."
Quite uncommon, this broadsheet is not located via OCLC Worldcat as of 12/9/2021.

Offprint originally published in "Through the West Gate of Mount Vernon," a publication of the Historical Society of Fairfax County, Virginia 8vo, unpaginated [8 pp], with a photographic illustration. Original printed paper wraps, this copy signed by the author, with presentation to the Colonial Dames, dated 10 October, 1977 on the upper cover.
Modest edge wear, wraps foxed & soiled, otherwise very good.
Presents the author's essay on Rippon Lodge, the oldest remaining house in Prince William County, Virginia, which was built in 1725 by an ancestor & purchased by Black in 1952. Admiral Richard Blackburn Black accompanied Richard E. Byrd's second antarctic expedition in 1933 for which he was awarded a Special Silver Medal by Congress. During World War II he served in the Tarawa and Saipan campaigns and subsequently received a Bronze Star.

The celebration featured a morning session only for families and friends offering bicycle races, boxing, wrestling, singing, and, of course, music by the Klan Band. An evening session followed which was open to the general public & featured an address on "The Principles of Our Great Order," a parade, entertainment by the K.K.K. Quartette accompanied by the Klan Orchestra, initiation of new members, & fireworks.
