Descripción:
Octavo, manuscript corrections (as usual) in Mann's hand in chapter XLII, very good in bright original khaki cloth lettered in black.First edition. Self-published (but distributed by Robertson & Mullens at 7/6), Mann had 1000 copies printed by Periodicals Pty Ltd in Melbourne, and was hopeful that Angus & Robertson would publish a trade edition after the novel won the 1932 Australian Literature Society Gold Medal but it was still rejected. A.&R. eventually published a paperback edition in 1973.In all copies examined, Mann, in ink manuscript (on pages 319-21), has altered all references to 'Bill Potter' (wounded in a trench in chapter XL and sent to England to convalesce) to 'Bill Batten' when the character appears unscathed in chapter XLL. Very scarce.
