Octavo, manuscript corrections (as usual) in Mann's hand in chapter XLII, very good in bright original khaki cloth lettered in black.
First edition. Self-published (but distributed by Robertson & Mullens at 7/6), Mann had 1000 copies printed by Periodicals Pty Ltd in Melbourne, and was hopeful that Angus & Robertson would publish a trade edition after the novel won the 1932 Australian Literature Society Gold Medal but it was still rejected. A.&R. eventually published a paperback edition in 1973.In all copies examined, Mann, in ink manuscript (on pages 319-21), has altered all references to 'Bill Potter' (wounded in a trench in chapter XL and sent to England to convalesce) to 'Bill Batten' when the character appears unscathed in chapter XLL. Very scarce.

Demy octavo, original oatmeal cloth with crisp colour silk-screen printed dustwrapper, John Gawsworth's copy with his 'Realm of Redonda' bookplate.
First edition. An excellent association copy of Porter's first volume of poetry, inscribed by Porter in the Surrey Hotel (London) for the poet John Gawsworth. Porter writes about drinking at the Surrey and Gawsworth in his third volume of autobiography The Extra (1975). For 'a fiver' Gawsworth 'honoured' Porter as the 'Duke of Gippslandia'.

Octavo, contemporary name and date on front free endpaper, some spotting to early leaves but very good in original black cloth lettered in gilt (slight wear at head & foot of spine), publisher's orange top stain.

Quarto, processed typescript, 12 leaves (printed on rectos only), original patterned apricot wrappers (unevenly faded) lettered & illustrated in gilt, clipped newspaper obituary of Deamer pasted to verso of front wrapper.One of a series of four one-act 'morality' plays by Deamer, the Sydney literary & bohemian figure of the 1920s & 30s. All four were performed on one night in July 1933 at the Tom Thumb Theatre, Sydney, requiring 'a certain amount of fortitude' from the audience, according to a reviewer.Rare.

He also wrote as 'Aintree', 'Texas Ranger', and 'Gerald Grantham', mostly publishing his novels under his own imprints Crime Book Publishing Co. and Popular Publications.

Octavo, bright original burgundy cloth lettered in yellow with chipped Norman Lindsay pictorial dustwrapper.
Well and truly out of print, this edition was the 'first of the Endeavour Press Australian Classic Reprints', selling about 800 copies in the first six months. Rejected by the a number of publishers, Jonah, Stone's Sydney larrikin novel, was first published by Methuen in 1911, but distributed by Angus & Robertson in Australia.

A critical & popular success, the novel ran to three impressions in the second half of 1934. Modelled on Henry Handel Richardson's Fortunes of Richard Mahony trilogy, Landtakers was folowed by Inheritors in 1936, but the third volume remains unpublished.
Brian Penton was a Sydney journalist, mostly on the Daily Telegraph, but also dabbled in publishing.

A forgotten novel of the 1930s, but the subject of two interesting and engaging Sydney literary libel cases. Both author & publisher separately and successfully sued the Bulletin after it published a negative review by the author and journalist Brian Penton criticising both Mezzomorto and Crockett, implying that the novel was obscene. Referring to the dustwrapper, the KC representing the Bulletin in the first case concluded his address to the jury: 'You can't cover filth over with a gay overcoat.' Scarce with dustwrapper.

An extensive review in the Truth (Sydney) concluded: '"Miracles by Arrangement" should be treated by the censor in the same way as "Redheap." It must be banned. Better still if it could be banned overseas, where it cannot but help give the outside world a wrong impression—a perverted impression—of Australia and Australians.'
