Descripción:
Benjamin Franklin, who was a Fellow of the Royal Society, apparently sent the paper, Cogitata de Cometis. Communicated by Benjamin Franklin, LL. D. F. R. S. , to the Royal Society for their consideration. The paper, which was read before the Society on March 19, 1767, was written in Latin by Johannes (John) Winthrop. The paper's title, translated to English, is I thought about Comets. The theme of the paper, again translated from the opening sentences, is "Since it is clear from the most famous discoveries of Newton, 'gravity occurs in all bodies, and that it is proportional to the quantity of matter in each, and reciprocally proportional to the square of the distance between the centers of the bodies, it follows from this that between any two bodies of any system of the world there can exist a limit of attraction, in which of course the position the particle will be forced in both directions with equal forces.' This paper, read before the Royal Society on March 12, 1767, dealt with a proposed solution to the electrical shock problem. A "Description of an improved Apparatus for performing Electrical Experiments, in which the Electrical Power is increased, the Operator intirely secured from receiving any accidental Shocks, and the whole rendered more convenient for Experiments than heretofore: By C. L'Epinasse, F. R. S." describes the apparatus and how it should be used.

Descripción:
A contagious distemper, raging through cattle, was noted to be similar to smallpox in its means of spreading. This led to the consideration of whether inoculation of the cattle was able to limit the spread of the disease to prevent the repeated reinfection of cattle who had survived an initial infection. The paper A Discourse on the Usefulness of Inoculation of the horned Cattle to prevent the contagious Distemper among them. In a letter to the Right Hon. George Earl of Macclesfield, P.R.S from Daniel Peter Layard, M.D. F.R.S. presents the results of work that was done to meet the challenge of "That before inoculation could be practiced on the horned Cattle, it was necessary to bring proofs, that this disease is not susceptible more than once; and also assurances, that a recovery from the distemper by inoculation guards the beast from a second infection".
The paper was presented to the Royal Society on February 2, 1758 and published in 1758 in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol.… Leer más

Safety is a common denominator in all laboratory work, and this scientific paper clearly states the problem to be solved in the first paragraph. The author states "In the common matter of distillation there escapes a great quantity of fumes, which cannot be condensed; and in several operations these fumes are very hurtful to the lungs. By the following method of distillation these fumes are totally condensed, which makes a great saving in some distillations, and the operator is in no danger of being hurt by any pernicious vapours. The paper is titled"Experiments on the Distillation of Acids, volatile Alkalies, &c. showing how they may be condensed without Loss, and how thereby we may avoid disagreeable and noxious Fumes: In a Letter from Mr. Peter Woulfe, F. R. S. to John Ellis, Esq, F. R. S.".

This 4-page undated paper, "Extracts from the American Slave Code" (Second Edition of 10,000), was published in about 1855 by The Anti-Slavery Bugle of Salem, Ohio. The Anti-Slavery Bugle was an abolitionist newspaper published in Ohio from June 20, 1845, to May 4, 1861. The paper's motto was "No Union with Slaveholders". In this issue of the paper, the editors provide abridged selections from the statutes of the slave states of the United States, while noting that "They give but a faint view of the cruel oppression to which the slaves are subject, but a strong one enough, it is thought, to fill every honest heart with a deep abhorrence of the atrocious system".
The paper, which measures approximately 5 ½ inches wide by 8 ¾ inches tall, is without covers and has slightly tanned pages. The text, although small, is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the item is very good.

Descripción:
The battle over whether the U.S. Currency should be based on gold or silver had been going on for years, and in 1896, a presidential election year, it appeared to be a significant issue between the parties. Speeches, pamphlets, articles and arguments abounded, and the pamphlet Fact Against Fiction - Prices of Farm Products For Thirty Years. False in One – False in All approached the dispute from the viewpoint of the farmer. The conclusion of this approach, described on the last page of the pamphlet, is boiled down to a few sentences on the front cover, reading "Any honest examination of the records of farm prices will show that the value of gold as measured by the farmers' crops is not advancing. The silver owners bid for the farmers' vote, based on this claim, is directly contrary to the truth."
The pamphlet, which measures approximately 5.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall, is staple-bound and contains 16 pages. It was printed by Allied Printing of Chicago. The pages are tanned, but the text is… Leer más

To spread information to the medical community in the 18th century, doctors would often write up their experiences with strange, or unexpected medical cases and submit the papers to the Royal Society of London for publication in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. This paper, "A Further Account of the Effects of Electricity in the Cure of some Diseases: In a Letter from Mr. Patrick Brydone to Dr. Robert Whytt, Professor of Medicine in the University of Edinburgh, and F.R.S.", was read before the Royal Society of London on May 11, 1758. It was one of a series dealing with the potential benefits of the newly found "electricity" to the lives and activities of mankind. In this paper, the way electric shock was used to cure some ailments is described, as well as including attestments by the two people so treated as to the success of the "cure".
The paper was published in 1758 in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol. L, Part II For the Year 1758, pages 695 to 699. This… Leer más

The 1866 edition copy of "The Great Metropolis - Phelps' New York City Guide. To all that can be seen and how to see it. With Street Directory" is a 70 page booklet that measures approximately 3 ¾ x 6 inches. It was written to be as all-encompassing as possible, and to meet the needs of both foreign and domestic visitors. The text is supplemented with 13 full-pages and 2 half-page illustrations. The Guide was published by Humphrey Phelps in New York.
To provide a sense of the scope and detail of the booklet, a number of copies of pages accompany this description. They show:• a 2-page spread of the title page and a bird's eye view of New York• U. S. Treasury Building, Wall Street• Trinity Church• The City Prison, called The Tombs• The Cooper Institute
The condition of the string-bound booklet is compromised by its missing hard covers (although a bit of the spine remains) and the absence of its fold-out map of the city. Other than that, all items indicated in the Contents and Illustrations… Leer más

Descripción:
The financial issues related to bimetallism (gold vs silver base for currency) and paper money ("greenbacks" vs currency based on gold or silver) were actively discussed in the late 19th century. Sound Currency, a semi-monthly publication of the Sound Currency Committee of the Reform Club, was a vehicle for many articles on these issues. "Greenbacks and the Cost of the Civil War", by Wesley C. Mitchell was the featured article in Vol. IV, No. 8 (April 15, 1897) of the publication. The article was "Reprinted, by permission, from the 'Journal of Political Economy', University of Chicago, March, 1897".
The booklet, which measures approximately 6 x 8 ¾ inches, contains 16 pages of text and data printed on a semi-gloss paper. There are no covers. There is an approximatelly 1 ¼ inch tear on the outer edge of the first page. The pages are lightly tanned, but the printing is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the booklet is very good.
