Descripción:
This copy of the Speech of James Dixon, of Connecticut, Delivered in the Senate of the United States, February 9, 1858 contributes to our understanding the legislative battles between the North and South in regard to the expansion of slavery to the Territories and, particularly, the attempts of Kansas to be accepted as a State in the Union while insisting on the legality of slavery in the State.
The paper, which measures approximately 5 ¾ x 9 inches, contains fifteen 2-column pages of text describing the lead-up to the speech (1 page) and the complete text of the speech (pages 2-15). The paper was printed by Buell & Blanchard, Printers in Washington, D.C. The pages of the speech are slightly tanned, with text that is clear and easily read. The paper has no cover and has a small tear on the upper edge of the pages near the spine, and several pages detached. The overall condition of the paper is good.
The illustrations accompanying this description show the first page and a typical 2-page spread of the… Leer más

The Civil War was over, and Congress was considering the submission of a proposed Amendment to the Constitution to the States for ratification. The amendment read
Mr. Davis was opposed to this amendment as written, and in the Speech of Hon. Thomas T. Davis, of New York, on Equality of Rights; delivered in the House of Representatives, February 28, 1866 he presented his reasons. He states early in his speech that "...I am unwilling, after this Constitution has been tested in peace, and in foreign war, for nearly eighty years, and when, during the last four years, it has been to us as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, pointing out a safe pathway to the nation through the Red Sea of civil war, and has led us to final triumph, and while the passions excited by the civil strife remain active and unsubdued, and wounds received are still open and bleeding, to amend or alter the organic law of the nation in any particular where a supreme necessity does not demand it...".

Descripción:
The question of the admittance of Kansas to the Union was at the center of the slavery/anti-slavery disputes of the 1850s. This First Edition copy of the Speech of Hon. James H. Hammond, of South Carolina, on the Admission of Kansas, under the Lecompton Constitution. Delivered in the Senate of the United States, March 4, 1858 presented the Southern argument for the admission of Kansas, regardless of the claims by the North that the approval of the Lecompton constitution was the result of vast election fraud.
The Lecompton Constitution was the second of four proposed constitutions for the state of Kansas (it was preceded by the Topeka Constitution and was followed by the Leavenworth and Wyandotte Constitutions, the Wyandotte ultimately becoming the Kansas state constitution). The Lecompton Constitution enshrined slavery in the proposed state and protected the rights of slaveholders. In addition, the constitution provided for a referendum that allowed voters the choice of allowing more slaves to enter… Leer más

Descripción:
The entry of Kansas into the Union was controversial, particularly relating to the issues of slavery. In this instance the question before the House was whether the Legislative Body of the Territory of Kansas had been properly established and had the authority to select a Delegate to the House for the purpose of participating in the discussions relating to the admission of Kansas into the Union. The Speech of Hon. John Sherman, of Ohio, In reply to Mr. Stephens, of Georgia, and Review of Mr. Oliver's Minority Report, Before the House of Representatives, July 30, 1856 (concerning the seating of a delegate from the Territory of Kansas) was part of the arguments related to the delegate question.
Mr. Sherman's opening remarks say that "...The controversy now before the House turns upon the question whether or not the two bodies recently assembled at Shawnee Mission was a valid Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Kansas, elected in accordance with its organic law. If so, then Gen. Whitfield is… Leer más

Descripción:
The struggle for Kansas to gain admission to the Union went on for a number of years. The attempt, under the Topeka Constitution of 1855, which called for Kansas to be a non-slave state, failed. In 1857 another attempt at statehood was made under the Lecompton Constitution. The Lecompton Constitution was the second of four proposed constitutions for the state of Kansas (it was preceded by the Topeka Constitution and was followed by the Leavenworth and Wyandotte Constitutions, the Wyandotte becoming the Kansas state constitution) This document was written in response to the anti-slavery position of the 1855 Topeka Constitution of the free-state advocates. The territorial legislature, consisting mostly of slave-owners, met at the designated capital of Lecompton in September 1857 to produce a rival document. This new constitution enshrined slavery in the proposed state and protected the rights of slaveholders. In addition, the constitution provided for a referendum that allowed voters the choice of… Leer más

Descripción:
The issue of slavery in the United States grew substantially during the 1850's until it tore the nation apart with the Civil War in 1861. The public, both in the North and South, were confronted with speeches, protests, demonstrations and other actions from both sides of the issue. "The Crisis of Freedom" -- A Sermon preached at the Free Church, in Lynn, on Sunday, June 11, 1854., by Samuel Johnson was one of the anti-slavery sermons of the mid-1850's. In this sermon, Johnson speaks out against slavery and, in particular, the Fugitive Slave Act.
The sermon is contained in a 21 page booklet, in paper covers, that measures approximately 5 ½ x 9 inches. It was published, "By Request of the Society", by Crosby, Nichols & Co. in Boston in 1854 and printed by Stacy and Richardson of Boston. The booklet, which is ex-libris, has pages that are tanned, with some chipping along the edges and occasional staining, but with the text clear and easily read. The overall condition of the booklet is good.

Descripción:
The Congregational Association of New York established a committee to investigate and report on "The relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery". The report of that committee was made in 1855. The conclusions drawn are not clear, for it had been the policy of the Society to not take any position on slavery, since they believed it was not a proper religious issue. In any event, one member of The Congressional Association wrote "The Tables Turned" -- A Letter to the Congregational Association of New York, reviewing the Report of their committee on "The Relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery", By a Congregationalist Director taking issue with the procedures, actions, conclusions and writings of the Committee.
This letter writer did not wish to identify himself other than by the nom-de-plume of A Congregationalist Director. He expressed his dissatisfaction, however, with words such as "...The facts are these: the chairman of your committee, whose name alone… Leer más

Descripción:
The question of slave vs. non-slave state was on the agenda, with arguments being made that Congress did not have any right to enter this fray, since the Constitution did not give them the power to legislate the living condition of the state's inhabitants. The Union of the Democracy - Resolutions of '98 -- Speech of Hon. N S Townshend, of Ohio, delivered to the House of Representatives, March 17, 1852 was intended to contribute to these discussions by introducing material from two "Resolutions of '98" that were relative to the slavery/anti-slavery confrontations of the 1850s. These resolutions, which are contained in their entirety in this paper, are "Kentucky Resolutions of 1798" (Original draft prepared by Thomas Jefferson) and "The Virginia Resolutions of 1798" (Drawn up by James Madison). Mr. Townshend starts his speech with "I desire to avail myself of the latitude of debate usually tolerated in this committee, to present what I conceive to be the true method to secure the pacification of the… Leer más

Mr. Wade speaks to this issue in this speech.
The speech is contained in an eight page double-columned booklet whose pages are unopened. The booklet is approximately 6 x 9 ½ inches.
