Amsterdam: Chez Henri Du Sauzet, 1725. 12mo. [16], 348 pages [31]pp index, (1)pp, 2 folding plates, (map and large folding etching). French text, title printed in red and black. A remarkable account of life in Algiers both in terms of its history and culture. The background deals with Algers and its conflict with Spain. De Tassy compared the Case del Hospital de Espana, as the residence was known, to the consulates that other European states maintained in Algiers. He points out in detail the condition of slaves (who when highly cultured or educated ended up in the royal palace). While the term in Arabic Ber, merely meant a desert, the term was converted to barbarian by Europeans. Their care of captives in their hospitals was often much better than that of those in European capitols. One of the most objective accounts of Algiers by contemporaries. bound in full calf, spine gilt but mostly worn off, marbled endpapers, all edges red, some chipping to head. A very good copy.

Boston: Fields, Osgood and Company, 1871. First Edition. Small Octavo. Frontispiece, vignette title page, 106 pages. His poems were devout with a Quaker sensitivity and an incipient evangelicalism. In this poem, the devout Miram seeks to convert her Muslim master with appeals to beauty. Like most of his later poems, this poem is beautifully constructed yet easily accessible to the reader. A fine copy of the first edition (the later printings were by James Osgood and company). Bound in green cloth over beveled boards, lettering gilt, spine lettering gilt, brown coated endpapers, no names or bookplates. A very handsome copy. [BAL 21889].

First printing. 276pp. The author finds that the relationships between reform and rationalization that Weberian theory would imply for the West basicallt hold for Islamic Southeast Asia. Southweat Asian Muslim reformists profess a kind of Protestant Ethic that is associated with a kind of Potestant Ethos: They are Muslim Puritans. Yest their Putitansism is Muslim and possesses a distinctively Islamic coloration. A near fine copy bound in green cloth, spine lettering silver, in near fine pictorial dust jacket.

New York; (1970): Burt Franklin. Octavo. lvi, 200 pages, translated, with notes, a preface, and an introductory life of the Timour Br by Clements R. Markham, with folding map of Clavijo's travels through the Islamic states all the way to Samarkand. One of the most valuable sources for the Timurid period is the narrative of the embassy of Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo to the court of Timur at Samarcand in 1403-1406 whose travel laid through Iran. Bound in blue cloth, spine lettering gilt. A near fine copy.

Paris: E. Lerous, 1889. Quarto. x-202 pages. French text. One of the most important primary sources in translation of the author, Usamai ibn Munqid, who was born in the first year of the First Crusade (1095) to a family who were the lords over the Shayzar Fortress on the River Orontes. His position gave him first hand contact not only with the major Syrian princes but also with Saladin himself. His view of the Franks led him to say: May Allah's curse be upon them. His education in the court included the Quran but also rhetoric, calligraphy and poetry. One of the most important contemporary histories of the Crusades. It is no wonder that he was called "a hero of Islam". He describes perhaps with disgust the behavior of the Franks, also he tells of the heroic acts of women in the struggle. A very good copy of an important work with some chipping or rubbing and some toning to pages/.

(Washington, D. C.: Embassy of Pakistan, nd.ca.1965). Octavo. xiii; 110pp. index. with laid in letter from the Economic Minister of Pakistan. Written by the President of Pakistan which deals with several issues , in particular, those dealing with India and the Kashmir question. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 was a disaster that angered many Pakistanis who felt betrayed by the settlement. The letter on Embassy stationery addressed to Jack O'Reilly (spelled Oreilly in letter and envelope) notes the question of self-determination for the people of Kashmir. Signed by S.M. Sulaiman, Economic Minister of Pakistan. He also encloses a typical promotional pamphlet on Pakistan. Bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt small stain to lower corner of upper board, in rubbed dust jackt with some chipping to spine ends, and a dampstain to underside of jacket, internally clean.

The original edition of the great Orientlist whose extensive work in Palestinian folk songs, and poetry became the classic way to understand the rich proverbs, poetry and use of irony by the Palestinians at the end of the Nineteenth Century. A scarce work.

Bibliography, contributors, and index., The author wondered how the African Muslim landscape looked like by the next African Studies Association meeting> More important, what was the true state of Islamism in sub Saharan Africa? The author traveled there to see and write what he found. While there, the Niger riots had broken out following the government's ratification of the UN convention agains gender discrimination in 1999. In 2000 because of a fashion show, it was condemed as profligate by the demonstration's religious leaders. An interesting look at Islam in West Africa, along with the turmoil and rioting. A fine copy bound in green cloth letterred in cream, spine lettering cream.

Mexico: Editorial Anthony. octavo. 1957-1967. Illustrations, facsimiles, bloodlines, maps, portraits. Dr. John Erich Flade quoted Raswan: "We never own a horse; it is entrusted to us." The classic set in all seven volumes comprised the knowledge of the great bloodlines, the Bedouin breeders of the last 100 years of the Arabians that made their way to Europe and America, and details which became essential to those who own and breed Arabians. Whether it was W.K. Kellogg or the Prince Fawaz as-Shaalan, the Arabian world mourned his untimely death. Each volume of his work was printed in small print runs of no more than 250 to 380 copies (some were totally lost in a flood before they could be distributed). Several volumes signed by Raswan in Arabic. Volumes 2-3 are continuous hence no title page for volume III (volume II list 4640, Volume III begins with 4641). Kobenhavn; (1914): H. Hagerup. Small Quarto. 141 pages, 56 illustrations. Danish language. Professor Ole Olufsen was a Danish military officer and explorer who became the Secretary of the Royal Danish Geographical Society whose travels across Asia and Africa also involved careful sociological and cultural observations across North Africa from Algiers to Tunisia. This is the scarce original hardcover edition (later in the year a cheap paper copy was issued). Only recorded copies on OCLC at Yale, Stanford, Wisconsin and Northwestern as well as Danish and German libraries. Bound in 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards, decorative endpapers. A very nice copy with light rubbing along joints.
