Philadelphia; (1855): H.C. Peck & T. Bliss. First Edition. approx. 3 ½" x 4 ½" Engraved frontispiece, 96 pages, illustrated. A book for young people on how to collect natural history. It begins with a boy's uncle helping him to begin collecting sea shells and continues with other aspects of nature. Toward the end, the young boy wants to know more and even in four years when he reaches college age to learn more. He is told by the uncle that if he is industrious, he and his father will help to make it possible. A very good copy of a young boy's book on nature and collecting bound in red cloth decorated in blind, spine gilt, yellow endpapers, only a bit of wear to spine ends.

Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 1964. Octavo. 74pp. Latin & common name, area found given for each bird. No description of bird itself. Bound in tan paper wraps lettered in black, upper corners chipped and creased, lower corner chipped with creasing to a few leaves. A good copy.

London: British Museum, 1966. Paper Monograph. Very Good. Ocatvo. p. 4-115. Thirty-eight species distributed in 34 genera of Cheilostomata are identified in a collection of Polyzoa from the Upper Bracklesham Beds at Selsey, Essex. All the species are described and one species is renamed. This study remains esential in interpeting paleogeography in Late Eocene times. Illustrations throughout. Only two copies recorded in OCLC. light wear at bottom of spine, no marks.

New York: Viking, 1961. First Edition. Octavo. Signed by the author on the half-title page. 280 pages, index, illustrated with photographic images. A thousand miles beyond the south. One of the finest accounts of the land of dark purple shadows. This work goes into areas often missed by explorers and at times he touches on the same travels as Richard Dana in "Two Years Before the Mast," and Charles Darwin in his "Voyage of the Beagle but in Matthiessen's travels, there are rich descriptions showing areas still virtually unknown which are not accessible by the modern means of travel. Bound in black cloth stamped in blind, spine lettering gilt, endpapers are maps, two corners only very minutely bumped, near fine in clipped pictorial dust jacket with some rubbing to rear joint and spine ends. A very nice copy.

Herrin, IL: The Trovillion Private Press, 1948. Limited Edition. Small Octavo. 53 (4) pp. illustrated. Limited to 997 copies, the present copy is #310 signed by Violet Trovillion. Originally published in 1617. For a full century after its appearance in 1617, Lawson's book held the field unopposed as the first women's gardening book. In 1716, almost one hundred years later, Charles Evelyn published his Lady's Recreation. Nearly another century and a half before there appeared what might be classed as the first modern treatise written for women gardeners when Mrs. Jane Webb Louden published her Gardening for Ladies. Lawson's pioneering work remains the most attractive and to this day has destroyed none of its pleasant charms. Bound in brown cloth lettered and stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, blue endpapers decoratively stamped in brown. Near fine.

Interior clean and tight, without marks,. The orange colored wrappers are lightly soiled, and the spine is darkened and torn at the lower end.

Unusual to find copies in such remarkable condition, unmarked in anyway with the original dust jacket. This was the Eighth Amherst Expedition. Here there is a report on the expedition describing the materials and reaching the conclusions from the extensive data. Bibliographic references.

The Exiled Writers Committee was a project to raise money for writers who had been exiled by the Third Reich. They were a part of the anti-Stalinist left wing. In February 1941, they asked major authors who were in sympathy with the Exiled Writers to sign and inscribe a book for an auction to raise funds for them. (It should be no surprise that though its supporters were anti-Stalinist, the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover considered them subversive). Edith M. Patch was the first successful professional woman entomologist in the United States. "Greetings to the Exiled Writers Committee, February 14, 1941. Ithica, New York: Society for the Stud of Amphibians and Reptiles, 2022. Octavo. The Original 9 volume sets issued in five plus the atlas volume. French text. (9 volumes plus an atlas of colored plates, 1834-1854). This latter work, generally known as "D & B," has been reprinted and is still considered the most comprehensive work ever done, it covers the internal anatomy, physiology, and the associated literature. Karl Patterson Schmit wrote: "It was the crowning work of a century of herpetoloigcla studies". The value of this full-size facsimile work is that it is not only complete but carefully edited for clarity. The 120 finely exectuted plates are reprinted in both colored and uncolored states because the original coloring sometimes obscured details of scutellation. The volume have nearly 7,000 pages. Limited to 500 sets. It will be essential not only for herpetologists, but also for the serious student on conservation.

In two volumes, a new edition, revised and enlarged, engraved title page, half-title and regular title page, containing 96 colored plates each with blank page prior to plate itself to ward off any off-setting to the previous text, 2 additional color plates of the vegetable kingdom numbered 99 and 100. with tissue guards present, and an engraved portrait of the author. paginations; Vol. 1: Lv, 1-4; Vol. II: Vol. II: xxxvi, 1-4. i.e. each plate is described within 4 numbered pages giving its name, what family it belongs to, where it is to be found, its botanical analysis, classification, essential characters, natural history, chemical and medical properties along with its uses). A handsome set with very minor occasional spots of foxing to plates, mostly marginal, bound in publisher's black embossed cloth, professionally rebacked with original spine laid down, endpapers renewed, chipping to upper joint of volume two,, wear to corners. Very nice.

Engraved portrait frontispiece 480 through 902pp [1]pp. table and [13]pp. general index(though it is paginated [899]-901) Volume two contains the half-title. Contains 258 hand-colored engravings by Henderson and engraved by Bewick, bound in contemporary 3/4 red morocco over marbled paper covered boards, spines elaborately gilt lettered and decorated, outer joints appear to have been strengthened at some point, corners rounded, internally clean and bright with the exception of the index which has browning. A handsome copy.

The present copy if from an original subscriber with her card laid in. 275pp., The illustrations are printed by the deeptone process. The first part of the book introduces the flowers. The second part of the volume is a complete list of the works of the 18th and early 19th centuries which contain flower prints. Full descriptions of the prints, names of artists, engravers and publishers are given together with other details and indices. Through this work, it will now be [possible to identify nearly all flower and fruit prints of this period and trace their provenance. Bound in a coated linen cloth over beveled boards, central green leather pastedown lettered and decorated in gilt, leather spine label gilt, There is a stain to spine, housed within green cloth covered slipcase with soft inside lining for protection.

An extraordinarily rare printing of perhaps 25 copies, 38, [7] pp. Privately printed by mimeograph by the author who, after suffering a horrible accident when a horse fell on him during a London Hunt and Country Club, retired from hunting and became devoted to fly fishing. After becoming the Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario, he fished the Restigouche and it is probably that river he refers to in The Fly Leaf. A much later edition was privately printed in London, Ontario, in June 1968, 30 pp., in a smaller format. Cronyn is quoted in Maclean's (June 1, 1968), discussing his plans to publish the 1968 pamphlet: "It's dreadfully boring," says Cronyn, "-except for the man who wants to learn to cast a fly." He has a few pages aimed at beginners and then moves into very detailed additional procedures and preparations with a precise chart on the issues of nylon, silk, weights, length, and torpedo level.
