After opening with his experiences with man-eating lions, Patterson details his work during the expedition into the great northern game reserve of British East Africa which he penetrated into the little known regions. His sketch maps of the Guaso Nyiro are good material for the improvement of the mapping of this part of Africa in the early 20th Century. The incidents of this journey are of unique interest and the author's description of the country and its peoples and the wild animals. Col. Patterson's writings on Africa and hunting include the legendary night he spent in hiding at a solitary water hole and' his record of what he saw when he was alone with many varieties of animals from giraffes to lions (pp. 259-263). This last account remains one of the most important firsthand accounts of hunting in Africa. A very good copy of one of the most desirable African hunting classics. A handsome copy on Kwame Nkrumah who was President of Ghana which remains one of the best assessments of an African country in its transition from the days of Colonialism to independence and statehood. It also has a history of countries that at the time were nearing independence and the problems they were facing. Bound in red cloth, spine lettering gilt, a near fine copy in near fine dust jacket printed in black, slightly rubbed. Very nice.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1913. Small Quarto. pp. 279-298 illustrated with photographs and a drawing by Philip R. Goodman. A first rate article of what Roosevelt observed about the African lion. This article is in no sense about hunting. Far more interesting than the chase itself is the observation. This article represents an attempt to present the life histories of the most interesting among the beast of the African junlges, the lion. They are based mainly on first hand observations, but are also in part based on the cumulative observations of many other men. Bound in original paper wraps lettered and decorated in red and black, chipping to spine ends, edges just a bit worn. A very nice, clean copy.

New York: Adams, Victor and Co, 1872. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece, xii, 292 pages includes the map of Livingstone's Watershed and New Sources of the Nile. Besides his early observations on the sources of the Nile, his writings on the slave trade (p. 268-292 made this an important contribution despite some of the earlier references of the incipient racism in England. The author is also known as the husband of Mrs. Beeton whose cookbooks became the best-selling of its era. As a publisher, he had also secured the first UK rights to Uncle Tom's Cabin which brought about his early fortune. Bound in brown pictorial gilt cloth lettered in gilt, spine gilt, light blue endpapers. A very good copy with soiling to covers.

Portrait frontispiece of Churchill. half-title, 226pp., [16]p. publisher's catalog at the rear, illustrated with three maps and photographic illustrations by the author and Lt. Col. Gordon Wilson. While on his journey through Africa, Churchill wrote each day. Many of his writings during this period had already been published in Strand Magazine, which did help him a bit with expenses. The present work is his continuous narrative of the lighter side of his journey which he considered an inspiration and delightful time he spent in the wild while hunting and getting to know the people of Africa. Appendices deal with the Grand Mufti (Egypt) letter to Count Tolsoi, the Italian massacre of the Arab peasants, miss Francies Jennings and Miss Elizabeth Lawrence. Bound in a blue gray cloth lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, old tape used to keep clear mylar on leaving tape residue, spine ends darkened with a black residue(?) corners lightly bumped. Octavo. 288pp. This work is intened as a sequel to the authors monograph on the Nupe peope, A Black Byzantium, the material present there was on economic ad political organization and on kiship and the regulations of adolescence. This work is how the Nupe people have become "Mohammedanized", the influece of Islam steadily encroaching upon the indigenous form of worship. A near fine copy bound in green cloth, spine lettering gilt.

Withey who was the major translator into the Kimbundu language: With the Bible Society's thanks for his work on this translation of the Psalms. London, Jan. 18, 1937". Smith was one of the major figures in African anthorpology and missiology, his work:The Ila-Speaking Peoples of Northern Rhodesia in 1920 has remained a classic in African studies. Lisboa; (1929): Editora Portugal Ultramar. First Edition. Small Octavo. 425pp. 14 photographic plates. Farm was a journalist and writer. This was the author's second book on his travels. The first books was titled Africa misteriosa :cronicas e impressões duma viagem jornalistica nas colónias da Africa Portuguêsa [Mysterious Africa: chronicles and journalistic impressions from a trip in the colonies of Africa Portuguese]. Both were published in the same year. He wrote several other books including his most famous three volume series; Cavalgada Do Sonho [Dream Ride], Terras De Fogo [Fire Grounds] and Vizinhos Do Mar [Sea Neighbors] and more. Bound in 3/4 tan calf over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands with dark brown labels gilt, compartments decoratively stamped in gilt, endpapers with a beautiful large watermark of a bird. A very good copy.

Signed by the editor Neville Dubow and limited to 500 copies(no limitation noted except by editor) The present copy is numbered #68. 112 pages. Index, bibliography, chronology of her life. Irma Stern (1894-1966) is acknowledged as a major painter and one of South Africa's most important pioneer artists. Since she often painted African women, much of the establishment at the time disregarded her importance. Bound in gray cloth lettered in silver. A fine copy in fine pictorial dust jacket.
