It was Lewis Grizzard (the only eyewitness to the event) who said when Mexicans were hung for rebellion against the United States "but it was their country"--The Anglo-Hispanic culture which was far more pronounced in blending in New Mexico; nevertheless, was a main part of Texas history. The author writes: "This was a world of fluid identities." Besides Lorenzo de Zavala, there is the case of Stephen F. Austin who not only shifted his loyalities giving up his U.S. citizenship to become a Mexican national in order to honor a colonization contract his father had made, but many more. What had been the North of Mexico became the American Southwest. An important contribution.

A nice association copy that in 1893 belonged to Elizabeth W. Andrew and Dr. Katherine C. Bushnell, who after completing her M.D. at Northwestern University, became a medical missionary to China and India, She was also a close associate of Frances E. Willard. When the World's W.C.T.U. first convened in 1891, they had just commissioned Mrs. [Elizabeth M.} Andrew and Dr. Kate Bushnell to visit the outposts of the Society, and they reported the result of their remarkable investigations on the open promotion of prostitution of the British troops in Inda. Her report led to Parliament led to the army's ban of the practice. A later bookplate from Los Angeles has Dr. Bushnell in association with Miss Grace M. Todd.

Mencken knew of the eight thick bound volumes in the Enoch Pratt Free Library all labelled "The Hatrack Case". Included here are newspaper and magazine clippings and other sources about one of the most sensational court cases of the 1920's, the attempt to get the April 1926 issue of the American Mercury off the newstand since it contained Herbet Asbury's article "Hatrack" which was consider obscene. It sat buried in the Pratt LIbrary unknown to only a few Mencken scholars for more than thirty years. Here Bode has written the definitive study of the case which was thrown out of court but J. Frank Chase (known as The Last Puritan) was able to get it from going through the mails. This volume is important in dealing with censorship as it existed in the early 20th Century. Major Studies on Contemporary Reformers or Modern Socialists especially emphasizing utopian concepts: Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier, Robert Owen, and Jeremy Bentham. This sixth edition has the additional insights and research of M. Villermain. Here are early pre-Marxist treatments of communism as an ideal. A very nice set bound in 1/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands gilt, lettered, and decorated in gilt. A lovely near fine set.

Library bound in stiff card stock, with black cloth on spine. The interior 2 sides are lightly soiled, and front panel is moderately soiled.

Cairo: Np, 1954. Small Quarto. 7th edition. A signed card is tipped in along with his inscription on the title page: "to my little brother and companion, John Habib, June 1955. 122 leaves(printed on rectos only). This edition was revised by the author. Father Ayrout was an educator and sociologist whose work on the Fellahin (often spelled Fellaheen) was authoritative. It was first published in French in 1940. The International Journal of Middle East Studies has written on his many works on the Fellaheen. He continued to write on the need for land reform in Egypt which keep these peasant agrarian workers from moving from their impoverished state. He founded the Association of Upper Egypt for Education and Development. There is an introduction by Dr. Mohamed Ghallib, Professor of Philosophy, Azhar University. Copies are uncommon. Philadelphia: John Milner Associates, 1989. quarto. When the Redevelopment Authority of Philadelphia authorized the excavation of an early black cemetery (c. 1823-1842), it made the strictest effort also with the help of the Smithsonian to determined much on the health and demography of blacks in early 19th century Philadelphia. 187 pages, plus more than 150 pages of the map, burial places, names of those buried, image of Rev. Henry Simmons; drawings of various kind of coffins (figure 12), image of the large coffin warehouse. Later volumes in the series had an artifact catalog and further analysis. they found ceramics that accompanied the remains, of blacks as well as examples of shoes, and other examples of personal items. Bound in light gray paper wraps printed in black, black comb binding. A fine copy.

(Canam, New York, Dec. 1957 Issue.). Quarto. The book bonus for the Pulp "For Men Only" has one of the earliest pieces of Shaara's writings on the Civil War. This issue also containes Eugene Cunningham's "This Gun is the Law" and Louis L'Amour's "Survival of Mr. Dyea". A good copy with about 3/4" chip off bottom of spine, ink note of date on front cover. These three authors were becoming sufficiently recognized that they could produce some of their best work without resorting to pseudonymns although L'Amour did including his poem in 1937 where he was listed as Louis La Amour.
