His essay on John Locke is among the most important and has led to scholars taking sides on his view. Bound in white linen lettered in gilt, spine plain, previous owner's name to front pastedown, spine browned and exhibits two small holes, light toning to page edges, boards with soiling. A good copy.

Professor Herndon has clarified the issues of Voegelin's rejection of the "the historical Jesus school" and he sees Paul not as an antithesis but one who implies what a Christian social order would look like. A profound book rooted in the sources of Voegelin's neglected works and traces the synthesis through the Reformation. Bound in black cloth, spine lettering gilt, corners only slightly bumped, in pictorial dust jacket.

After lectures on bodily regimen that influenced William Law and Joh Wesley, he began his most serious works. He first wrote the Essay on Regimen consisted of six essays on natural philosophy in which Cheyne explained the interrelationship of mind and body, matter and spirit, employing Newton's theory of the ether as well as his principle of analogy. He reiterated that Newtonian natural philosophy, and particularly the theory of the ether, demonstrated a platonic continuum between matter and spirit which linked mechanism to mysticism. The reason these copies are scarce was that the mid-18th century reading public considered them too abstruse. Bound in a 20th century 1/4 brown leather over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, double black leather spine labels gilt, internally clean and fresh. Cambridge: Cambridge at the University Press, 1897. First Edition. Octavo. xvi, 201, pages. At the age of 11 young Russell was awakened to the beauty of geometry. His senior advisor at Cambridge was Alfred North Whitehead. He felt that the teaching of geometry was on techniques and had not dealt with his epistemological bearings. On the basis of his dissertation Russell was awarded a five-year fellowship in 1895 with his Essay on the Foundations appearing first in 1897 which he called his first philosophical book, which also came to be viewed as a partial defense of Kant's theory that the truth of geometry is a necessary condition of all possible experience. This work so influenced Henri Poincare that Russell was invited to give lecture at the prestigious International Congress of Philosophy held in Paris in 1900, an event that profoundly affected his career. Pennsylvania: The Franklin Library, 1978. Limited Edition. Octavo. 484 pages, signed by the author. Sartre, in his plays, describes the stage as "a different imaginary realm". This edition also has a special introduction by the author where he shows how both No Exit and The Flies had meanings that met the censorship of the Third Reich. No Exit was revived shortly after the Allied invasion. One of the fine works that show the interplay between acting and philosophy. In The Condemned of Altona he deals with both the horror of the death camps and the issues of God. A fine bright copy bound in red leather lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt.

His belief that all celestial objects consist of the same substance that pervades the heavens but the author in a careful study argues that the heavenly stuff applied to the stars only. While it was a time of crisis in Spain, the adaptation of Erasmus' encomium of the liberal arts is covered to the period just before Cadalso's indictment of Salamanca as an institution of regression. The deep commitment to medieval thought was in conflict with the discovery of the New World. Beauchot, Andujar deal with the debate between Sepulveda and Las Casas. Sepulveda saw the lack of moral restraints on the part of the natives as reason to constrain and enslave them so that they would be ready for evangelization. Las Casas, on the other hand, felt that while they lived in a state of nature, they could be won over by the example of those who lived by the pious standards of the Church. Although known in the US as the Harvard Professor of Aerodynamics, he was a logical positivists and here was his most important work on that subject. Has bookplate of the University of Chicago Press dated 1939.

Siessen: Mueller, 1819. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 216p. An interesting history of philosophy that shows the relationship of Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Reid and the importance of Kant (who had just died 15 years earlier). Written in clear German fraktur. Upper front corner is bumped but binding is tight and text is free of notations.
