A very good example. 292pp. Internally clean. Bookplate of Sir Willliam Louis Primrose, Baronet, to front flyleaf, along with a discreet private library label to pastedown. Foreword by Dennis Wheatley; shabby chic éminence grise of London society occult, Black Mass on a Tuesday, genteel orgy at the Dorchester Thursday night. A history of the dark arts, including alchemy, necromancy, witchcraft and all points in between, from the pen of the man who taught Wheatley yoga, guided Crowley through the minefield of London flat rentals, and generally tap danced with skill and resourcefulness all the way from Guyana to the louche drawing rooms of London's occult aristocracy, all brandy, boredom, and Beelzebub.

A tale of the First World War. The frontispiece by John Austen is quite fine.

Gently faded on spine panel; mild wrinkling and two brief, closed tears to upper margins; Near Fine. A truly lovely copy. Woolf's introduction is substantial (16pp) and personal. There was a simultaneous (and seemingly more common) American issue, bound from the same sheets.

Autobiographical novel based on the author's troubled childhood; his parents were Rebecca West and H.G. Wells. Mr. Wells comes out far better in this account than does Ms. West, for whom the author clearly held a deep and contemptful resentment. The first printing is surprisingly uncommon.

A late-career novel by the prolific Welsh novelist and story-writer, now perhaps best known as an intimate friend of D.H. Lawrence. Though framed as a sort of parody of the late-Victorian comedy-of-manners, the current work is actually a rather daring investigation of sex and courtship traditions under the censorious eye of the Welsh Catholic church.
