Tight, Near Fine copy in lightly rubbed jacket. The inscription is to Bernarda Bryson Shahn, and refers to her husband, the painter and printmaker Ben Shahn, who had died the previous year. From the library of Ben and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with estate label tipped in inside front cover.

Children's picture book set in a tenement where two brothers make friends with a reclusive harmonica-playing neighbor.

[Decatur IL: ca 1944-45]. A compact and substantial archive, comprised of 30 signed original drawings, one printed poster, and a large printed sample-book of wartime production advertisements for the Caterpillar Military Engine Company (a wartime subsidiary of the Caterpillar Tractor Company) of Decatur, Illinois. Drawings are on art board, in pen-and-ink (but one, a pencil sketch) measuring about 13" x 16" (or the reverse); a few slightly larger or smaller; one of the smaller drawings, a Christmas-card design, is fully colored. Printed poster (reproducing one of the artworks) measures 14"x11". The sample book, in original tape-backed card wrappers, measures 21"x16" and reproduces 95 advertising pieces created for Caterpillar's war-time production drive, produced between April, 1944 and May, 1945. Overall Very Good. Colonel Arthur T. Lee had a long and storied career in the U.S. Army. He is especially noted for his art; during his service at Fort Davis, he produced many sketches of the area, thus creating an early visual document of the American southwest. Nicely produced catalog for a 1981 Shahn retrospective at Santa Fe East, with text commentaries by John Canaday, Martha Fleischman, Kenneth Prescott and Jacob Schulman. More than 70 works reproduced, included a section in color.

Author's copy, inscribed on front endpaper: "Bernarda Bryson Shahn - my copy - retain." Fine, lacking the dustwrapper. The major monograph on Shahn, written and edited by his wife Bernarda and published three years after his death. This is Bernarda Shahn's file copy. Annotations in Bernarda's hand are laid in on small bits of paper; most have to do with the location of various artworks; a few are more detailed, correcting or modifying aspects of the text. There is also a small (ca. 1" x 3/4"), clipped photographic portrait of Bernarda Shahn laid at front free endpaper (as found).
