Izzy Young was the proprietor of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, a hub of the folk revival as well as of the nascent Lower East Side literary scene of the Sixties.

Washington, D.C.: Peoples Coalition for Peace & Justice, [1971]. Original lithographed poster, 22" x 17' (ca 56cm x 43cm). Printed in three colors on white paperstock. A few stains on verso bleeding faintly through on lighter portions of image, else a bright, Very Good copy, minimally worn -- Very Good / B. Poster promoting the 1971 "Mule Train To Wall Street," an event intended to coincide with the great Mayday Tribe march on Washington, described by some observers as the most poorly planned direct action of the Vietnam era. The action ended with the arrest of some 7,000 marchers before the event even got underway. The central graphic is of a leering death's-head, with inset images of Black and Asian adults and children in distress with title above "Death Has Many Faces We Demand Life!" Artist not identified, but a compelling and uncommon poster.

N.p.: Vietnam Veterans Against the War, 1973. First Edition. Original offset lithographed poster in colors, 56cm x 43cm (22" x 17"). Fine, fresh, apparently unused example. Poster sold as a fundraiser for the defense of the Gainesville Eight, a group of Florida Vietnam veterans who were accused (on dubious evidence) of conspiracy to disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach. All eight defendants, including the reputed ringleader Scott Camil, were eventually acquitted. A rare poster, and this is a lovely, fresh example. Not catalogued in OCLC; we note only one institutionally-held copy (Library of Congress).

Native Oakland author's novel about a young woman entering UC Berkeley, against the backdrop of the anti-war and civil rights conflicts that consumed campus life during the 1970's.

Octavo (21.75cm); beige paper-covered boards and dark brown cloth backstrip, with titles stamped in copper on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [x],[3],4-260,[2]pp. Trivial wear to backstrip, previous owner's name to front endpaper, else Near Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, price-clipped, with a tiny nick to lower rear flap fold. Herr's memoir chronicling his experiences as a war correspondent for Esquire during the Vietnam War, a cornerstone of the literature from this period.

Translates four contemporary articles on education by North Vietnamese authors: Huynh Phan, "Young People and Education"; Tran Huang Tich, "A Special School"; Pham Ké, "Half Study - Half Work Youth"; Tran Huu Tuoc, "Teaching Science in Vietnamese"; Hoang Minh Nghiem, "For The Children's Future;" and Nguyen Quang Hy, "Libraries in the Service of Science and Technology." Includes a section, presumably written by Spragens, on "Liberation Textbooks," with examples from the texts. Spragens was an expatriate American journalist who wrote prolifically on the Viet Nam conflict from a left perspective.

Titled in red to spine, clean and solid, in a bright example of the priceclipped photgraphic dustjacket, with some marginal edgewear and scuffing, fraying to the spine ends, and a couple of small nicks to the spine panel. 282pp. Internally clean. Inscribed by the author to the front flyleaf, with a drawing of a woman and what I think are supposed to represent trees: "To Al, A Real Pal, A Swell Gal, Who Is Leaving Cal, For Or Re Gone, Love Rich." A very upbeat inscription to what is a rather harrowing attempt by a returned US serviceman to make sense of the situation in Vietnam; the political motivations, the plight of the Vietnamese, the plight of the US serving men, and the atrocities committed en masse for reasons that made no particular sense then, and make even less now.

Titled in black to spine and front board, smart and strong in a clean pictorial dustjacket with some trifling wear to the spine ends. A very good, bright copy indeed. 134pp. Internally clean, with some occasional light spotting. An early assessment of the strategic issues facing the US military in Vietnam, the role of guerilla warfare, the capacity and abilities of ARVN troops and a number of other subjects, including the rather optimistic suggestion that the "American fighting men in Vietnam have quickly and effectively adapted themselves to the terrain.

Lovely copy of the author's uncommon second young-adult novel, set on a commune in rural Sonoma County in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Aaron (1923-2019) was a long-tenured professor of English at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California; he is best-known as an author of books for young readers, of which he published more than twenty titles over a five-decade career.

A very good, clean copy indeed. 180pp. Internally clean. A heartfelt and heart-baring account of the on-campus protests and radical revolutions taking place across 1960's America. [63008].

[San Diego: 1970]. Broadside. Single sheet of pale salmon stock, 8-1/2" x 6-1/4"; printed recto-only. Fine. Announces establishment, by the UCSD Art Department in conjunction with chancellor William McGill, of the "George Winne Memorial Shrine...taking George's charred remains as its core, the Shrine will seek to involve and encompass the entire campus....Passive Resistance can only have effect under conditions of complete self-sacrifice. In completing his life, George followed the dictates of law and order: his refusal to disobey the rule of Chancellor McGill and Governor Reagan allowed George to take full responsibility for his actions by turning himself in, in the name of God..." Winne (1947-1970) was a UCSD undergraduate who famously committed suicide by self-immolation on a public plaza at the University of California, San Diego, to protest U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. This memorial broadside not located under title or subject in OCLC.
