Descripción:
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1929 First edition, first printing in binding "A" (first of three bindings, priority undetermined). Original publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt, yellow dust jacket lettered in black. A fine copy in a lightly worn jacket with some shallow loss to the upper spine and mild soiling. An attractive copy in the scarce dust jacket. Edith Wharton's 1929 Hudson River Bracketed follows star-crossed lovers Vance Weston, a naïve young writer, and Halo Spears, an accomplished young woman. The two meet in the Hudson Valley while Vance is convalescing and they reconnect years later in New York City. Halo is married to a sophisticated man, while Vance is trapped in an impulsive marriage. Their bond flourishes despite the hardship and disappointment they both face. Hudson River Bracketed, a prime example of the insightfulness that is consistent with Edith Wharton's work, deals with the constraints of societal expectations, ambition, and fated… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1933 First edition, first printing. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt; black dust jacket lettered in white. Near fine with a touch of rubbing to the spine ends; in a lightly worn jacket with a tear along the spine, spine lightly worn and a small abrasion to the upper spine. Aptly named, Human Nature, this collection of five stories showcases Edith Wharton's ability to skillfully reveal the inner nature of her characters. Often critical, Wharton never veers into sensationalism. The first story, a novella titled "Her Son," centers upon a lonely widow's search for her son. Similar to Ethan Frome, the story builds to a fever pitch of emotion and is undergirded with a deep sense of pity for the fallibility of its characters. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Kew Gardens is a short story that was heavily influenced by the post-Impressionist style of art that was adopted by members the Bloomsbury Group. It was first published separately in May 1919 by Leonard and Virginia’s own Hogarth Press in an edition of 150 copies, bound in wallpaper wrappers which were supplied from Roger Fry’s Omega Workshops. This second edition was produced one month later using similar hand-painted wrappers in an edition of 500. London: The Hogarth Press, 1921 First edition. One of 1000 copies. Illustrated woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. Original brown cloth-backed white paper boards, black woodcut design by Bell to front board. Housed in a custom black cloth folding box with titles in gilt to spine. Near fine book with very light rubbing and foxing to paper boards, and small abrasion to front board. Overall, a fantastic copy. Kirkpatrick A5a. Woolmer 17. Monday or Tuesday is a collection of eight of Woolf's short stories. In addition to the title story "Monday or Tuesday," this volume contains "A Haunted House," "A Society," "The String Quartet," "Blue & Green," and three previously published stories. This set contains all seven of the novels written by the Brontë sisters, who make up arguably the most important literary family in history. While all of their books are significant works of 19th century literature, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights stand out as two of the greatest works in the English language. New York: The Phoenix Bookshop, 1973 Limited first edition. One of 100 numbered copies signed by Bishop (an additional 26 copies lettered A-Z, not for sale, were printed), this being number 28. Original string-tied marbled wrappers, with white label to front wrapper, printed in black. Fine. Overall, a charming and scarce publication. Bishop's "Poem" was first published in the New Yorker in 1972 and later appeared in her acclaimed poetry collection, Geography III (1976). In the semi-autobiographical poem, the narrator finds an old painting of a Nova Scotian town that had "spent 70 years as a minor family relic handed along collaterally to owners who looked at it sometimes, or didn't bother to." The narrator recognizes the town from her youth and reflects on her connection with the painter. Regarded as one of the greatest American poets of the 20th century, Bishop won the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for her second volume of poetry, Poems: North & South/A Cold Spring (1955),… Leer más
