San Francisco: San Francisco Art Institute, 1990. Vintage flyer for a 1990 art exhibition and happening held on Friday May 4, 1990, at the San Francisco Art Institute Lecture Hall. 11 x 8.5 inches. Very Good plus with eight small pinholes.

New York: Self published, 1960. Archive of two pieces from one of the New York Underground's most creative and charismatic orators, Spencer Holst. Includes Holst's self-published first book, "25 Stories" (1960), and a flyer from a reading shortly after publication at The Living Theatre in New York on February 1, 1961. Holst was already a well-known and gifted speaker by the time "25 Stories" was published with the help of his wife, abstract expressionist painter Beate Wheeler. He frequently held audiences with his psychedelic and surrealistic tales and would give performances at Judith Malina and Julian Beck's The Living Theatre, selling copies of "25 Stories" at the show. Holst's work continued to fascinate audiences, and "25 Stories" was reprinted in 1993 by Station Hill Press as the better part of a career-spanning collection, "The Zebra Storyteller." Boarding house owner Mrs. Vivien Leslie (Shirley Booth) reminisces on her affair with the secretive George Leslie (Robert Ryan) and their annual retreats at an Big Sur. Set in Beverly Hills, California. 80 x 80.5 inches. Four panels, folded as issued. About Very Good overall, silverfish damage to center right of top left panel with loss along crease, splitting in creases and some small closed tears at the extremities.

Beverly Hills, CA: United Artists, 1954. Vintage three-sheet poster for the 1953 film. Based on the 1949 novel "The Girl on the Via Flaminia" by Alfred Hayes. Visiting Villefrance in the early 1950s, Robert Teller (Kirk Douglas) reminisces on his time in the US Army in Paris, nearing the end of WWII, and his romance with the beautiful French peasant girl Lise (Dany Robin). New York: Mark Hall Amitin, 1979. Vintage poster for Albee Directs Albee, a forty week international tour of eight Albee one act plays, directed by the playwright. It started in 1978 and was presented by Mark Hall Amitin, the founder of World of Culture. Plays included "The Zoo Story" (1958), "Fam and Yam" (1959), "The Sandbox" (1959), "The American Dream" (1960), "Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse Tung" (1968), "Listening" (1975), and "Counting the Ways" (1976). Though primarily known for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1962), the winner of the Best Play Tony Award and source material for Mike Nichols' landmark film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Edward Albee has produced numerous varied works since his career began with "The Zoo Story" (1958), a play that opened alongside and drew comparisons to Samuel Beckett. New York: Max's Kansas City, 1977. Original flyer for a performance by Alex Chilton at the legendary Max's Kansas City on Thursday, April 21, 1977, squarely in the midst of Chilton's No Wave tenure in Manhattan. Located at 213 Park Avenue South in New York City, Max's Kansas City served as a gathering place for musicians, poets, artists, and politicians in the 1960s and 1970s. In its earliest days, Max's was the choice hangout for artists of the New York School, whose presence attracted an additional layer of jet set due to its location in the city. It was also a favorite hangout of Andy Warhol and his entourage, who dominated the back room. Members of the glam rock scene also held residence, including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Alice Cooper. The Velvet Underground played there regularly, followed in time by Patti Smith, the New York Dolls, and the earliest bands in the New York punk scene. Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1966. Vintage US silkscreen banner poster for the 1966 film. Based on the 1961 novel "The Cypher" by Alex Gordon, about a professor of ancient languages who becomes involved in international intrigue involving a beautiful spy, an oil magnate, and a secret message coded in hieroglyphics. Set in and shot on location in England and Wales. 82 x 24 inches. Rolled. Very Good overall with no restoration, lightly soiled with 2 short closed tears, 3 cello tape shadows and some creasing to left, otherwise bright and unfaded.

San Francisco: The Recorder Publishing Co, 1937. First Edition. Archive of five vintage advertising signs designed by noted Art Deco designer Wana Derge, circa 1933-1937. Signs intended for countertop or streetcar use, one with an unused cardboard display easel affixed to the verso. Included with the collection is a First Edition copy of Derge's posthumously published color and design theory book, "Color, Form and Composition" (1966). A collection of striking and vibrant serigraphs, designed by Derge specifically for the popular California ice cream manufacturer. Each of the signs feature Derge's distinctive signature discreetly printed within the primary color field. Wiki and Wana Derge were a highly successful mother and daughter Art Deco design team based in the Bay Area in the 1930s and 1940s. Wana taught art at the College Women's Club and the City Club of San Francisco beginning in 1931, and continued teaching through her home studio in Berkeley until her death in 1964. San Francisco: Artists' Television Access, 1989. Vintage flyer, created circa 1989, calling for art submissions to the 1990 exhibition "The Big 'War on Drugs' Lie Series," held at Artists' Television Access (ATA) in San Francisco, and sponsored by Not A Pretty Picture Productions. Featuring an illustration of a skull with an Uncle Sam hat, a skeleton hand holding drug paraphernalia, and police, the flyer calls for "art makers" to submit an art piece or a performance proposal "exposing the 'War on Drugs' to public scrutiny." The exhibition was held at ATA from January 5-31, 1990, and included public forums and film screenings. Formed in 1986, the ATA is a San Francisco-based, artist-run nonprofit, which promotes underground and experimental art, as well as providing a screening venue for independent films, exhibitions, performances, workshops, and events. Jake Remy (Warren Oates) and his gang of outlaws need to cross the river into Mexico following a successful robbery, but barge operator Travis (Lee Van Cleef) refuses to let them cross. New York: Andy Warhol Film, 1967. Vintage poster for the 1967 film. The film originally screened at the Hudson Theater in a 95-minute version, although this cut is considered lost. A 109-minute version would screen in 1968 as the first film shown at the New Andy Warhol Garrick Theater, renamed as such after Warhol recovered from being shot by Valerie Solanas. One of several sexploitation influenced films made by Warhol, an episodic story of a biker who has no bike, and is both eroticized by the camera and emasculated by various Warhol superstars throughout. 19 x 25 inches, rolled. US: AG Enterprises, 1979. Vintage poster for the independent, Spanish-language 1979 film. Written, directed, produced, and starring popular Cuban comedian Alvarez Guedes, a farce about an attempt to create an organization representing all the various Hispanic peoples in the United States, despite their cultural differences. 26 x 37.25 inches. Bright and Near Fine, with a small chip to the bottom edge, and faint pencil erasure to same. Folded as issued.

New York: B Movies, 1978. Vintage flyer for the 1978 experimental short film. Prominent members of New York's No Wave film scene and, along with Amos Poe and Eric Mitchell, progenitors of the Cinema of Transgression, Beth and Scott B were a pivotal and galvanizing force in that era's explosion of punk-political filmmaking. The pair would make six films together between 1978 and 1981, largely dealing with themes of individuality, mind control, and sexual domination and submission, and often starring luminaries of the New York Underground. 11 x 17 inches.
