Collection of 37 vintage portrait photographs of actors of the silent film era, circa 1930, all but one with the actor's inscription printed from the negative, and eight with the Paramount Studios logo printed from the negative. Four with stamps on verso stating costs of larger sizes, "25¢ each for 8x10 ... $1.00 each for 11x14." Actors in the collection include: Mary Astor, Richard Barthelmess, Clara Bow, Ann Harding, Leatrice Joy, Myrna Loy, Ramon Novarro, Aileen Pringle, Norma Shearer, and Claire Windsor, among others. Based on the 1925 play "The Deacon," about a cardsharp with a heart of gold. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good, with a small chip at the bottom left corner, and a crease at the bottom right corner.

N.p.: N.p., 1921. Archive of 41 autograph letters from early silent film actor William S. Hart to his fiancée, actress Jane Novak, written on Hart's personal letterhead and dated between May 4 and 26, 1921. Included with the letters are their original mailing envelopes (addressed to Novak's residence at the Biltmore in New York) as well as typescript transcriptions of the letters, with occasional manuscript ink annotations amending errors and providing details on locations, written on Novak's orange and purple letterhead. The archive also contains two typescript pages from an introduction to a children's book written by Hart, the final story in his "Boys Golden West" series, about the adventures of two boys-one Native American boy named Injun and one white boy named Whitey. One of the great Western actors of the early silent film era, Hart quickly gained fame in 1915, after appearing in a series of popular two-reel Western short films for producer Thomas Ince. Archive of eleven photographs of theatre and early film actress Lois Moran, along with two Autograph Letters Signed from Moran, and a newspaper clipping of a 1979 article written by Moran (writing with her married name, Lois Young) for the "Red Rock News" of Sedona, Arizona. Collection also includes a brief autograph inscription signed from Moran to an admirer. The two Autograph Letters Signed are addressed to a Joseph Tufano, apparently an admirer of Moran, responding to Tufano's previous correspondence. Letters are each one leaf, and are dated November 6, 1979, and March 31, 1988, respectively. Included with the 1979 letter is the original mailing envelope. Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1928. Archive of material from the 1928 film. From the estate of actor Monte Blue, who starred in the film. Included in the archive are a carbon typescript draft script, here under the working title "Southern Skies," four vintage photographs, each with a mimeo snipe on the verso, one with a press stamp as well, and a later, 1921 edition of the 1919 travel book by Frederick O'Brien which served as the source material for the film, signed and dated by Blue, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. MGM's first film with a fully prerecorded soundtrack, comprised of music and sound effects, including, most notably, the first time the company's mascot Leo the Lion roared at the film's start, White Shadows in the South Seas doesn't quite classify as a "talkie," as only the single whispered word "hello" appears in the soundtrack. Los Angeles: California Theatre, 1921. Archive of 41 vintage photographs of the elaborate stage sets and live performers which supported silent film screenings at the California Theatre in Los Angeles, taken during the theatre's first three years in operation, 1919-1921. 20 photographs with blindstamps crediting photographer Dick Stagg, and 14 with blindstamps crediting photographer J.C. Milligan. Photographs housed in an album, with typed labels on the versos of the adjacent pages identifying the film, screening dates, performers, and musical numbers. The first two photographs in the archive feature a day shot and a striking night shot of the theatre's beautifully elaborate facade, followed by a photograph of the "original installation" of the stage and grand staircase. The balance of the photographs, however, show theatre sets, usually with performers present, occasionally with the orchestra present, and always without the audience present, likely taken during rehearsals or after the completion… Leer más

Various American Cities: Various, 1970. First Edition. Archive of material relating to Lillian Gish's 1969 memoir "The Movies, Mr. Griffith, and Me," including author Lillian Gish's Olivetti Lettera 22 portable typewriter used to type the manuscript for the book, as well as two manuscripts for the book: one typescript with editorial annotations in manuscript pencil throughout, and one mimeographed copy. The archive also includes a First Edition copy of the book, with the bookplate of actor and producer Frank Buxton affixed to the front pastedown. Bookplate signed by Gish, and laid in with the book is a warm manuscript note from Gish. Also included in the archive are several scripts for Gish's one-woman touring show "Lillian Gish and the Movies-The Art of Film 1900-1928," housed in two binders, circa 1973. Vintage borderless photograph from the 1897 short film, with the number 542 in manuscript pencil on the verso, with a still image from the film corresponding to that number on the website Catalogue Lumiere showing a similar scene. While the importance of the Lumiere Brothers to the invention and popularity of the moving image is well known, director Alexandre Promio, who filmed over 300 shorts for the Lumieres, deserves equal consideration. Of particular note are the series of films he shot while presenting the new technology at the 1897 General Art and Industrial Exposition in Stockholm, Sweden, of which "Arrivee a l'Exposition en bateau" is one. The films represent the first ever shot in the country, and Promio would go on to train pioneering Swedish director Ernest Florman in the art of filmmaking. Beverly Hills, CA: Warner Brothers, 1922. Set of six vintage hand-tinted lobby cards for the 1922 film, including the title card. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1922 novel. A young husband and wife spend money with aplomb, anticipating a large payout once the man's grandfather dies. Trouble ensues, however, when the patriarch passes away and they realize they have been left nothing in his will. Today considered a lost film. 14 x 11 inches. Very Good plus, some with pinholes to the corners.

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1926. Vintage reference photograph from the 1926 film, showing actors Wallace Beery and Raymond Hatton from behind. Printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso. Two adversaries gradually become best friends as they stumble through World War I together. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, lightly edgeworn, with paper tape reinforcements on the verso.

Laid in with the program is a smaller black-and-white bifold program, also produced for showings at Grauman's. During World War I, a wealthy, idle young man joins the US Army's Rainbow Division, and is sent to France to fight, where he befriends two working class men, is hardened by the horrors of war, and falls in love with a French woman. Notable for its realistic depiction of trench warfare, a predecessor to Lewis Milestone's epic antiwar film "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930). Color program: 9 x 12 inches. Six leaves, side stapled, with illustrated wrappers. Very Good, splitting at the binding, with moderate edgewear and age toning. Black-and-white program: 4.5 x 7 inches. Bifold. Near Fine. Newark: Newark Theatre, 1915. Original handbill for a theatrical run of D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" (1915) at the Newark Theatre in Newark, New Jersey. Noted on the bill are cast members Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Donald Crisp, and Raoul Walsh (here spelled "Raul Walsh"), who played John Wilkes Booth. Also noted on the bill is that the film is to be accompanied by a full symphony orchestra under the direction of Albert Pesce, who arranged music for four D.W. Griffith films between 1919 and 1922. An early epic from Griffith, who was inspired by the sprawling Italian productions "Quo Vadis" (1913) and "Cabiria" (1914), films that not only legitimated the feature film runtime but made extensive use of the traveling camera, something Griffith revolutionized in the United States with this film. Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1923. Vintage double weight reference photograph from the 1923 film, showing actors Monte Blue and Marie Prevost. With manuscript pencil annotations regarding layout and the stamp of the N.E.A. Reference Department dated JUL 10 1924 to the verso. A young woman with a troubled marriage attempts to win back her husband. 7.5 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with a small tear to the bottom edge and light soil to the border.

Berlin: Decla-Bioscop AG, 1921. Vintage double weight matte finish reference photograph from the seminal 1920 silent film. Samuel Goldwyn discovered "Caligari" on a trip abroad, and released this film in the US in 1921, at which time 11 x 14 inch photos such as this one were printed on matte paper. Reference number "4" noted in manuscript pencil at the lower right corner of the recto and on the verso as well. The photograph depicts Werner Krauss as Dr. Caligari walking through the streets of the obtuse-appearing city, a prime example of the most basic elements of what would become known as German Expressionism. Producer Erich Pommer put the set design of the film in the hands of designer Hermann Warm and painters Walter Reimann and Walter Rohrig, whom he had met as soldiers while painting sets for a German military theater. N.p.: N.p., 1915. Vintage matte-finish borderless portrait photograph of Theda Bara from the 1915 film, showing actress Theda Bara smiling coyly. Based on Prosper Merimee's 1845 novella. A Spanish soldier falls in love with a passionate Romani woman named Carmen, quickly succumbing to obsession and self-destruction. Director Raoul Walsh pushed the film quickly through production, hoping to finish before rival director Cecil B. DeMille's adaptation, starring Geraldine Farrar, was complete. Today considered a lost film. 7.25 x 9.25 inches. Near Fine.

N.p.: N.p., 1929. Vintage keybook reference photograph from the 1929 film, a late silent film combined with occasional musical and talking sequences, released by Paramount Pictures. Shot on location in San Gabriel, California. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good plus overall.

Beverly Hills, CA: United Artists, 1959. Original lobby card for the 1959 film "The Chaplin Revue," a re-release of three of Charlie Chaplin's earlier films: "A Dog's Life" and "Shoulder Arms" (both from 1918), and his final short film, "The Pilgrim" (1923). Lobby card No. 7 in the set depicts a scene from "Shoulder Arms," where the Tramp is a boot camp private who goes on a mission in enemy territory. The 1959 re-release included a new soundtrack written by Chaplin, designed to increase appeal to modern audiences. Universally acclaimed as an actor, director, and producer, Chaplin and his iconic Tramp character especially captured the hearts of the filmgoing population, and to this day he is considered a legendary innovator in comedic cinema. By rereleasing his films together in this manner he hoped to win over a new generation of audiences to his character, and to an extent it worked. A dancer achieves sudden fame and wealth when she is discovered performing in a Spanish cafe and brought to New York, but soon finds life in high society is more difficult than glamorous.
