Beverly Hills, CA: Charles Chaplin Productions / United Artists, 1959. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1959 re-release of the 1928 silent film, showing actor and director Charlie Chaplin. Several manuscript ink and pencil annotations on the verso. A man wanders into the middle of a circus performance and accidentally becomes a hit. He is hired as a performer, later falling in love with the ringmaster's stepdaughter. Shot on location in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and Glendale, California. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus. Criterion Collection 996. Ebert IV.

Berlin: N.p., 1921. Vintage borderless double weight publicity photograph from the lost 1921 German film, showing actress Ursel Renate Hirt slouched in a chair. Insignia of photographer Alexander Binder from the negative at the bottom right corner the recto, with Binder's stamp and a printed mimeo snipe on the verso. Noted portrait and film photographer Alexander Binder studied photography in Munich before relocating to Berlin, where he captured images of many of Europe's early stars of the burgeoning film industry. Willi Schaeffers' first and only directorial effort. 9 x 6.5 inches. Very Good plus, lightly age toned.

Paris: N.p., 1920. Collected archives of 40 vintage photographs of notorious vaudeville performers Rosie and Jenny Dolly, known professionally as The Dolly Sisters, taken throughout the 1910s and 1920s. Consisting of ten small archives of photographs assiduously assembled over a period of time, with multiple photographers' stamps and signatures on the versos and rectos, respectively. The collection represents a veritable who's who of portrait photographers of the early twentieth century, including Walery, Ruben Sobol, Apeda Studio, The Campbell Studio, Frank Foulsham and A.C. Banfield, Ira D. Schwarz, and James Abbe. Many have been SIGNED directly by the photographers in manuscript pencil on the rectos in addition to the photographer's stamp on the verso. Five photographs note the name of Paris Plaisirs, an early French music and dance magazine, on the bottom right corners of the rectos. Various cities: Various Publishers, 1967. A collection of 10 original lobby cards for the Mexican releases of nine films directed by or featuring Charlie Chaplin. Highlights of this bright, charming collection include lobby cards for the Mexican releases of Chaplin's "Limelight," "King of New York," and "The Circus," as well as two variants for "The Chaplin Revue," seen here as both " La Revisita de Chaplin" and the official release title "La Cabalgata de Chaplin." Also present are three other unidentifiable cards, likely festival days featuring multiple pieces of Chaplin's work, and two cards for documentaries featuring Chaplin: the 1967 "The Funniest Man in the World" and the 1960 "When Comedy was King," translated here simply as "Risas y mas risas," no doubt an appropriate, if slightly misleading, title interpretation. New York, London: Various Publishers, 1957. A collection of nine sheet music scores for eight songs written by or about silent film star Charlie Chaplin, and spanning from some of the earliest appearances of his Tramp character through to the 1957 release of "A King in New York." Please note that the Chaplin signatures in the image are all facsimiles that were printed onto the publications by the publisher. Songs included range from ones inspired by Chaplin, like "Charlie Chaplin Walk," and "Those Charlie Chaplin Feet," to ones composed by Chaplin for use in his films, including "The Gold Rush," and "A King in New York," and even one, "Mandalay" which simply claims (by way of a photo reproduced on the front wrapper) to be Chaplin's favorite. Our personal favorite inclusion would have to be the "Novelty Fox Trot Ukulele" rendition of Chaplin's "With You, Dear, In Bombay" written for "The Gold Rush." Vintage reference photograph from the set of the 1927 silent film, showing actress Carmel Myers and vaudevillian-cartoonist Bert Levy (here visiting the set in a cartoonist capacity). With a mimeo snipe on the verso. A light romantic comedy following a young woman who blackmails her prospective beau into marriage. Now considered a lost film. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine, lightly worn to the bottom left corner and top edge.

Feeling neglected, the wife of an ambitious lawyer embarks on an exploration of Berlin's nightlife, quickly becoming involved in extramarital flirtations and drugs. Shot on location in Bavaria. 7.25 x 9.5 inches. Very Good plus, with a faint vertical crease on the left edge.

Germany: Decla-Bioscop / UFA, 1924. Vintage program for the German premiere of the films "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried" and "Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge" on February 14, 1924. Contains a brief essay by von Harbou, and three additional short essays on the making of the film. Photo illustrated throughout with stills of characters from the films. Also included is a supplemental program for UFA theaters, featuring another brief essay on the film by starring actor Rudolf Klein-Rogge, information and photographs relating to UFA theaters, and advertisements. Text of both items in German. Based on the thirteenth century epic poem "Nibelungenlied." Program: Near Fine in heavy paper wrappers and string binding. Elegant owner name on the front wrapper, with a light diagonal crease to the same, and light fading to the edges. Berlin: Film-Kurier, 1924. Original German programs for duology "Die Nibelungen," one each for "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried" and "Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge." Based on the thirteenth century epic poem "Nibelungenlied." Text in German. Film-Kurier was the first German film journal, published daily beginning in 1919. Film-Kurier's classic era lasted until 1933, when its publisher, Alfred Weiner, had to flee Germany because of his Jewish origins. The issues from this era remain striking to this day because they were printed using a gravure reproduction process. Each day's issue would focus on a single film. 9 x 11.75 inches. Each program six pages, folded loose leaves as issued. Very Good plus, with a horizontal fold, tiny pinholes to the corners, and an occasional short closed tear. Masters of Cinema 46.

From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler. Based on John Monk Saunders' 1928 story "The Dock Walloper." A roughneck sailor on shore leave saves a working girl from suicide by drowning, and the two begin a passionate relationship. Widely considered one of director Josef von Sternberg's finest films, heightened by the work of cinematographer Harold Rosson and set designer Hans Dreier, released at the very end of the silent era. Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1926. Vintage program for the 1926 silent film. Based on the 1821 epic poem by Lord Byron, about legendary womanizer Don Juan. The first feature-length film to use the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system to provide a musical soundtrack and sound effects (but not spoken dialogue). 12 x 9 inches. Six leaves, side stapled. Near Fine, with light fading to the edges of the wrappers.

N.p.: N.p., 1928. Vintage linen-backed borderless reference photograph from the 1928 film, showing actors Florence Vidor and Lawrence Grant. Based on Warwick Deeping's 1927 novel. Believing his beloved will accept his marriage proposal, a lonely farmer cuts down and sells wood from a beloved stand of trees to update the farm for her. After considering the hardships of farm life, however, the woman chooses to marry a wealthy banker instead, a decision she later comes to regret. Set in Sussex. 7 x 9.25 inches. Faintly toned, else Near Fine.

Based on the unfinished 1832 novel "Dubrovsky" by Alexander Pushkin. A posed shot showing director Brown and stars Valentino and Banky with painter Federico Beltran Masses, a well known figure in Hollywood because of his friendship with William Randolph Hearst. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good, with diagonal chips missing from two corners, but the image largely unaffected.

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1921. Vintage reference photograph of actress May McAvoy from the 1921 silent film. With the stamp of Realart Pictures on the verso. Today considered a lost film. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good, with a few small one inch tears and accompanying creasing to the edges.

N.p.: N.p., 1940. Treatment script for an unproduced film. A recently paroled ex-con gets out of prison and immediately murders someone, leading to a large-scale media scandal. Screenwriter Christy Cabanne was one of the most prolific directors in the history of early American film, beginning in the silent era, later working with Universal on a string of low-budget movies throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Chicago: Wilding Picture Productions, 1940. First Edition. First Edition. A volume produced by Wilding Picture Productions (also known as Wilding Studios), advertising their audiovisual communications services for industrial use. Wilding was founded in Detroit in 1914, moving into the Essanay Building in Chicago in 1937. The company would become one of the largest producers of industrial films over the ensuing decades, and at one point operated out of Cleveland, Hollywood, Chicago, Detroit, and New York. Wilding is today best remembered for producing many of the US Armed Services' training and educational films during World War II. Of particular note in the volume on offer are 37 pages of photographs of Wilding Studios, with sections dedicated to stages and sets, screening and recording rooms, processing laboratories, company players, and field recording. Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1921. Vintage press portrait photograph of Nita Naldi to publicize the 1921 film. With a seller stamp on the verso. Based on the 1914 Broadway play. A moral allegory, wherein Youth (Richard Barthelmess) leaves home at the urgings of Ambition, guided by Experience and Opportunity, and (hopefully) not waylaid by Pleasure, Beauty, Temptation, or Chance. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good, with a horizontal crease to the bottom edge, and light, even toning.

Neuilly-sur-Seine, France: Gaumont, 1913. Vintage double weight matte finish photograph from the legendary 1913 silent film serial. Printed onto heavy card stock for use as the equivalent of a modern day lobby card. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. The first of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces, followed by "Les Vampires" (1915) and "Judex" (1916). Feuillade took the brave task of putting to film Fantomas, already wildly popular with European audiences. The character can be seen as an outgrowth of the "hero thief" character Arsene Lupin from turn-of-the-century French fiction. But unlike Lupin, Fantomas was completely comfortable killing those who got in his way, sadistically and with no small amount of enjoyment. The scene pictured here shows Jaques Dollon (Andre Luguetat) at the police station (sitting at the center), having been framed by Fantomas. With the stamps of Wide World Photos and King Features Syndicate to the verso, along with a mimeo snipe dated 12/13/23. After emigrating to America, two Russian peasant sisters begin very different lives, one posing as a princess and marrying a millionaire, the other continuing to live in poverty. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good, slightly wavy, with the bottom left corner chipped, and a one inch closed tear to the top right corner.
