Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1915. Large folding nautical chat, printed on heavy paper stock. Colored. A rare coastal survey of Cape Canaveral including the Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, and Satellite Beach. Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline, create nautical charts of the coast, and help increase maritime safety since its founding, and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy, pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic, and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. Descripción:
Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, 1742. Engraving with period outline colour. Some mild soiling. Discolouration at centerfold. An elegant map of North and South America, the most accurate to date, produced for the "usage du Roy," Louis XV. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed… Leer más

Descripción:
London: Nourse, Vaillant, Millar, Rocque & Sayer, 1754. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. A highly decorative map of the Americas, evincing Palairet's uniquely elegant aesthetic style This artistically virtuous map embraces the entirety of North and South America, and also takes in the western extremities of Europe and Africa. South America is very well defined, and is divided into the various Spanish domains and Portuguese Brazil. North America is depicted on the eve of the Seven Years War. The English colonies running from Georgia up to Nova Scotia hug the Atlantic seaboard, while the massive French empire consisting of Canada and Louisiana extends through the heart of the continent. Quebec City, the capital of New France, is noted on the map. In the west, California is correctly shown to be a peninsula, while the Pacific Northwest is shown to be an enigma. Mexico and the numerous islands of the Caribbean are also portrayed. The map is adorned with a elegant,… Leer más

Paris: Imprimerie du Departement de la Marine, 1766. Engraved map. Sheet size: 25 1/2 x 37 1/4 inches. Large detailed map of Jamaica and sea chart of the region from the Hydrographie Françcoise. This detailed map of Jamaica, shown divided into parishes, includes strong topographical details with many coastal toponyms, as well as the coastlines of southern Cuba and western Haiti. Bellin, the official hydrographer to Louis XV, and master of the Dépot des Cartes et Plans de La Marine, had access to the most advanced cartographic resources available to the French state. The present map is one of his finest works, and was included as part of the L'Hydrographie Française, a great sea atlas, published by Bellin in two volumes from 1755 to 1766. The map was also sold separately, as indicated in the lower right corner of the map for a price of "Cinquante Sols." Bellin was so highly regarded that the British (who were almost always at war with France) made him a member of their Royal Society. Kapp 66.

Descripción:
Paris: Robert de Vaugondy, 1755. Copper-engraved map, engraved by Haussard. Hand-colored in outline. The later French edition the famed Fry-Jefferson map of Virginia, the most important 18th century map of Virginia. By the middle of the 18th-century there was an urgent need for a new and accurate map of the colony of Virginia. "To resolve the crisis, the Board of Trade and Plantations in London instructed acting governor Lewis Burwell to appoint 'the most proper and best qualified' surveyors to compile the needed map. Burwell, turned to Albermarle County surveyor, Joshua Fry, and deputy surveyor, Peter Jefferson, to create the new map. Fry and Jefferson were ideal choices ... [as they had already accumulated a great deal of first-hand knowledge about the area to be mapped.] They finished their manuscript in the summer of 1751" (Stephenson & McKee p.83). The first issue of the map appeared in 1753-4 and it was revised and re-published in 1755. This re-issue became "the preeminent map of Virginia for… Leer más

Amsterdam: Covens and Mortier, 1757. Engraved with early outline colour. Printed on laid paper. In perfect condition. Image size: 18 1/8 x 23 1/8 inches. A handsome 18th-century topographical map of Martinique. This highly detailed map of Martinique delineates the hilly terrain, forests, roads, houses, and even the sugar plantations. The island was to the French what Barbados and Jamaica were to the English: immensely profitable sites for sugar production. Milwaukee: Dyer & Pasmore, 1857. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring. Folds into publisher's blindstamped green cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on upper cover, publisher's ad on the front pastedown. Lovely copy of Chapman's Iowa. This large, early map of Iowa shows each county divided into ranges, with the state's principal towns and numerous rivers identified, as well as both completed and proposed railroad routes illustrated. A printed note in the lower right corner, signed in print by Surveyor General Warner Lewis, states that "this Map of the State of Iowa was projected by Major Jas. A. Reid from the original plats on file in this office, and that it has been carefully compared and is correct." Chapman's map was first published in 1856, with this second issue, published by Dyer & Pasmore, published the year following. Later editions were published in the 1860s. Milwaukee: Silas Chapman, 1856. Colored folding map, 29 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches. Bound into original 16mo. brown cloth folder, gilt-lettered cover. Folder slightly worn and faded. Slight foxing on map. Colors on map generally bright and clean. Overall very good. A variant state of this important Minnesota map, without priority, published in as many as five versions in 1856. Many of the counties west of St. Paul are unidentified or shown in their earlier, larger incarnations, and the region along the north shore of Lake Superior is unmapped. This edition was published by Silas Chapman himself, who produced several pocket maps of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Chapman's maps were reproduced later by other publishers. While some 1856 versions of the map fail to show important geographic features shown here, such as Lake Minnetonka, the present map omits features that appear on other versions, such as the Sioux reservation in Goodhue and Wabasha counties and Houston county, indicating the present version is… Leer más

Boston: printed and sold by John Norman, 1794. Copper engraved sea chart, on seven sheets, unjoined. Greatest dimensions (if joined): approximately 50 x 76 inches. Rare complete copy of the first edition of Norman's chart of the New England coast line on seven sheets. The American Revolution brought an end to Britain's leading role in the mapping of America. The task now fell to the American publishing industry still in its infancy, but with first-hand access to the new surveys that were documenting the rapid growth of the nation. In particular, there was a need for nautical charts for use by the expanding New England commercial fleets. The first American marine atlas, Mathew Clark's A Complete Set of Charts of the Coast of America, was published in Boston in 1790. Two of Clark's charts had been engraved by John Norman, who was inspired to launch his own enterprise. In January 1790, Norman published a notice in the Boston Gazette stating he was currently engraving charts of all the coast of America… Leer más

London, 1781. Engraved chart, the town and border hand-coloured as issued. Minor repaired edge tears. Sheet Size: 22 5/8 x 32 1/2 inches. An important 18th century chart of Louisbourg harbour. Des Barres, of Swiss-Huguenot extraction, studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before continuing on to the Royal Military College at Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the future legendary explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. From 1762, Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, while his colleague, Samuel Holland charted the New England coast. He also managed to gain access to some surveys of the American South, Cuba and Jamaica. In 1774,… Leer más

London: G.G. & J. Robinson, 1799. Original copper engraving. This detailed map shows the south eastern part of Alaska. A fine copy of this engraving from Robinson's edition "usually considered to be the best one in English ... "La Pérouse's expedition was one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America ... The charge to the expedition [which took place between 1785 and 1788] was to examine such parts of the region as had not been explored by Captain Cook; to seek for an interoceanic passage; to make scientific observations on the various countries, peoples, and products; to obtain reliable information about the fur trade and the extent of Spanish settlements in California; and to promote the inducements for French enterprise in that quarter ...
