INSCRIBED by Fisher to Hollywood producer Milton Sperling, who produced the first adaptation of Fisher's fiction to the screen, the seminal 1941 noir, "I Wake Up Screaming": "For Milton Sperling / In sincere appreciation / and with very best wishes for his success, health and happiness / Steve Fisher / Sept. 15, 1941." The inscription was likely made near the end of the film's production, as Fisher co-authored the screenplay in addition to having written the novel, and the film opened in the US a little more than a month later, on October 31, 1941. Sperling worked in Hollywood between 1936 and 1971, and also produced such notable films as Pursued (1947), The Enforcer (1951), and The Battle of the Bulge (1965). Roberts: "January 3rd 1939 / To Walter C. Roberts / In friendship and as a belated Xmas gift. / Your friend / Martin M. Goldsmith." With the front panel and front flap of the excessively rare dust jacket tipped onto the rear endpapers, presumably by Roberts, and Roberts' bookplate and manuscript ink name and Paramount Pictures address noted on the front pastedown. Walter C. Roberts was a dialogue director for Paramount beginning in the 1930s, working mostly uncredited on Westerns and war movies, his most important known credit being his work on the revisionist Western "Warlock" in 1959. One of the rarest film noir source books, and among the earliest inscriptions we have ever encountered, having only seen one other dated in the month of publication. The first inscription, at the front endpaper, reads: "To the Bouchers / with affection / Kenneth Millar / (see Dedication ->)." The second inscription is at the Dedication page, which reads TO TONY, and very cleverly makes use of both Millar's real name and pseudonym, as well as Boucher's: "For Tony and Bill, / Those remarkable men, / This grist from the mill / of Johnny and Ken." Boucher was a legendary figure in the mystery and science fiction world, and is considered to be one of the great proponents of genre fiction as a literary form. The worldwide mystery conference Bouchercon is named for him. A key Macdonald title and the second Lew Archer novel, basis for the 1975 film, the second of two Lew Archer adaptations featuring Paul Newman in the lead role (renamed as "Harper"). Kurt Enoch was the founder of Signet Books and a publisher whose desire was to bring great literature and genre fiction out of the libraries and into the hands of readers. A tremendous association. This edition comprises two Cain novellas: "Everybody Does It" (originally titled "Career in C Major") and "The Embezzler." Both were originally published in the 1944 collection, "Three of a Kind." This edition was the first under the new collected title, "Everybody Does It." Near Fine in wrappers. A very attractive copy.

N.p.: N.p., 1979. Original artwork depicting exotic birds in a glorious psychedelic landscape, created by singer-songwriter Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart. Signed "Van Vliet / 79" on the bottom left corner. From the collection of Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, for whom the painting was made. It was around 1979 that Van Vliet began to contribute artwork to the covers of two of his finest recordings-"Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)" (1978) and "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980). Gary Lucas was the principal guitar player, along with Jeff Moris Tepper, in Beefheart's final configuration of the Magic Band, appearing prominently on Beefheart's last two recordings: the aforementioned "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980) and "Ice Cream for Crow" (1982). Lucas' solo guitar performances of "Flavor Bud Living" and "Evening Bell" on the respective recordings are singular in Beefheart's oeuvre.
