Aviation: Charles Willard, 2 ALS & signed United Cigar Trading Card. 1) 2 ALS (Autograph Letters Signed, meaning handwritten letters) from the '60s, in which historically significant early aviator Charles Forster Willard briefly gives opinions about who invented what in the early years of aviation. But for folds, both letters better than Very Good. Dated in August of 1967 and May of 1968, about ten years before his death in 1977 at age 94. Written on the obverses of two letters of inquiry from a hobbyist / historian. Mentioned are Curtiss, Wright, Cayley, Stringfellow, Boulton, Brookings. Approximately 8.5" x 11". Cleveland, OH: Eaton Manufacturing Company , 1948. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good Plus. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Cleveland, OH: Eaton Manufacturing Company, 1948. First and presumed only edition. TLS tipped in on the inside front cover from director S. Paul Johnston of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences in New York City, signed by him but not dated, presumably accompanied each copy of this book, which was distributed by the Institute to its members. Large quarto, silver cardboard covers, black imprinting, 98 numbered pp. in the main volume, 14 numbered pp. in the separate 1947-1948 supplement. Supplement has yet another TLS from Johnston in it. Both are in better than Very Good condition, with a bit of spotting and creasing, but overall of handsome aspect. Plenty of b&w photographs of aircraft in both pieces, and plenty of detailed and informative text as well. Just a nice bunch for the aviation history collector. lg3

unknown: unknown, 1931. No Binding. Very Good. 7" x 5. uncredited. Dornier Do X (D-1929) Flying Boat, Original, 3 Vintage Photographs, Circa 1931. Claude Dornier design. Flugschiff ("flying ship"), as called by the Dornier company. From the collection of American collector Richard Calow, but these unsigned photographs have no information regarding when, where, or by whom they were taken. All 3 are 7" x 5", unsigned, and just in Very Good condition, due to a corner clip on one and overexposure when the other two were taken. See scans. Probably taken around 1931, certainly no later than early 1933, based on the short flight history of the Do X. Likely taken during the one very long, circuitous flight from Friedrichshafen to New York in 1931, but no evidence exists here to certify that. Claude Dornier's design only ever existed in three examples - the original (this one, the Do X) and two sold to the Italian government, those being the X2, named Umberto Maddalena (I-REDI),… Leer más

Circa 1960: signed photograph, 5.6" x 4", of the very accomplished German test pilot, Fritz Wendel.Wendel is sitting in his aircraft for the shot, though it is none of the warplanes he became famous for test-piloting first. Those include the ME-109E in the thirties, the Me-209 V1 in which he set a world air speed record on April 26, 1939 of 469.22 mph, the ME-209 as a liquid rocket airplane, a jet engine powered Heinkel He280, the Me 210 V2, and on July 18, 1942, he first successfully flew the famed ME-262 as a jet-engine-powered craft with Junkers Jumo engines (it had been test-flown earlier with piston engines, and Wendel himself had flown it it March with BMW jets, but those failed and required and emergency landing).
