Each plant is described in detail, including locations found, previous references, etc, of the over 600 plants, including many orchids, found 1931-1932 in various parts of Sumatra, mostly collected at medium and higher altitudes in the primary forests. Merrill, who also wrote extensively in the botanical area, including of the botany of the Cook voyages, and was with the New York Botanical Garden, provides a good introduction, including references to early material on Sumatra.
