In 1963, Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" changed the way society viewed women, the way women viewed themselves. Thirty years later, "The Fountain Of Age" had much the same impact with the way older Americans saw themselves and their expectations as they aged. Signed and inscribed ("To Tommi and Arnold") by Friedan on the title page. Text shows a tiny crease on the upper corner of a single page of this 671-page volume, which includes notes and an index. Otherwise, text and boards are clean and unmarked, tight and square, not remaindered. Santmyer is best known as the author of "And Ladies of the Club," a 1982 bestseller that brought her to national attention when she was in her eighties and living in a nursing home. "Herbs And Apples" is Santmyer's first novel, originally published in 1925. It is the largely autobiographical story of a young woman, Derrick Thornton, who intends to be a "great writer" and works at that goal at home in Ohio, at college in Massachusetts and at a job in NYC before WWI and love changes her plans. Ellroy's second volume of memoirs, subtitled, "My Pursuit Of Women," details his relationships with women from the time of his parent's divorce and in 1958, aged ten, the "curse" he placed on his mother, "summoning her death," and her murder three months later. All his future relationships with women became a "search for atonement" and a powerful, guilt-ridden force in his writing, taking him far above the ordinary limits of the crime-thriller genre. This is an unread copy, signed by Ellroy on the title page, in Very Fine condition and with a dustjacket in like condition.

Michael Harrison was the pen name of English mystery and fantasy writer, Maurice Rohan, better known today as one of the great Sherlock Holmes scholars and author of several books on Conan Doyle's legendary fictional detective. This book purporting to be, "The Memoirs of Mr. Sherlock Holmes, OM, late Consulting Private Detective-in-Ordinary to Their Majesties Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and King George V," was compiled and edited by Harrison in the form of a memoir written by Holmes himself in 1915 and covering the period 1881-91. Subtitled "A Memoir in the Form of a Novel," set in New England and in England around Oxford, it sets out the life of Oliver Alden. The book, which Santayana at first hesitated to publish because some of its content -- drug use, sexual orientation and atheism -- was, by early 20th century standards, detailed and explicit, gives "the emotions of my experience and not my thoughts or experiences themselves." Originally published in England in 1935 by Constable Publishing, London, this copy is the first printing, first U.S.edition issued by Scribner's Sons in 1936 with the "A" and the publisher's colophon on the copyright page. This biography of President Garfield represents a publishing puzzle: According to Brisbin's biographer, Benjamin Foster, Brisbin published his Garfield biography with the title, "From the Towpath to the White House, a Biography of James Garfield," in 1880 in Philadelphia, and also in 1880 in Hartford as "The Early Life and Public Career of James A. Garfield." In 1881, following Garfield's assassination, Hubbard Bros., the Philadelphia publisher, re-issued the book with additional material under the name William Ralson Balch, an editor and journalist, who had covered Garfield's political career and assassination. However, the new edition did not mention Brisbin as author, Balch being credited as sole author, a stance he maintained throughout his life though, according to Foster, his claim was denied by the Library of Congress. A president of Harvard, chaplain of Congress and author of numerous historical works on the American Revolution and early American leaders including Benjamin Franklin, Gouverneur Morris, Gen. Anthony Wayne, and Ethan Allen. This copy of Washington's "Life,' is from the 1857 printing. The book was originally published in 1839. About 6 x 9 3/4 inches, 562 pages including frontispiece and a print of Martha Washington as well as 9 appendices. Bound in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Boards are moderately worn, with lightly bumped corners and some minor spotting and staining. The spine has faded though lettering remains visible.
