Philadelphia: G.B. Zieber & Co., 1846. This antique hardcover book is bound in brown leather with gilt lettering on a black leather spine label and four gilt bands on the spine. The plain, unadorned covers have some wear at the edges, but all leather is intact, hinges are starting, innerboards and endpapers have browned edges, foxing, wear and soil. Inside, a frontispiece depicts the author holding a copy of this volume. This is an apparent first edition, but the lineage is somewhat unclear, as a later edition (1848) was declared to be a first as well. The book contains essays on issues of morality, civic duty and so on, including a "miniature" biography of George Washington and documents such as the Declaration of Independence, etc. 272 pages, plus 48-page index; approx. 5"x8"..
