Though the bulk of the book includes colour reproductions of botanical drawings of both indigenous and introduced Indian plants by an unknown Portuguese-Indian artist, the introductory material tells a meticulously researched story of discovery of the almost secret life of a Scottish surgeon turned colonial forest administrator and (in effect) director of one of the British East India Company's least known and shortest-lived botanic gardens at Dapuri near Mumbai (Bombay). Henry Noltie's languid yet engaging style belies an acuteness of observation; combining identifications of the illustrations with biographical research into Gibson's family, this book is perhaps the most authoritative monograph of botanical art history to have appeared so far this century.
