Fine condition. Three items issued by L.G. Grund Co. of Philadelphia, wholesale buyers of medicinal roots, barks, herbs, leaves, seeds, &c. Here the company solicits the public to offer them large quantities-"Shipments should not be less than 100 lbs."-of various botanic remedies. One circular lists 65 herbs etc. for which they were seeking, giving the common name for each herb as well some of its alternative or regional names. The other circular lists the prices L.G. Grund Co. will pay per pound. To assist their vendors in finding these herbs, the company also published the Medicinal Root and Herb Plants 20-page booklet with drawings of medicinal root and herb plants.

Charleston: Steam Power_press of Walker & James, 3 Broad-Street, [ca. 1853, per internal date], 32pp. Octavo, illustrated wrappers. General exterior soil; large but mild tideline stain through all pages, not affecting legibility whatsoever. Scarce antebellum South Carolina trade catalog by Lewis M. Hatch (1815-1887), an enterprising Charleston merchant. Hatch's firm offered whale, large and sperm oil and belting for machinists to use in paper and textiles mills. Remarkably, the majority of this catalog (pp7-32) is devoted to the selling of C. Rich and Company's Improved Patent Salamander Safes ("Warranted free from Dampness, as well as Fire-proof") begging the question: exactly how many safes was Hatch selling or hoped to sell? Sixteen pages of this section, alone, are devoted to double-column listings of satisfied customers -appearing first: South Carolinians, Georgians, Alabamians, Floridians and Louisianans-and elsewhere in America. Original wrappers bound into quarter goat with raised bands and gilt spine title; marbled endpapers; ribbon bookmark; top edge gilt. Minor rubbing at tips of covers; very good. First edition, first printing of this novel-play in eleven tableaux. Jarry's peer, Paul Fort, founded Théâtre d'Art (1890-93) at the age of 18 in response to the Naturalistic theater. He also co-founded and edited the literary review Livre d'Art with Jarry and founded Vers et Prose with poet Guillaume Apollinaire.

Binding with general rubbing; small expert tissue mend near title-page gutter; very good. The rare first Spanish edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), published in the same year as the first American edition. This Madrid edition was published and translated by Wenceslao Ayguals de Izco, the social critic, progressive reformer, and highly-influential novelist and publisher. Aygual explicitly imported Stowe's book into Spain as an abolitionist novel with an intent to effect social change. The perception of its publication by Spanish authorities was immediate and significant; they deemed it to be a subversive text and placed it on the Index of Prohibited Books. Unrecorded World War II military directive issued to employees of the Philadelphia Transportation Company on strike in protest against Black employees taking on non-menial jobs. The Philadelphia transit strike of 1944 was the largest racially motivated labor strike of the war. On August 1, 1944, because of wartime labor shortages, newly trained Black workers of the PTC began to take positions as drivers and conductors, jobs previously reserved for whites. By noon that day, with racial tensions rising, 4,500 white employees of the PTC responded by going out on strike, crippling an essential wartime service. Speech on the Kansas-Nebraska Act by the great abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, a leading advocate for civil rights for Black Americans. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed: "Dear Doug-It is obvious that you are not trapped, But have found the way to a freedom Those looking for an Exit have yet to find. I trust you will continue on your way To fulfillment. Love, H. Selby Jr. 11-13-78."  Last Exit was the subject of an obscenity trial in England. It was made into a film in 1989 by the German director Uli Edel.

Last Exit was the subject of an obscenity trial in England. It was made into a film in 1989.

Spine and its lettering slightly darkened and dulled; a very good copy. First edition, first printing; posthumously published. With a poem by Stopford A Brooke and an appreciation by Henry James. Hubert Crackanthorpe, a British writer and critic born in 1870, explored themes of love, passion, and human relationships in his short stories and novels. Despite his brief career, his works were esteemed for their psychological depth and elegant prose.

Legal draft, not completed in full at the time it was written, concerning three Spaulding men of Massachusetts and their plans to erect a sawmill on lands in Brookline and Milford. Abel Spaulding and Joseph Spaulding were both from Pepperrel and Zebulon Spaulding hailed from Cork. The Agreement goes into detail describing each man's responsibilities and rights per the sawmill, flooding of lands, indemnifications, recourse for damages done and so forth.
