Romano Peli and Michaela Versari, founders of the Centro Documentazione Organizzazione (C.D.O.) based in Parma, have contributed two texts in Italian about mail art and the present exhibition. The group organized a series of mail art shows in the 70s and 80s. Dozens of artists from 26 countries are listed, including Vigo, Zabala, Duch, Bruscky, Deisler, Büchler, Kocman, R. Rehfeldt, R. The great rhyme books [issued in Korea] of the eighteenth century were Hwa-Dong jeongeum tongseok un-go [Examination of Rhymes in the Correct Pronunciation of China and the East [viz. Korea], with Comprehensive Explanations] from 1747, Samun seonghwi [Collected Sounds of the Three Rhymes] from 1751, and Eojeong Gyujang jeonun [Royally Commissioned Complete Rhymes of the Palace Library] from 1796. The first of these books was based on the expansion of Samun tonggo from the early eighteenth century. Collection of materials to help prepare for the Qing civil service examinations. The Chinese civilian administration of the Qing empire was carried out by six ministries and various court agencies in Beijing, which headed the regional and local governments of the provinces, prefectures, and counties of China proper. Officials who served in most of the posts in this civilian administration were recruited through a system of examinations. While success at the highest level of the examination system was realized by only a very select few, many classically educated males passed the lower-level examinations, which conferred social status but not, generally speaking, government office. Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Privately Printed by Zhushen hejing zhai 竹深荷淨齋, 1859. An early edition, most likely the first, of this very rare manual on cursive script calligraphy, or cao shu. This script "received [its] final formulation during the Six Dynasties period" (Ledderose, Mi Fu, 7-8). Liang Minxian wrote in the Preface to our book that since the Han dynasty, calligraphers competent in the cursive script exceeded 200. Yet, "under our Dynasty, the learning of characters flourishes; only the cursive script remains little used." Liang thus wrote the present manual for readers to learn cursive script forms by juxtaposing them to the standard script forms. Liang Minxian (courtesy name Xigeng 西庚, style name Zhushen hejing zhai 竹深荷淨齋主人) is said to have been part of the private secretarial staff of He Shaoji 何紹基 (1799-1873), from whom he would have learned cursive script calligraphy. Nicholson (1765-1844), architectural writer and mathematician, "was probably the most prolific communicator on the technical aspects of architecture in the first half of the nineteenth century and his influence should not be underestimated. He wrote at least twenty-seven books and two collaborations, which all went into many reprints and which were still being republished and updated by others well after his death...Furthermore his was one of the leading intellects concerning technical architectural matters and remains to this day essential reading on the period."-ODNB. Wallis (fl. 1771-73), who described himself as an architect, is known only as the author of three pattern-books. When the present book was first issued, it was accompanied by one leaf of Taylor ads. As copies were sold off over a period of many years, a new title-page was printed to accompany the already printed plates with the Taylors' new address ("Nearly opposite Great Turn-Stile, Holborn"), along with the most recently printed Taylor catalogue. This copy is accompanied by a 16-page Taylor catalogue datable to about 1800 (they were now located at No. 59 High Holborn). Nice copy. Bookplate of Edmond L. Rare audiocassette of a Carrión sound work; unrecorded by WorldCat. It was originally recorded in June 1983, and then issued through Time Based Arts the following year. "Trios & Boleros (1983) was produced as a part of a series by a number of artists, writers and composers. The Dutch public broadcasting company VPRO allocated broadcast time to individual, unrelated productions under the umbrella title of 'Art on the Radio, the Radio as Art'. First edition of "the catalogue of the vast library on archaeology and art history collected by Cicognara, himself a notable art historian. It is tantamount to a bibliography of the pre-1820 literature on these subjects, owing to the detailed bibliographical and critical notes to the 4,800 works, and is still frequently consulted and quoted."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 121. In 1824, Cicognara (1767-1834), sold the entire library to Pope Leo XII, who incorporated it into the Vatican Library. Very good uncut set. Le Bas (1707-83), studied under Antoine Hérisset and is famous for his skilled imitations of works by Teniers, Wouwerman, Falens, Coypel, Watteau, Oudry, etc. This catalogue begins with a lengthy and most informative biographical sketch based on notes by Hecquet, a connoisseur of prints and close friend of Le Bas. Courval, vicomte d'Anizy (d. 1788), conseiller of Parlement, amassed a choice group of paintings and prints. This catalogue describes 127 lots, including 51 lots of paintings (by Carracci, Molenaer, Vignon, Hubert Robert, Licherie, Ferret, etc.), four lots of drawings, 52 lots of prints, seven lots of porcelain, ten lots of sculpture, and three miscellaneous group lots. A note at the end of the catalogue advertises the sale of Courval's arms, jewelry, clocks, snuffboxes, desk, etc., on 13 May. Very good copy with sporadic but inoffensive browning. Bound in red cloth, similar to the style favored by the Goncourt brothers. The posthumously issued inventory catalogue - prepared for an en bloc sale - of the famous collection formed by Claude Gros de Boze (1680-1753), the renowned academician and savant. It was an excellent library, notable for its block books and incunabula, including a Gutenberg Bible (lot 18); this catalogue provides the best idea of its contents. Following the publication of the catalogue, two collectors - Boutin and Cotte - purchased the whole library, retaining the books which they desired for their own collections and selling certain precious incunabula to Gaignat. They then turned over the remainder to Gabriel Martin to sell by auction the following year. The rare sale catalogue, fully priced in a contemporary hand, of Louis François Prault (1734-1806), ancien Imprimeur du Roi and son of the great publisher and bookseller Laurent François (1712-80). Prault's firm printed many auction catalogues in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Because of the Constantins relationship with the Prault family, who printed almost all of their sale catalogues, either Guillaume Jean Constantin or his son, Amédée, was the expert for this sale. The present catalogue describes Prault's choice collection of paintings (by Greuze, Lancret, Teniers, Wijnants, van Goyen, etc.), drawings (by Titian, Caravaggio, Panini, Le Sueur, Cochin, etc.), as well as sculpture and ceramics. According to the Preface by Gabriel Martin, La Haye (1684-1753) was a son of one of the Sécretaires du Roi; he became a Fermier General in 1718 and served in this capacity until his death in 1753 at the age of sixty-nine. He was extremely successful and acquired the Hôtel Lambert from the Marquis du Châtelet in 1745 and lived there in great luxury with a large staff. He formed one of the major collections of paintings of the time and his library was considered to be one of the best when compared to those of his contemporaries. For obvious reasons, the collection was strong in works on finance, French history, and government.
