Havana: R. Testar, 1890. Albumen photograph on cardstock mount, image measuring 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches on 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inch mount. A view of an American warship in Havana harbor, likely taken prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain in early 1898. The photographers, Leach and Patterson of Calle San Rafael, published several views of Cuba at this time, mostly of bucolic scenes around Havana and its environs. The American cruiser is similar in design to the U.S.S. Maine with slight differences - two smokestacks instead of three. An excellent example with minor wear to mount and fine image.

Descripción:
France: None Stated, 1900. Postcard measuring 5 ½ x 3 ⅝ inches. Fine condition. Fine. Woody Headspeth - known also as Woody Hadspath or Hedspath, as is written here - was an African-American cyclist who raced mostly in France due to racial prejudice in the United States. Headspeth raced until he was 50 years old in France, working as a mechanic on tracks, and sometimes for Victor Linart. He was in France at the time of the German occupation, and fled to Portugal, where he would die of typhus and tuberculosis. While we can't date this photograph exactly, Headspeth looks to be roughly the same age as other known photographs from his early period in Europe c. 1900-1910.

Windsor, 1833. 8vo, 47 pp. Near Fine. Cyril Pearl was a Vermont-based pro-colonization abolitionist who feuded locally with William Lloyd Garrison on the subject of colonization and acted as a publishing agent in Vermont for the Boston-based The Colonizationist, and Journal of Freedom, a short-lived publication published from 1833-1834 by George W. Light in Boston. In this work, Pearl - writing anonymously - takes issue with Garrison's Thoughts on African Colonization pamphlet and makes a case for African colonization. We find little information on Pearl, save for a mention or two in correspondence relating to Garrison.

New York: Anson P. Norton, 1860. 12mo, wraps, 144 pp. Very Good. An uncommon pro-annexation title on the gold fields of what is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Courtney was commissioned by the editor of the New York Herald to write a pro-annexation treatise. He described the island as a virginal paradise ready for U.S. husbanding and fertilization. The outbreak of the Civil War a year later left these efforts to annex nearly impossible, and Courtney and similar advocates' ambitions were blocked. Spain reannexed Santo Domingo in 1861. A very good minus copy in original wraps with light general wear and some chips to wraps.
