New York: New York: Pride Publishing, 1994. Very good. 10¾" x 8¼". Wrappers. pp. 194. Very good with moderately worn wrappers. This was the Stonewall Edition of the New York Pride Guide. To commemorate the anniversary, sections called "The Viewpoint: Stonewall 25" are interspersed throughout the guide. Each one was a profile of a representative voice, including community activists, authors, professors, and professionals, discussing their perspectives and how the historic event affected their lives. One of the largest gatherings of this anniversary year was the International March on the United Nations to Affirm the Human Rights of Lesbian and Gay People. The goal was to bring their diverse voices together to ". . . build bridges between oppressed groups everywhere, between our isolation as individuals and our strength in community, between our local civil rights struggles and human rights struggles around the world." Washington DC: Fourth of July Hemp Coalition, 2003. Very good +. 14" x 8½". Small poster illustrated recto, text on verso. Very good plus: light edge and corner wear and just a hint of waviness. This quirky poster advertising the 2003 Fourth of July smoke-in at Lafayette Park in Washington DC was illustrated by artist Steve Marcus. Also known as "smarcus," his work may seem familiar as it covered a range of media, including cover art for "High Times", pieces on MTV and the Cartoon Network, animation for the Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication tour, and even a 4' x 2' stained glass piece for the Mesivta Tifereth Jerusalem yeshiva in New York City. When he first delved into the celebration of cannabis through his art, it was 1992 and the government had a hardline stance on drug use, including marijuana. Mainstream public approval that embraced the drug's medicinal benefits was still years away, making his outlaw art even more attractive to an underground subculture. New York City: Stonewall 25/NYC Chapter, 1993. Fine. 8½" x 3½" unfolds to 14" x 8½". Brochure folded vertically in half twice, printed recto and verso. Fine with tiny date written in pencil on rear. Stonewall 25 commemorated the 25th anniversary of the rebellion by organizing one of the largest pride marches for human rights in history. Attendance was estimated at nearly a million people marching to the United Nations in support of gay and lesbian rights. This flier called the public to action when it stated: "NYC area residents rise to the challenge! Help plan and be a part of history's greatest pride celebration!" The event was held in conjunction with other festivities during the month of June, including the Gay Games, PrideFest, a slew of conferences and meetings, a Central Park rally, and a candle light march in honor of the Stonewall heroes. The 1992 Guide reflected the continuing growth of the publication: a switch to glossy paper stock, a 50 page resource directory, hundreds of advertisers supporting the effort and a special section devoted to Long Island Pride and the LGBTQ resources it offered. The theme of "Pride = Power," included a number of articles on the importance of money as it related to both individuals and the movement as a whole. OCLC locates one copy of this issue.

String tied faux black leater over thick boards, titles stamped in black, Seal of the State of Florida in gold on front cover. 201 pages. A fantastic marketing piece for South Florida, meant to be distributed throughout the country to entice business and families to emigrate. The book had three stated goals: to prove to grain and stock farmers of the Corn and Wheat belts that Florida was a more profitable place to produce; that it's a wonderful place to live; to promote the movers and shakers of the area. Dozens of photos accompany a detailed portrayal of the present economic circumstances, a history of Tampa, writeups on Kissimmee, Lakeland, Tarpon Springs, Winter Haven and more. There are also a couple dozen biographies of prominent folks including the Ringling Brothers, John and Charles. A comprehensive look at South Florida commerce in the years before the Depression. The theme this year was a call to action addressed to anyone, not just members of the LGBTQ community, who were supportive of the movement: "Outlaw Outrage Outright Outspoken Outrageous Outstanding." These words were meant to remind others that, "coming out...is a continual process that will engage us our entire lives...we have never had to fight harder for our right to exist." Several articles suggested where the fights were most dire, such as the fight against the religious right in several states, the fight to boycott Colorado for passing an amendment that could take away civil rights protections of gays, and the fight to lift the ban against gays in the military. This is a program for an event honoring Grant Gordon, an African American educator with a significant military record. Gordon grew up in Beloit, Illinois and graduated from Milwaukee State Teachers College in 1940. In addition to being the first-ever African American school principal in Milwaukee, he was a 1st Lieutenant platoon leader of the 320th Barrage Balloon Bn. (VLA)(Colored). Not only was the 320th the first barrage balloon unit it France, it was the only African American unit to come ashore on D-Day. Battery A of the unit was assigned to the 1st Division at Omaha, while Battery C was assigned to the 4th Division on Utah-making them one of very few units assigned to both beaches. El Paso, TX: R. A. Ugalde, 1915. Very good. 8¾" x 5¾". Grey, stapled, photographically illustrated thin card wrappers. Pp. 18. Very good with light edge wear and toned leaves. This is a Spanish-language biography of Pascual Orozco printed in El Paso, Texas. The author laid out the contents of the pamphlet on the cover, separating the work into nine sections. It also relayed the author's assurance of truth to the text therein. Two women were listed as sources, one a female author of "los días del héroe": "The data contained here is true, as I have collected them from the most authoritative sources, and I do not hesitate to consider this humble work as worthy of consultation. The august and venerable author of the days of the hero and his most respectable widow are two of those sources. The other data have been provided to me by high and prestigious bosses who, like General Marcelo Caraveo, were witnesses and companions of the favorite son of Chihuahua." Cleveland, Ohio, 1948. 9" x 6". Bifolium. pp. [4]. Very good with crease from vertical fold; light dust soiling; tape residue at top and bottom of third page. On March 6, 1948, a Cleveland social group known as "The 12 Counts" put on a shindig to celebrate their ninth anniversary at the Paradise Auditorium. The festivities promoted community spirit and include music, speeches, dancing and a salute to other clubs. The program lists an additional 17 African American social groups with whom The 12 Counts interacted. We have been unable to unearth much information regarding the group. A special notice at the top reminded attendees that the events of the evening would be filmed and turned into a movie that would be shown at a future gathering, "so please look your prettiest and act your best." Perhaps further exploration will reveal more about this group, and the movie they made. Reminder of a little known social group that persisted for years in 1940s Cleveland. None located in OCLC. New York, NY: Foundation for Change Inc, 1973. Very good +. 11" x 8½". Bifolium printed all four sides and folded to 3¾" x 8½". Very good plus with minimal wear. This bilingual brochure was produced by an organization focused on improving race relations whose name makes it difficult to research- the Foundation for Change, Inc. ("FFC"). See item 2, above, for more on the FFC. This brochure featured 14 photographic images and printed all of its text in both English and Spanish. The cover was graced with a group shot of Puerto Rican children outside their New York City public school. Six different children's headshots were featured inside the brochure, alongside text describing their physical resemblance to the various ethnicities that make up the Puerto Rican American, including Taino Indians, Spaniards, and Africans. Philadelphia: [Pridefest Philadelphia], 1993. Near fine. 6½" x 4¼" opens to 16¾" x 11". Single leaf brochure folded three times into mini-booklet. Near fine with light edge wear. This brochure promoted the 1993 Pridefest in Philadelphia. Founded by prosecutor and social activist Malcolm Lazin, this three day event was the first of its kind in the nation. It featured art films and exhibitions, educational seminars, athletic competitions, and literature readings. In ten years, it grew from 15 regional organizations presenting programs over the weekend, to a week-long festival with over 76 programs and events. In 2003, its tenth year, the organization changed its name to Equity Forum to embrace an expanded international scope. Not located on OCLC.

Publisher's original brown cloth. 206 pages. A detailed history including chapters on early settlements, the Indian War, the Indian and Negro Missions and more. With the ownership inscription of Jacob Henry Smith, an important Presbyterian minister who served as a visiting chaplain to Confederate Troops in Wilmington and at Virginia. In March, 1865, his Greensboro church was used as a hospital to care for the wounded of the Battle of Bentonville. Condition: Fair: ex-library complete as issued with unmarked pages showing scattered foxing and a small loss to the upper right corner of the title page. Chicago: Prime Time School Television, 1979. Very good +. 8 3/8" x 11". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 11. Very good plus: bright, with light wear and minor corner dents; rear wrapper with light dust soiling. This is a teacher's guide to the television production of the original Roots. It was created by Prime Time School Television (PTST), an entity created in the late 1970s to "bridge the interests of educators and broadcasters . . . [by making] sure that perhaps the most effective medium of instruction in this country is put to good use by teachers and their students." As of 1978, PTST's director, Newton N. Minow, was also the chairman of PBS, and the firm offered monthly teacher's guides via a subscription service. This guide provided synopses and a short historical context of each Roots episode along with suggested classroom activities. It also has a 20+ title bibliography as well as suggestions for larger and longer term projects. While OCLC locates 22 titles by PTST, it finds no copies of the item on offer. Leer más

San Francisco, California: Bay Area Committee Against the Briggs Initiative, 1978. Very good. 8½" x 11". Flyer printed both sides. Very good: creased at center, a few spots of soiling, and two lines in black felt marker written on mail-in form. This flyer incites action by calling voters to a march and rally to support the defeat of the Briggs Initiative, the 1978 California ballot measure which sought to ban LGBTQ+ teachers from public schools. Its verso provided much information on the initiative as well as why people should oppose it. The Bay Area Committee Against the Briggs Initiative was co-chaired by Paula Lichtenberg, a law librarian who is also a co-founder of the GLBT historical society. [Yates Center, Kansas], 1890. Black and white photograph measuring 7½" x 9½" on card mount measuring 10 7/8" x 13 ¾". Photo very good plus with several light soil spots; mount very good with heavy corner wear. A crisp image of the Woodson Hotel in Yates Center, Kansas, probably taken before the turn of the century. The photo shows a number of men, probably laborers and their bosses, during a break in the digging of a ditch and laying of pipe. A family in a horse-drawn carriage can be seen in the background, as well as a sign for Tom Keene cigars.
