Press of the Times, 1960. 1st Edition . Soft cover. As New. 23 pages. Cover 6" x 9", staple bound in pale gray card with black lettering on the cover. Three of the five parts of the essay are based on a Fulbright lecture delivered at the University of Catania, November 1957. The pamphlet was the first separately published work by Prof. Warner Berthoff, who went on to write The Example of Melville, The Ferment of Realism, Literature and the Continuances of Virtue and other books on American and world literature, during his years of teaching at Bryn Mawr College and Harvard University. The pamphlet, published by the Press of the Times in Berthoff's home town of Oberlin, Ohio, is clean and unmarked, not having been previously removed from the publisher's original packaging since publication in 1960. Front cover discolored from being damp-stuck to another book, wraps heavily creased, 2" separation of front cover from spine at top, small tears at foot; foxing, stains and soil to edges and end papers; front matter pages dog-eared at bottom and slightly so at top. Not ex-library, former owner's name written on ffep, no marks on pages except for one tiny ink spot on page 155.

Pages unmarked. This copy has two newspaper clippings (cuttings) laid in, sources not identified: a review of this book as a distillation of Ward's earlier The Australian Legend, and 1995 obituary of Ward, highlighting his career troubles because of an earlier Communist affiliation.

Name of former owner written on half-title along with notes and old price, underscoring and/or marginalia on approximately 20 pages.

English translations from 23 poets, along with miscellareous inscriptions and drinking songs. Lattimore's two prefaces include list of birthplaces of the poets; concordance matches his numbering with the numbering in various editions of the Greek. Two-page map. Large mass-market paperback (5-1/4" x 8"), wraps stained by foxing spots, foxing to top edge, crease to front top corner, other light shelf wear, old price sticker on front cover and another on back. Mark observed in margin of one page, three lines of page-reference notes written on inside back cover.

The novel was first published in 1877. Mass-market paperback, edges stained blue, wraps soiled, reading crease and crease to spine, shelf wear, foxing to edges, pages age-toned. Some orangish highlighting in the introduction, but it's light.

Four appendices contain a few passages from a different version of the text, the "C-text". English translation of book published in Russian in 2004. Prof. Stanislav Menshikov (1927-2014) was an eminent Russian economist in the Soviet period and thereafter. He co-chaired the Russian branch of Economists Allied for Arms Reduction. Menshikov's books about the USA, such as U.S. Corporations in World Markets (1958) and Millionaires and Managers (1966) provided a differentiated picture that was unusual during the Cold War. In 1988 his conversations with John Kenneth Galbraith were published in the book Capitalism, Communism, Coexistence.
