Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1985. First edition. Fine. One of 1,500 paperback copies, unnumbered, but signed by the author on the cover. A Fine copy. Bound in light blue paper, one of the stapled copies (100 were sewn) with silver, magenta, and black cover design featuring the text "A New Year's Greeting From Black Sparrow Press" and black flyleaves. Alone In A Time Of Armies, was a single poem published as a by Black Sparrow Press for their 1985 "New Year's Greeting." A truly moving piece set in Philadelphia during WWII in which Bukowski reflects on his self-inflicted isolation during a lonely night. With a pleasing cover and title page design reminiscent of artwork by El Lissitzky. Krumhansl 94. Fine.

Toronto: Macmillan Company, 1908. First edition. Original printed wraps, measuring 170 x 117mm and complete in 72 pages. Chipping, wear, and staining to spine and wrap edges; splitting to both joints near the foot of spine. Light toning internally, else unmarked. A scarce piece. Housed in a custom slipcase with chemise, with mottling and wear to cloth. Written during a 1907 trip to Canada, Letters to the Family captures the author's commitment to the British Empire and those who are his "family" through it -- indeed, it is among Kipling's most overt and bare examples of Imperialist propaganda. "These articles are scarcely a travelogue, rather a series of political essays on matters Imperial" and an assertion of Britain's so-called civilizing influence on those nations it colonized (Kipling Society).

Bound in cream and blue boards with red cloth backstrip and maintaining paper title to spine. Minor wear to extremities and two small stains to closed text block foredge. Jacket with expected scuffing with old price sticker and residue on back panel. Fante's novel, and follows the character Arturo Bandini, a "quintessential starving artist" (LA Times) as he dreams and succeeds at being a writer in Los Angeles. Fante imbues Bandini with a similar background as himself and wrote about the character throughout his career, publishing four works often referred to as the Bandini Quartet. Suffering complications and blindness from diabetes, Fante wrote the book via dictation. Fine in Good + dust jacket.

New York: W. W. Norton, 1928. First edition. Very Good +. Original cloth with paper labels to spine and front board. Spine sunned; offsetting to front and rear boards, most obviously to the front label. Corners bumped. Contemporary gift inscription to the front endpaper and bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown, else clean and unmarked internally. A very collectible treatise on race and culture by the Father of Anthropology. Boas was a staunch advocate for equality and sought to create a basic anthropology text that clarified language surrounding race and nationality, and which encouraged more open and informed exchange. Very Good +.

Paris: A.G. Mornay, 1928. First thus. Near Fine. Exemplaire No. 656. Original publisher's pictorial wraps, measuring 200 x 150mm and illustrated throughout. A lovely example, with minor creasing to spine and gentle wear to spine ends. Internally bright, pleasing and fresh. Henri de Renier's first novel is an examination of gender and class dynamics. A mother terrorizes and controls her son; one cousin tries to seduce another; and a forward courtesan and a libertine run rampant. The present example is a visual triumph, as colorful as its characters. A leader in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, the illustrator Barbier brought his own flamboyant personal style to his artwork, resulting in a sense of vibrancy and movement. Near Fine.

Presentation copy, outside of the three hundred numbered and signed copies and the hundred deluxe editions, signed by the author on the limitation page. A Fine copy bound in green cloth boards, with embossed design of acrobats on front board and right marbled endpapers. Interior as new. One of Welty's first short stories written around 1935 (although not seen in print until its 1977 publication in Delta magazine), which gives readers insight into the writer's creative and professional development. Welt herself admits in her introduction that she actually knew very little about the subject of acrobats, but was driven to capture the spell of traveling performers, and in retrospect sees the family story as a central theme carried throughout her career. Fine.

Presentation copy, outside of limited numbered 150 copies and 50 numbered copies specially bound, signed by the author and illustrator on half title. Fine in red marbled boards with black leather backstrip. Trivial scuff near corners, otherwise Fine. Interior with decorative tissue sheet bound before half title and haunting illustrations throughout; bright and clean. Although acclaimed for her dystopian and science fiction tales, Le Guin turns pen to her local environment in this chapbook. Created with her friend, the artist Henk Pander, the book is a response to Mount St. Helens' 1980 eruption and the physical devastation left behind on the natural landscape. As she described it, in order to get a pass to the crater or "Red Zone" (from which the title is drawn) Le Guin, Pander, and photographer Ron Cronin "pulled a few governmental strings. A pleasing example, with a bit of wear to wraps; some browning externally and scattered foxing internally. Some cracking to the spine and along the front joint. Largely known for his poetry, Henri de Regnier shifted toward writing realistic novels and tales in his later career. The present, beautifully illustrated by Barbier, infuses rich color and movement into the narrative. A leader in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Barbier brought his own flamboyant personal style to his artwork, resulting in a sense of vibrancy and movement. Very Good.

This copy is NOT signed by the author on the limitation page. Publisher's pictorial cloth binding retaining delicate paper label to spine. A Near Fine copy in like slipcase, with a hint of sunning to spine and faint toning to pages. Slipcase with minimal shelfwear and some splitting along the lower edge. Milne's nostalgic poem about several young boys -- both good and troublemakers -- and their childhood adventures, from setting off small explosions to breaking pots of jam. A charming work by the same author and illustrator responsible for the beloved Winnie the Pooh books which have shaped multiple generations. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

A ferocious collection of poems returning to some of the author's most trusted subjects—gambling, women, writing—but with an additional sense of retrospection. Bukowski writes knowingly of the working class and fringes of society: unafraid of the recounting everything from the domestic to pornographic. Bukowski's second Henry Chinaski novel, and the prequel to Post Office (although published after), follow's the author's alter ego as he moves from job to job while pursuing his writing and wrestling with his demons. A presentation copy, outside of the limited edition of 200 numbered copies and twenty-six lettered copies, signed by the author on a leaf before the title page. A Fine copy. Bound in salmon-colored boards printed with bingo card design with black cloth backstrip and gilt title on spine. Only the slightest fading to the spine, interior as new. Raymond Carver's short story (also called After the Denim in other publications) follows a retired accountant James Packer and his wife Edith as they play the game Bingo at the local community center. James becomes increasingly annoyed by a younger couple and later resents their seeming lack of troubles. Publisher Herbert Yellin (1935-2014) established his small fine press in Northridge in 1978 to celebrate his favorite modern authors, from poets to science fiction writers. Lord John Press was committed to producing exquisite editions and this copy is a perfect example of that mission. Fine.

Ford, 38th American president, at the English Speaking Union (an educational charity dedicated to public speaking) based in London on November 30th, 1983 for their annual Churchill Lecture and bestowment of a medal of honor. Winston Churchill had served as the chairman for the ESU from 1921-25 and this annual lecture was given in his memory. Ford took his brief to heart and made continual references to Churchill throughout his speech. An interesting and semi-autobiographic look at a political leader's reflection on another major player in 20th century politics. Fine.

A full-page illustration of a knife-swallowing circus perform by Joesph [Joe] Mugnaini, an Italian artist and frequent collaborator of Bradbury's known for his haunting and otherworldly style. Fine.

Welty honed her photographic skills while working in PR for the Works Progress Administration. The photographs in this volume were all taken between 1930-1941 during the Great Depression, however, these fifty images do not just document the struggles of the working poor, but instead capture the joy of daily life and the humanity of Americans from all walks of life. A clean, Fine copy of the book in a bright, fresh jacket that is also just about Fine, save for a small indentation on the front panel near the spine. Originally published in Brazil in 1968 and translated into English here by Edgar Miller, Jr. A classic coming-of-age story, following the mischievous and precocious five-year old Zeze. A fan of pranks and general mischief, Zeze frustrates his family who work hard to support one another. After moving in search of work, Zeze discovers that he can communicate with an orange tree in his new back yard. But tragedy looms, and Zeze must confront the challenges of growing up and the perils of losing what is cherished. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Signed by the editor Pierre Salinger on the front endpaper accompanied by a bookplate for the Salinger Whistlestop Tour personalized for Penny Button: "To Penny with the deep affection of her friend Pierre Salinger." Encyclopedia Britannica's tribute to the recently assassinated president, the collection drew together reminiscences and essays from politicians and literary luminaries including Robert F. Kennedy, John Masefield, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Theodore H. White and Norman Mailer. The dedication was composed by Kennedy's vice president, who now governed in the office of president, Lyndon B.
