Descripción:
Ballantine Books, 1993. Trade paperback. Very Good. 8x6x0. Inscribed by previous owner. Defiant and opionated, Rick Bass has written an inspired essay advocating wolf reintroduction and recolonization, in the context of one, small pack's fate. An environmental issue for all, philosophical for some and yet moral for Bass, the wolf and its return have polarized the whole of the West--igniting the passions of both cattle ranchers and environmentalists, wildlife biologists and hunters. The result of years of personal study and scores of interviews with people both for and against the wolf's return to the Northern Rockies, THE NINEMILE WOLVES is not so much a scientific study as one man's' vigorous, emotional inquiry into the proper relationship between man and nature. RICK BASSâs fiction has received O. Henry Awards, numerous Pushcart Prizes, awards from the Texas Institute of Letters, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation,…

Descripción:
Houghton Mifflin, 1988. Trade paperback. Good. 88x8x132. Some light highlighting. One of this book's virtues is that it does not try to give a complete overview of birding. It concentrates effectively on selected subjects, describing how a complete birder masters, for example, recognition of the different plumages and identification of five difficult bird groups: warblers, hawks, shore birds, terns, and gulls. The chapter on optics, otherwise excellent, unfortunately omits mirror lens telescopes, but compares brands of other optics, which many other write-ups do not. Other sections detail acoustics, the seasons, and the psychology of birding. Entertaining anecdotes illustrate many of Connor's points, for he has associated with many leading birders. Anyone interested in birding should benefit from this thoughtful guide.

Oxford University Press, USA, 1994. Trade paperback. Good. Some highlighting. In Zen and the Way of the Sword, King offers a fascinating look into the mind of the samurai swordsman in a far-reaching account of the role of Zen in the thought, culture, and the martial arts of Japan's soldier elite. An esteemed scholar of Eastern religions, King deftly traces thedevelopment of Zen and discusses the personal nature of its practice, its emphasis on individual discovery and attainment. He then presents an accomplished capsule history of the samurai class, from its rise in the middle ages to formal abolition in the nineteenth century--an account filled withdetails of wars, political maneuvering, and cultural achievements. King also looks at the arms and vocation of the individual samurai, placing the details of armor and weapons in the context of the samurai conception of warfare. In particular, King focuses on the sword--the soul of the samurai, as it was called--describing how it was forged, the…

Scholastic, 1969. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. 6x4x0. The Newbery Honor-winning author of Rascal presents a classic story about a boy's best friend--who's half dog, half wolf, and all heart. With ingenuity and hard work, Robbie Trent manages to convince his parents and his wolf-hating neighbors that Wolf is as hard-working as any dog. Thomas Sterling North (1906 - 1974) was an American author of books for children and adults, including Rascal, a best-seller in 1963. North was a newspaperman, editor, conservationist and naturalist. Ecco Press, 2003. Trade paperback. Good. 7x5x1. With a body twisted by adolescent scoliosis and memories of the brutal death of a woman he loved, Lynn Schooler kept the world at arm's length, drifting through the wilds of Alaska as a commercial fisherman, outdoorsman, and wilderness guide. In 1990, Schooler met Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino, and began a profound friendship cemented by a shared love of adventure and a passionate quest to find the elusive glacier bear, an exceedingly rare creature, seldom seen and shrouded in legend. But only after Hoshino's tragic death from a bear attack does Schooler succeed in photographing the animal -- completing a remarkable journey that ultimately brings new meaning to his life. The Blue Bear is an unforgettable book. Set amid the wild archipelagoes, deep glittering fjords, and dense primordial forests of Alaska's Glacier Coast, it is rich with the lyric sensibility and stunning prose of such nature classics as Barry Lopez's Arctic…

Little, Brown & Company, 1996. Trade paperback. Good. 7x5x0. More than a half-century ago the Canadian Wildlife Service assigned the naturalist Farley Mowat to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. Mowat's account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone-studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for the wolves (who were of no threat to caribou or man) and for a friendly Inuit tribe known as the Ihalmiut ("People of the Deer")-is a work that has become cherished by generations of readers, an indelible record of the myths and magic of wild wolves.
