London: The Fine Art Society, 1881. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to 11" - 13" tall. Thomas Bewick and John Bewick. First Edition Thus, being the first illustrated edition and assembled with the help of the Misses Bewick, presumably the wives of Thomas and John. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover copy, bound in the original publisher's full leather over boards, clean, if lightly toned interior, minimal rubbing to extremities. Quarto format, blind-ruled front cover, lettering to two-tone brown leather. 59 pp., and with 32 illustrations from original wood-blocks by John and Thomas Bewick. New endpapers front and rear, quite bright, and only mild toning to text-block. London: [No Imprint], 1778.. [2],73,[1]pp. Large octavo (signed in 4s). 245 x 155mm. Contemporary, perhaps original marbled wrappers, wholly untrimmed and largely unopened. Some offsetting from the wrappers to adjacent endleaves at edges, crown and toe of spine of wrapper chipped away, some occasional smudges, otherwise a lovely copy in original state. Second (enlarged) edition, after the much more modest list printed by William Bowyer in 1777. The entire work is an amplification, according to the subtitle, of "A Manuscript List of English Bibles, copied from one compiled by the late Joseph Ames. presented to the Lambeth-Library by Dr. Gifford ....," with "later Discoveries of several Learned Gentlemen ...." The identity of the actual printer is not recorded in ESTC. Ducarel was the first lay librarian at Lambeth, serving some 27 years beginning in 1757. While well represented institutionally, copies, particularly when in this near original condition, are uncommon in commerce. ESTC T96267.

London: No imprint, 1778.. Tall 8vo. [2] 73 pp. [1] pp. Printed rectos only. Original marbled wrappers. This is the second, greatly enlarged edition by Ducarel after the original 1777 list printed by William Bowyer and compiled by Joseph Ames. This book was Andrew Ducarel's personal copy and bears his signature dated 1778 on the top corner of the front cover verso. In addition it has his bookplate affixed to the verso's center. The book has at least 9 corrections to the text in Ducarel's hand, several of which are substantial. It is additionally INSCRIBED by Ducarel on the half-title page "Presented by Andrew Ducarel to W. Teggel(?)meyre | July 28th 1781." Ducarel (1713-1785) was a noted English librarian, lawyer, antiquary and archivist. He was keeper of the Lambeth Palace Library from 1757 until his death. Ducarel's numerous publications range from travel to history to law. The book's original marbled wrappers have some chipping at the extremities but the book remains… Leer más
