New York: Columbia University, 1991. Near fine. 153 pp. Featured inside: Czechoslovakian Writers After the Revolution. Columbia arrived on the scene with Nobel laureates in their pages. For its 1977 debut, Columbia: A Journal of Literature & Art got off to an auspicious start, snagging a short story by Nobel Prize–winner Kawabata Yasunari. That piece, “Footfalls,” is reprinted in the current number, 40, alongside work by Raymond Carver, Lorrie Moore, Charles Wright, and A.R. Ammons, and other highlights from the magazine’s impressive first 28 years. The magazine originated in the mind of Daniel Halpern, former chair of the Writing Division of the Columbia School of the Arts and now publisher of Ecco. Columbia, Missouri: Stephens College, 1972. Very good in stapled wraps. 64pp. Tanning at spine. This issue marked the last of the magazine's publishing on a quarterly basis. Up to this edition, Open Places only published poetry. The Editor's Note declares that the magazine will expand to include short fiction as well as poetry and will be published twice yearly. In addition, it states that "Open Places is ready to move into other area of new writing and we hope to publish a better magazine by concentrating our energies in [2 issues yearly]." Contains three poems: 'On the Nature of the Iconic'; 'Transparent Itineraries 1991' and 'Transparent Itineraries 1992', all of which were later collected in the author's New Directions volume Breath's Burials (1995). Scarce. Gustaf Sobin was an American expatriate poet residing in Provence. By 1957 he had graduated from Brown University and had traveled worldwide, visiting Hemingway in Cuba. In 1962, perhaps seeking to emulate Hemingway's earlier example, he moved to France, meeting René Char in his first days in Paris, a poet whose work he greatly admired and whose poetry was to have a great influence on his own.   It took Sobin some years before he was to find his poetic voice, and it was only in 1972 that he wrote what he considered to be his first poem. Purple dust jacket with drawing of a mother's crazed and intense psychological state of mind. 0.75" tear to jacket at top corner of spine and mild wear to foredge, else very good. This is the first English translation of an important novel by one of Spain's foremost contemporary writers. Experimental in form, lacking an obvious narrative line and conventional plot, it is a strange and shocking portrait of a woman's intense incestuous love for her son. One of the few works of fiction to treat the Oedipal relationship from the mother's viewpoint. Professor Bernstein was granted access to the new revisions and incorporated the author's latest changes and additions (among them an unpublished chapter) into this edition.
