This is a revised, refined, and enlarged edition of Clark Seacrest's 1996 comprehensive tome by the same title. Used in research, this copy has some underlining and highlighting—not, however, throughout. The edges and corners of the cover show normal wear. The pages are complete and untorn, and the binding is strong. With dozens of illustrations, appendixes, and bibliography, this book is an excellent source of demimonde Denver's early history made accessible by a 17-page, 4-column index.

Mr. Whitekeys is an Anchorage, Alaska, humorist, performer, and pianist ("white keys"). His book contains an assemblage of his humor as applied to all things Alaska. The topics are sometimes surprising, frequently ribald, often witty, and consistently humorous. He also projects a wry personality that offers a different, humorous, but also often accurate view of the unique State of Alaska.

This first edition is based on the journals and diaries of a group of gold seekers who made a contract among themselves to support one another in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. The account, uncommonly detailed and focused due to the individual accounts of the same events, was assembled and built into a manuscript by Carl Ludwig Lokke, a long-time historian and archivist. Lokke died unexpectedly in the spring of 1960, leaving a manuscript of the saga. Through his wife, Dr. Lokke's manuscript and resources were given to the Norwegian-American Historical Association. Considerable effort was put into refining the manuscript and linking it to documentation, and in 1965, Klondike Saga was published. Current reprints of the book now sell for from $40 to $70! A few of the first editions remain for sale from the low teens to $30.

Captain Jack (1847-1917) fought in the Civil War at age 16, was severely wounded at 17 in the Battle of the Wilderness, became a US Cavalry scout, superior horseman, entertainer, poet, and entrepreneur. He wrote for magazines, became known nationally as The Poet Scout, and between 1886 and 1913, wrote 7 books. Joining the Klondike Gold Rush, in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, he was a civic leader and master of ceremonies for events. He led the 4th of July and Dominion parades.
This book of Captain Jack's adventurous life includes 42 illustrations and has Notes, Bibliography, and Index. For sale at a bargain price, this is a like-new hardbound collectible first edition.

The book is a journal-review copy. Some pages have turned-down corners and pen linings. Otherwise, the book is in good, readable condition. Bibliographic references, index for names, subject index, helpful occasional explanatory footnotes. The review for Journal of the West: In Ibsen plays of the 1890s, Elizabeth Robbins (1862-1952) achieved fame in leading roles, and she remained in the public eye as a social activist and writer of articles, short stories, and novels. Publication of her diary of 1900 contributes to the Robbins canon and adds more tiles to the vast mosaic of the Alaska gold rush period. She chronicles experiences from New York to Alaska, in Nome (June 14- July 26), on the Yukon River, and briefly in Dawson, Eldorado, Skagway, and Juneau. Well edited (I read a rough typescript in 1993), the diary is very readable despite many "etc.s" and some truncated passages. This is number 7 in a series of 36 "We Were There" books for young readers. The series was produced from 1955 to 1963. The book is not simplistic, reads well, and is authentic in its portrayal of the Klondike Gold Rush craze and the rigorous experience for those who joined in it. The author was a writer of short stories, magazine articles, and 17 novels in the noir genre from 1934 to 1977. The historical consultant (each title in the series had one) was Henry W. Clark (1899-1976). He was born in Alaska, became a Harvard grad (1923), was a WW2 veteran, returned to Alaska to become a permanent resident, and authored two histories of Alaska. Copies with descriptions were found for sale at from $13 to $25. Reprints emerged in the 2000s.

Forbes Parkhill (1892-1974) was an early chronicler of the demimonde of Denver's early years. First a journalist, fiction writer, teacher, and screenplay writer for the movies, he eventually became what's called "a Western writer." With a jaunty, professional writing style, Parkhill presents his research about the early notables of his hometown of Denver—the gamblers, high rollers, madams, conmen, and hardened criminals. Aside from an owner's marking on the inside cover and fly page, the pages are unmarked and complete. With 15 period photos, bibliography, and index, this well-told history with its narrative panache has not been superseded.

First published in 1909, this re-issue of Walbran's place-name reference work in 1971 remains a seminal resource for coastal history names and their history. This is a like-new 1977 printing with 20 illustrations.

Ralph Connor, the pen name of Charles William Gordon (1860-1937), was ordained in 1890 in the Canadian Presbyterian Church. He served as a missionary in the western lands, as a chaplain in WWI with a Scottish regiment, continued as a minister and church administrator, and authored 21 books. His writing has been faulted as religiously didactic and simplistic, and fated not to be remembered. In a New Times review of Connor's autobiography in 1938, after the author's death, noted was that his books had sold 5,000,000 copies and that
"The charm of Ralph Connor and his importance to literature are easily explained. He has painted a landscape [the Canadian West] that was vanishing into oblivion. He shows us glimpses of a frontier that, in the nature of things, was bound to disappear as the Dominion [of Canada] developed. In that sense, many of his impressions are a history of the colonial transition."

Mont Hawthorne tells of his experiences with fisheries in the northwest and in the Klondike and Nome Gold Rushes. He was a man of many talents suited to the trails and river that led to the lands of gold. Not many men in the rush had ever held a saw let alone built a riverboat, but Mont had, and after building several with his group, he hired out to help others build theirs. He also knew whitewater on rivers and so shot the Miles Canyon and White Horse Rapids in command of 9 different craft. The first 3 were for his own company's boats but the next 5 were to get close enough to save his dog, Pedro, who had become stranded on a rock within the raging canyon. The last boat was hardly what could be called a boat, but he pitied the young couple who were in it and brought it through, too. Mont's story, copied and transcribed by his niece, captures what seems to be his breathless, often ungrammatical patterns of speech. This assemblage of historical photographs centers on gold in areas around Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, and, perhaps most interestingly and sadly, on gold far off in the Yukon. Of all the long, difficult routes to the Klondike Gold Fields, the worst was the 2000 miles of uncharted territory from Edmonton. Touted by government officials and entrepreneurs as the Edmonton and the All Canadian Route, merchants who rushed to the outpost city grew rich by outfitting stampeding Klondikers. Of the roughly 2000 souls who embarked, only about 163 arrived from 16-to-24 months later. The collection depicts the embarking rush, some locations along the way, and the fallback position of prospecting for gold locally. It was to be found in the region but in quantities nothing like the vast quantities to be taken from the Klondike. As learned in the Foreword, the author as a girl heard stories from her father, Amos Ball, about his trek to the Klondike and the adventures and dangers he encountered in search of gold (1900-1903). From memory and with the aid of his diary and memoirs, Proctor made a manuscript of her father's stories to preserve them for the family's children and for future generations. Supposed is that her husband, a printer, published the manuscript in a limited first edition.
The book is scarce. Only two copies have been found for sale, one for $40 from Canada and one on Ebay for $24.99. This collectible, softbound edition in near-new condition is for sale at a moderate price.

In his studies of Southeast Alaska's Tlingit Native culture, Professor of Anthropology Wally Olson found that the logs of first-contact visitors contained first-hand observations about Native culture (e.g., dress, practices, customs). Archibald Menzies was the botanist and surgeon with the expedition of Captain George Vancouver for his voyages of 1793 and 1794. Menzies had been thought not to have kept a journal during those voyages, but a fair copy of his journal was discovered in Australia. This volume is the first publication of Menzies' journals along with Professor Olson's numerous interpretive and explanatory footnotes. Juneau, Alaska: Klondike Research, 1999. First edition. Paperback. New. This book contains 33 letters by Leroy S. Townsend, a medical doctor from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He came north in 1898 to Valdez to enter Alaska via the Valdez Glacier along with 4,000 gold seekers. He brought a camera, and many of his photographs are published for the first time (59 photographs and illustrations in all). The book also contains an Introduction and Conclusion by Peggy Jean Townsend, a descendant of Dr. Townsend, an Historical Perspective by Alaska Historian Patricia Roppel, a Preface by Art Petersen, the General Editor, an Appendix of five parts, and a comprehensive Index. In the words of Alaska Historian Robert DeArmond, "A good piece of work and a real addition to the literature of this Klondike Centennial period." This tidy compilation includes 18 pieces written by those who experienced the Klondike and Nome gold rushes first hand (Jack London, Rex Beach, William Ogilvie, T.A. Richard, The Klondike Nugget newspaper) and one who came after the rushes but wrote about them tellingly, Robert Service. Of all in the collection, Jack London is given the most number of pages in 5 pieces that are not often found together. Included is his first publication about the Klondike before he was famous. It chronicles his leaving of it in "From Dawson to the Sea" in an open boat (from the Buffalo Express newspaper, NY, 4 June 1899). Another standout among his pieces is his account of running the dangerous Miles Canyon and Whitehorse Rapids in 1897 at age 21, not once but twice, the second in aid of a young couple. This slender, like new hardback first edition with slightly worn dust cover is priced in the mid range of other available copies.

Merill Denison, a Canadian playwright, made the acquaintance of Klondike Mike Mahoney in 1930. A friendship developed over stories Mahoney told of his time in the Klondike Gold Rush, and over time, Denison heard more stories from Mahoney and learned from others and news stories across Canada and Alaska about the man. In the late 1930s, Denison "induced" Mahoney to allow his story to be told and engaged him "in the ordeal of recalling the salient features of adventures" on the "trails of '97 and '98, of Dawson, Nome and Fairbanks, of polar bears and drifting herds of caribou, of Soapy Smith and Dangerous Dan McGrew." Of Denison's biography, a reviewer in the New York Times wrote that "The Klondike gold rush made liars out of most men, and so it did of Klondike Mike Mahoney."
