8vo sheet, [16 x 10 cm].
Maria and Frances Anne Harlock began their school at Banbury Oxfordshire about 1890. The Harlock's were natives of Banbury and the daughters of a local draper and former mayor who used part of the family home as a school until the death of their father in 1923, who was by then 101. As the Harlock's were Quakers good works by the family for the local area was something of a calling. Francis later served on the committee of management of the Friends' School at Sibford and it would appear that the sisters had run their own school on a break-even principle and saw education as a vocation rather than a money making enterprise.

Printed card [11.3 x 7.5 cm].
The card was designed to test pupils attending the school in their competency in arithmetic. The examination was probably half yearly when the guardians of the school would have been provided with these printed cards to test the pupils progress. The questions are on: reduction, rule of three direct, the rule of three, inverse and double rule of three, and so would possibly be directed at the more advance pupils.
The card lists progressively more difficult questions, beginning with 'Question 1 - What is meant by Reduction?' to more the complex' Ques. 4. - When is Reduction performed by Division?' the answer expected was 'All small denominations are brought into greater by dividing with so many of the less as make one of the greater.' This has some some further instructions for the examiner too '[Here let the example be stated, when it has been stated let the Pupil say the table.] In fact even the examiner seems to be given some help in understanding what was expected as… Leer más

12mo, pp. [2], 178; engraved addition title and frontispiece; lacking front free endpaper; original blue cloth decorated in gilt and blind, gilt edges
One of a series of thirteen titles named 'Tales for the People and their Children' that Mary Howitt wrote for publisher Thomas Tegg in the 1840s that were designed to promote middle-class virtues among working class families. They were also more sentimentally described as 'marked by a graceful intelligence, and a simple tenderness, which at once charm the reader, and win their affections for the author.'
The story is chiefly the life of Jane Ford, a servant moving from one household to another, striving to do her best for her employers, who on the whole are mean, tight fisted and critical of her relentless hard work for them. All does come right in the end after many vicissitudes when Jane saves a household from a fire and everyone realises what a true and good person she really is.

Printed ticket of admission [115 x 92mm], with the House of Commons blindstamp, and countersigned' Kenyon M.P.'
The ticket is countersigned by John Kenyon MP, for Bury, for what was a fairly busy day in the House of Commons of Private Bills, Petitions, Returns and Reports, although the recipient of this card probably heard very little of the proceedings. The Ballot, which incidentally was the only form of gambling allowed in the Houses of Parliament, was instituted in the 1880's as more women, than the forty seats allowed, began to apply to witness debates.
'The Ladies' Gallery created by Barry had windows covered with heavy metal grilles, which made it difficult to see or hear. Millicent Fawcett wrote, "One great discomfort of the grille was that the interstices of the heavy brass work were not large enough to allow the victims who sat behind it to focus... it was like using a gigantic pair of spectacles which did not fit, and made the Ladies' Gallery a grand place for getting headaches." Charlotte Yonge wraps her narrative around the folk plays still being performed in rural areas by Mummers. The chapter entitled 'How Father Christmas kept the secret' contains a narrative of a Christmas play that Charlotte Yonge appears to have recorded from her own experience.
This edition, or probably more correctly issue, appears to be a stereotype copy published at a slightly cheaper price two years after the work first appeared in print.

4to, printed bifolio sheet [24 x 19.5 cm], some marks and folds. Addressed to Joseph Hume M.P, and signed by Richard Burchet, R.W. Herman and W.D. Telfer.
In 1845 Richard Burchett became the ringleader of students protesting to the Board of Trade about the teaching methods at the Government School of Design: this was the first attempt to improve the instruction in the principles and practice of ornamental design. The complaint became so serious that eventually a Parliamentary Committee of Enquiry was instituted in 1846 at which he and others gave evidence. Oddly, by that time Burchett had already become a master at the school and so was giving evidence against his own employees to the committee.
This copy was addressed to the radical Joseph Hume M.P who was a close friend of William Williams, another radical M.P. who led the charge of incompetence by the School of Design in the House of Commons. After eight committee meetings it was agreed that the School was not in good shape 'the principles of… Leer más

A well illustrated volume celebrating the first twenty years of this pioneering educational institute.
Sydney Webb and others persuaded the Charity Commissioners to match whatever could be raised from the public, up to the sum of £200,000 to establish polytechnics in South London. By 1891 enough money had been raised to open two polytechnics at Battersea and at Borough Road, Southwark. The aims were "the promotion of the industrial skills, general knowledge, health, and well-being of young men and women" and also for "instruction suitable for persons intending to emigrate". and on the 30 September 1892, the Borough Polytechnic Institute was officially opened by Lord Rosebery, with a remit to educate the local community in a range of practical skills. The Polytechnic specialised in courses that reflected local trades including leather tanning, typography, metalwork, electrical… Leer más

MANUSCRIPT IN INK. 4to, 29 leaves written on verso only, together with a number of blanks; bound in the original limp sheep. An unpublished enquiry into the origins of the Book of Proverbs.Percival, or Percy, Neale Harrison was born in 1874 in Hanley, Staffordshire, and was schooled in Newcastle and at Corpus Christi in Oxford where he graduated with honours. He then studied at Mansfield and also in Germany and at the age of 46 was awarded the degree Doctor of Divinity by the senate of London University. All that is known about his professional life is that he became a Reverend at Salisbury and Reading before settling in Beaconsfield. After the publication of The Problem of the Pastoral Epistles he wrote one other major monograph on the integrity of Polycarp's letter to the Philippians and a companion/supplementary volume to his original study of the Pastoral Epistles. Today, new research has cast much doubt on statistical deductions on the authenticity of the Pastoral Epistles. In this manuscript… Leer más

An account of the four exhibitions that John Robinson Whitley promoted at the Earls Court site in London between 1887–1892.
Whitley (1843-1922) was inspired by earlier state sponsored exhibitions devised by Britain and France, however Whitley arranged for each of his exhibitions to be devoted to a single country. The first exhibition was of the United States and included a Cody Wild West Show, this proved to be both very popular and profitable. Whitley organized three further exhibitions on the same Earls Court site for Italy, France and Germany however the novelty for the public wore off and the the last exhibition was not a commercial success. Whitley decided to move to France and concentrated on developing the resorts of Le Touquet and Hardelot-Plage

4to, printed broadside [22.5 x 18.5 cm], dusty, old folds and marks of having once been mounted in an album.
As one of chief promoters of homeopathy in Brighton, George James Hilbers (1818-1883), took affront to the doctors connected with the Brighton Medical Society who were preventing children and adults being treated under the care of a homeopath practitioner.
The three institutes for women and girls in Brighton that Hilbers was prevented from included St Mary's Hall, for the daughters of clergymen of small income; the Convalescent Ladies Home for sick ladies of small income; and the Industrial Home for Girls at Egremont Place for poor girls and orphans of good character. In each case Hilbers states that the doctors of the town closed ranks rather than let a homeopath treat a willing patient, and it was the patient that was dismissed from the institution rather than there letting Hilbers attend to their needs. Clearly this was something that had been simmering in Hilbers mind for some time as the… Leer más

We know very little of Thomas Carpenter, but in an effort to place him in some sort of context we have been able to give an outline of his life and place in education during the first half of the nineteenth century. Carpenter was born in Blackwall, then a village in Middlesex, but soon subsumed into the East End of London. He taught at an academy at Barking in Essex from the 1790s into the early years of the nineteenth century, as the town had a population of only 1,500 people he may have been in charge of the Free School there which had at that time about 40 girls and boys. When Carpenter was at Barking he had published the first edition of his spelling assistant in 1796. Despite… Leer más

Second, to show how we may defeat and destroy those twin demons - ignorance and indolence - deadliest enemies of our race.'Blake was still promulgating the miasma theory as the main cause of illness and describes the various defects in buildings and sewers contributing to disease. Probably issued as a result of the new legislation of the Married Women's Property Act 1870 this neat and straightforward work contained all the basic information needed for a woman to manage her own money.
'From various classes of society I have heard of the difficulties felt by many at their first attempts in investing money, especially if it be a small sum, which difficulty is increased by the want of experience and knowledge of the "First Lessons in Business Matters." I am therefore desirous, in the following pages, to state clearly and distinctly, in the most simple manner, how to write letters on business, keep accounts, invest and save money, pay taxes, effect a life insurance, make a will, &c., and help those who wish to help themselves.' Chaplain to the English embassy at the Court of Sweden from 1680 to 1687 and 1694-1709, Robinson's ^gAccount of Sweden^g, 'stored with useful information set forth in a style not unlike that of a modern consular report', is a significant portrayal of Swedish politics at the close of the century. It became hugely popular on publication and was translated into several languages.
During his time there, Robinson had so ingratiated himself at the Swedish Court that Marlborough granted him more of a diplomatic than a clerical role. After one bout of negotiations, in which Robinson was used as interpreter, Marlborough commented 'I am persuaded that these gentlemen would be very uneasy should it pass through any other hands'.

After an appearance in a 1729 ^gSelect collection of novels and histories^g and a Glasgow Foulis edition of 1752, this fine Urie printing in a rather large type has a preliminary leaf of Voltaire's appraisal of the historical essay, written by the French novelist and historiographer César Vichard de Saint-Réal (1639–1692). It had been published first in 1674 and was highly esteemed as a model for good historiographic prose up to the end of the 18^sth^s century. Voltaire called the work a 'masterpiece' and compared the author to Sallust.

Jevons writes: 'in preparing this little treatise, I have tried to put the truths of Political Economy into a form suitable for elementary instruction'.
In fact the need to simplify produced a staggering tour de force of economic writing, dealing both with quite advanced theory, such as definitions of utility and wealth, with popular fallacies, including make-work and protectionism, and with credit cycles, including the exposition of a ten year credit cycle which Jevons traces back to the mid-eighteenth century. A Jevons maxim we should all remember he prints in bold type: 'As a general rule, it is foolish to do just what other people are doing, because there are almost sure to be too many people doing the same thing'.
