Descripción:
Paris: Michel Houdiard Editeur, 2001. First edition. 8vo; 158pp; buff printed wrappers, new. Printed here for the first time are over 150 letters from Edith Wharton to her intimate French friend, Leon Belugou, detailing their friendship of over 25 years. Wharton wrote these letters in French and they are faithfully reproduced here. The originals of this correspondence are in Yale's Beinecke Library. Leon Belugou would come to play a crucial role in Edith Wharton's expatriate life. Over the next 25 years they developed an intimate friendship; he was, perhaps, her closest French friend. Leon Belugou (1865-1934) French scholar was introduced into the best "salons" in Paris; in fact, he was private tutor for noble wealthy families, including that of the Duke de Gramont. Although not actually part of the highest French society, he was quite close to them and often acted as a sort of non-clerical Abbe Mugnier when their money or love affairs became compromising. He was known for his tact and ability at… Leer más

New York: NY Woman Suffrage Party, 1917. Leaflet, small 4to, 10-7/16" x 8-1/8" (unfolded), printed on white stock which shows a little age-toning. This leaflet has not been folded so is quite fresh and in fine condition overall. The entry of the United States into World War I caused a rift between the Woman's Party (Alice Paul et al.) which adamantly refused to endorse the war and the National American Woman's Suffrage Association (Carrie Chapman Catt, Anna Howard Shaw et al.) who supported the American War effort. Despite this rift, the suffrage organizations continued to press for votes for women at the state and federal level. In 1917 women won the right to full suffrage in New York - the first Eastern state to have women's suffrage. it was an important victory for the movement. This leaflet points that with World War I countries such as Canada, Italy, Russia, France and "[e]ven little Yucatan" have women's suffrage: "THE WOMEN OF NEW YORK STATE HAVE NO LESS PATRIOTISM, COURAGE OR ABILITY THAN THE… Leer más

Amiens: Sterne/Presse de l'UFR Clerc Universite Picardie, 1992. First Edition, one of 400 copies only. 8vo; 142pp; gray decorated wrappers printed in white on blue label. In 1989, Professor Claudine Lesage, while doing research on Joseph Conrad (who had visited Polish friends in Hyeres when he first came to the Mediterranean), was shown an unsigned manuscript in English (although EW's ex-libris was present) by the librarian at the Municipal Library in Hyeres. Lesage investigated further and found in the Lewis biography that Wharton did tour the Aegean in 1888 with Teddy and James Van Alen and "Mind" Fearn, American Minister to Greece. Lesage was able to determine the year of the cruise by a reference to the date of Easter in the manuscript. And, although unsigned, the manuscript is most definitely in the hand of Mrs. Wharton. Unlike the other posthumously published Wharton manuscript, FAST AND LOOSE (1977), there was no reference or indication that this account of the cruise existed. The text,… Leer más

Descripción:
Camden, N.J.: Victor Talking Machine, 1916. Original shellac recording made February 3, 1916, labeled as "rural comedy" on the label of the record (not so funny if you were a woman!), with Old Country Fiddler at the Party on the second side, record housed in original brown paper envelope, printed on both sides, labeled Victor Record, and listing the artists that the company produced, record housed in black cloth over boards protective clamshell box, leather label stamped in gilt with title and artist on spine. This monologue was probably amusing in its day, describing the excitement in Pineville, VT, about the possibility of woman suffrage, and the founding of the Pineville Women's Rights and General Improvement League. The narrator opines that there is nothing wrong with women voting providing they do it quietly, commenting further the law will never pass as everyone in Vermont was a Republican and the Republican would never approve such a law. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1893. First Edition. 309pp; green cloth, Sarah Wyman Whitman trade binding design with stylized flowering tree front panel, title in gilt on elongated trunk, the tree's roots enclosing the author's name. A tiny bit of rubbing to bottom of spine, endpapers sunned at edges, early owner's pencil signature on ffep, else a very good + copy. This is a selection of nine short stories about Jewett's native Maine. Published just three years before her masterpiece, THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS, these stories show Jewett as a confident and mature writer. Long seen as a minor voice of the local color school, she is now regarded as an American master whose writing influenced Kate Chopin, Willa Cather and others well into the 20th century. BAL 10902. New York: October 22, 1900. Letter. 4 1/2 x 7"; 2pp; written on cream colored personal stationary, folded vertically to form two pages, one crease horizontally for mailing, stamped date at the top of the first page reading "OCT 23 1900," very good. Margaret Sangster (1838-1912) was a magazine editor and author who supplied verse, articles and stories to a number of publications. She edited children's and family pages for Hearth and Home and the Christian Intelligencer and was appointed editor of Harper's Bazaar in 1889. She regarded herself as a "Christian leader of women" and was interested in the welfare of girls. Originally opposed to woman suffrage, she changed her views about 1910 because she saw "the helplessness of woman as a competitor in the labor market when she has no voice in the making of the laws affecting her." In this letter, she discusses arrangements for the January 1901 issue of Cosmopolitan. NAW III, pp. 235. Feminist Guide, p. 946.
