This was followed by college training, where he specialized in mathematics, literature, and Scriptural origins. He was a newspaper correspondent, teacher, university secretary, author, lecturer, publisher, and mining and metallurgical engineer. He was sent twice to the jungle of Columbia, South America, in search of lost Spanish gold mines.

In 1923 the Duncans created their signature roles in Topsy and Eva (Rosetta as the former, in blackface, Vivian as the latter), a musical comedy derived from the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. For this production they wrote and introduced the songs 'I Never Had a Mammy' and 'Rememb'ring'. A huge hit in its day, Topsy and Eva was subsequently adapted into a 1927 silent movie, directed by Del Lord with some additional scenes by D. W. Griffith.

This set of 12 postcards [actually 13] shows paper-cuts of opera painted faces in vivid and attractive designs and bright contrasting colors. The paper cut-outs of Yuxian in China's Hebewi Province are a special Chinese folk art.
