Todd was able to prove how many typists prepared the 1,308 pages of material (15 in all), and how many pages of material were deliberately altered or suppressed (271 pages!). One of the most attractive and blatant examples of the exploitation of his Mark Twain's name and image known. One side of this advertising sheet, addressed to a grocer (but never folded or mailed), displays five sacks of flour and two views of bountiful wheat fields. Oblong printed ticket blank with stub still attached (4 x 12 inches). Fine. On December 15, 1866, Twain boarded the "America" in San Francisco, steamed to Nicaragua, arriving on December 30, crossed the Isthmus, and boarded the `San Francisco' and steamed on to New York, arriving on January 12, where he soon published his first book and began in earnest his literary career. Advertising trade card consisting of a floral decorated card with instructions and pattern on back. When cut out, it creates a silhouette of Mark Twain. This card is uncut and in fine condition; these cards are often found cut out or removed from Victorian scrapbooks, and encrusted with glue residue. [WHITTIER, JOHN GREENLEAF] PHOTOGRAPH MOUNTED UNDER GLASS [n.p., n.d., ca. 1880-1895] 2 x 2 inches. Original albumen portrait of Whittier in old age, mounted under a thin piece of octagonal beveled glass with original faux morocco backing. It was a common practice in the late nineteenth century to mount photos with this kind of backing on glass paperweights, but this example is smaller and much too light for that purpose. It may have been intended to be framed and attached to a badge or ribbon for some kind of event or as a memento mori for use in a memorial service (Whittier died in 1892). This issue has an ad for Jack Wells' `Buzzin the Bee' (1916) on rear cover; we have also noted copies with ads for two different Irving Berlin songs. The cover illustration by `Barbelle' echoes the original Kemble drawings of Huck, but makes him look ignorant, a quality that Twain objected to in Kemble's earliest drawings. [n.p.,n.d., circa 1880] A fine albumen image of a mature Longfellow with snowy white hair and full beard, mounted on original imprinted card on which is written his birth date. In a slightly different ink his death date has been filled in, and a few of his better-known books listed in a contemporary hand.

[St. Louis, 1907] Black and white postcard of the St. Louis harbor boat `Mark Twain' at the edge of the shore with its gang-plank down, unloading and loading cargo. This is the rarer of the two recorded postcards known that picture this famous steamboat, the last steamboat piloted by Mark Twain. In 1902, after his visit to Hannibal, Twain stopped in St. Louis and rechristened the harbor boat `City of St. Louis' as the `Mark Twain.' Pasadena, California: Radiant Life Press, 1919. 8pp., folio, illustrated with four previously unpublished photographs of Twain. First edition, an offprint from the May, 1919 issue of `Physical Culture.' Self-wrapper. Nearly fine. This was privately printed by James, whose ads for his own books cover the last two pages. James quotes liberally from Twain's works, and gives an amazing account of how he came to get Twain to pose for the four photographs reproduced here. A very rare piece.… Leer más

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] HANNIBAL, MO. LICENSE TAG AND RECEIPT. Hannibal, Missouri, 1941. Window-mounted license tag, unused, with peel-off backing still intact (printed with mounting instructions), with the original receipt made out to a Hannibal resident. This was a city tag, that was required by the Hanniballian authorities in addition to the state tag. Mark Twain's portrait appears at the center of the tag itself which was intended to be stuck on the windshield. The ultimate example of Mark Twain ephemera, and a classic indication of the depth of the Twain identity in his home town.
