An original publication, 1995. xx, 146 pp., illus., index This book is the result of research done by Ellen Clinkscales Smith Rippy on her Smith and Sullivan family lines. Much of her work on the Sullivan history was facilitated by research previously available from other members of the family on the Sullivans, Brownlees, Dunklins, Hueys, Walkers, Clinkscales, Moorheads, and Gilkeys. Research into the Smith line was made more difficult because of some apparent conflicts in the line of descent and a lack of availability of authentic records. But, she finally placed the Smiths on the Broad River at Smith's Ford, in Cherokee County. John Smith was buried on this land and information on his headstone indicated that he had been born in Botetourt County, Virginia. Further research established that John's father was Henry Smith who had come to South Carolina from the Upper Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. Print on Demand Edition 2011. viii, 76 pp., new intro., new index James Hall was an eminent Presbyterian clergyman, educator, and patriot who made a missionary journey in 1800-01 which laid the foundations of the Presbyterian Church in Mississippi. This first history of the Mississippi Territory was a by-product of Hall's journey down the perilous Natchez Trace to minister to the scattered Presbyterian congregations in the area. More an intelligent and informed historical sketch than an actual history, he describes the country and its boundaries, its form of government, and discusses such topics as the soil, climate, produce, manners and customs, population, and trade and commerce. This volume retains significance as a rare historical document and an eyewitness account.

(vi), 32, (v), xxvi pp. Eufaula, Alabama sits on a bluff on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River which is the boundary between Alabama and Georgia in that area. When the author wrote this brief history, Eufaula (formerly Irwinton) had been in existence less than forty years. This history traces Eufaula's development from its origins in the 1820s as an outpost of civilization, through its development as a prosperous agricultural and mercantile community, to its situation at the close of the Civil War. The text includes lists of officials of the municipal government, churches, benevolent societies, school officials, and railroad time tables. An unusual feature of this reprint is the reproduction of the advertisements from the original edition, which give a nostalgic and colorful picture of the commercial life of the community in the author's day.

Holcomb, this volume contains abstracts of marriage and death notices from all York (or Yorkville) newspapers which could be located. An unusual feature of this book is the fact that the Yorkville Enquirer has extant a complete file of newspapers for the period of the Civil War, a time when few newspapers in the South continued to publish. The newspapers in this volume contain marriage and death notices not only from the York area, but also from nearby South Carolina districts Union, Spartanburg, Lancaster, and Chester, and from Cleveland, Gaston, and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina. In addition to the Yorkville Enquirer, which is the most complete, newspapers in this volume include: The Pioneer, The Pioneer and South Carolina Whig, Journal of the Times, The Yorkville Compiler, Yorkville Miscellany, and The Remedy.

(ii), (XXVI), 86 pp. David Fanning was the most notorious and successful of the Loyalist partisan leaders in the Southern colonies. Born in Amelia County, Virginia, he grew up in Johnston County, North Carolina. In 1764 he and his older sister were orphaned and bound to guardians. By 1773 he had journeyed to South Carolina and settled on Raeburn's Creek where he farmed and traded with the Indians. At the beginning of the Revolution, Fanning was an officer in a local militia unit in the South Carolina upcountry. In 1775, that region leaned in favor of the Loyalists and Fanning joined that effort. When hostilities began, the South Carolina Whigs with support from North Carolina defeated the Loyalists in the "Snow Campaign" of December 1775. Shortly after, Fanning was captured and this would be the first of fourteen times he was captured over the next three years. XIV, 153 pp., index + illus., maps This study of the first Spanish attempts at settling the Carolinas, and of the Chicora Indians, treats all European contacts prior to 1670. The author describes the earliest explorations of the new land, the Spanish settlement in 1526 at the mouth of the Waccamaw River across from present Georgetown, South Carolina, contention between France and Spain, the English colony, the Indians, and resulting rivalry of all parties for the land. The area covered in this study is the country extending along the Atlantic coast from Savannah, Georgia, to Wilmington, North Carolina, and inland including what is now northeastern Georgia and southeastern North Carolina with all of South Carolina in between.

Print on Demand Edition 2009. 200 pp., map Using all the early land grants and other records of the state, McLendon, who was secretary of state in Georgia at the time he wrote this book, put together a valuable study of Georgia's land disposition history dealing specifically with the lands acquired from the Creek and Cherokee Indians and the Georgia western lands in largely what is now Alabama and Mississippi. He discusses the headright and land lottery counties. Particular emphasis, however, is on the Yazoo Land Fraud, a massive fraud perpetrated by several Georgia governors and the state legislature from 1795-1803 by selling large tracts of land to insiders at absurdly low prices. Born in Virginia, Dale was active on the frontier as it moved westward through Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Based on personal interviews, the book describes his frontier adventures, his fights with Indians during the Creek Wars, his character and achievements, and relates the frontier and its customs in the style of the time in which he lived. Dale commanded a battalion of Kentucky volunteers against the Creeks in 1814 and carried dispatches for General Andrew Jackson from Georgia to New Orleans. After the war, he became a trader at Dale's Ferry in Alabama, was appointed colonel of militia, held various local offices, and was a delegate to the 1816 convention that divided the territory of Mississippi. He was a member of the first general assembly of Alabama and served in the state legislatures of both Alabama and Mississippi.
