Descripción:
The practice of fortune-telling through the analysis of the palm is found worldwide. Palmistry experienced a revival in the early- to mid-19th century, and this book reflects the growing interest of the time. Along with its quite wonderful drawing printed on its front cover, it contains eight additional full-page illustrations of various aspects of the practice.
Glued to the back endpaper is a four-page pamphlet, "A Sketch of the Science of Palmistry" by Ed. Heron Allen with not only an additional illustration, but also various illustrated ads for such cures as "Wright's Indian Vegetable Pills".
All in all, the book is in good plus condition. The cloth binding is somewhat chipped and the top and bottom of the spines somewhat torn. The title page has a gift inscription and the name of a previous owner. Incidentally, it is glued to a stub, suggesting that the first edition title page was removed, and this second edition attached. I found only one tear in the book, that is on the bottom of the first page… Leer más

Descripción:
The present volume contains the Laws of Toro (Leyes de Toro) in Latin as well as Antonio Gómez's extensive commentary also in Latin. Written in the city of Toro, Spain in 1505, the year after the death of Queen Isabella I of Castile, the Laws of Toro consist of 83 precepts or laws. Covering such issues as inheritance, marriage, and obligations to the royal crown, they guaranteed the social dominance of the families of the high nobility.
Antonio Gómez (born after 1500; died before 1572) was a Spanish jurist and priest. After completing his studies at the University of Salamanca, where he subsequently taught law, he became the Archpriest of Toledo, then the richest diocese in Christendom. His principal work is this commentary on the Leyes de Toro. First published in 1552, Gómez's work has become the most important source for that area of Spanish law.
Binding solid with some loss of the outside of the leather. Atractive and vivid marbled endpapers. On good qualiity paper stock with some water… Leer más

Descripción:
First published in 1775 as a response to the American Congress' Articles of Confederation and their subsequent "Declaration… setting forth the causes and necessity of their taking up arms", both of which were published in the pamphlet.
This pamphlet, here in its eight edition, became widely distributed on both sides of the Atlantic. In it its anonymous author, which could have been either James MacPherson, Sir John Dalrymple, or the Lord George Germain, sought humane solutions in dealing with the American rebellion. His persuasive appeal to the British public for the preservation of order and the support of the Monarchy was in stark contrast to much of what else was being published, which generally was filled with contempt and anger at the ingratitude showed by the colonists toward their king.
Front board detached. Pages 97 through 112 (Gatherings O and P) detached. Paper somehwat foxed throughout. Volume is complete and is a very good candidate for more sympathetic binding.

Descripción:
This is a chiefly overlooked and under-recognized volume of Homer that was translated and extensively edited and annotated by one of the most important sixteenth century scholars and Christian reformers.
Greek and Latin in parallel columns.
Sébastien Castellio (1515-1563) was one of the most important Christian humanist thinkers of the sixteenth century and an important early advocate for religious toleration, freedom of conscience and thought. Born in Saint-Martin-du-Frêne, France and educated in Lyon, he taught in Geneva until his conflicts with John Calvin led him to leave in 1544. He next moved to Basel, where this book was published, where he lived until his death.
Castellio wrote his first works on religious toleration following the execution of Michael Servetus for heresy in 1553. Although better known as a translator of the Bible into both Latin and French, this is the first edition of his translation and editing of the works of Homer from the Greek into Latin, published only two years… Leer más

Descripción:
Each section of the volume includes a finely engraved half-page portrait (82 in all) as well as a genealogy. A veritable who's who of Christianity, the book focuses on the major European monarchs; German, Austrian and Italian nobles; dignitaries; Burgundian dukes; and generals, both contemporary and historic. These include Cesare Borgia, Alessandro Farnese, William of Orange, Cosimo I de' Medici, Edward Prince of Wales, and Jeanne d'Arc.
Of special interest are the illustrations from such important New World figures as Montezuma, King of Mexico; Atahualpa, King of Peru; Hernán Cortés; Francisco Pizarro; Ferdinando Magellan; and Amerigo Vespucci.
The book contains a complete printed index in the rear as well as two handwritten indices of some of the more famous people. The first, in English, is on the first paste down. The second, in German, is on the recto of the first free endpaper.
Some water staining throughout. A so-called book worm has caused some damage on the outside margin of a few pages,… Leer más

Notable for the immense work going into its compilation as well as the wide range of writers on which Vergil drew, De inventoribus rerum assimilated a huge corpus of classical, biblical, and contemporary learning. First published in 1499, the book became a Renaissance bestseller.
