NAPLES: IGNAZIO RUSSO, 1753. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary vellum over boards. Foxing. Complete with the 15 engraved plates. Little is known of the author other than that he wrote another book on navigation in 1750. This work on the sector was translated into Spanish in 1758.By the time this book was published, the design of the European sector had become standardized. Compare this design, for example, with that in the fourth edition of the works of Ozanam seventeen years earlier (L'usage du compas de proportion, 1736). The physical design of Pagnini's instrument is better (with pegs and decorative tenons to hold the two legs in alignment), but the scales are essentially identical. The work is well illustrated with engravings showing exactly how a pair of dividers should be used to take the various lateral and transverse measurements.Pagnini provides eight tables that detail the exact markings for each scale. He also provides other material for reference use, e.g., he includes… Leer más

Rome: Nicolaes van Aelst, ca, 1589. FIRST STATE (of 1). Marigliani (Lo splendore di Roma, II.49) gives the date "ca. 1589". The watermark (apparently a shield with an indiscernible blazon) is obscured by the image. Hardcover. Fine. A fine copy, rich in tone, with broad margins (including partial deckled edges), with a little light marginal soiling and a tiny hole in the blank margin. Very lightly creased at the center, with an original paper guard on the verso. The numeral "13" in early manuscript at lower right, indicating the print's former position in a bound volume. An attractive engraving of one of the most famous and most widely recognized monuments of ancient Rome, the pyramidal tomb of Gaius Cestius. The tomb, constructed sometime between 18 and 12 B.C.E., is the only sepulchral monument of its type still extant in Rome. The Flemish émigré printer Nicolaes van Aelst arrived in Rome from his native Brussels sometime in the mid-1580s. He worked in Rome as a publisher until his death in… Leer más

Florence: Giunti, 1574. FIRST EDITION, first issue. Hardcover. Fine. Title page within an architectural woodcut border containing the Medici coat-of-arms and a small view of Florence. Printer's device at the colophon. Woodcut portrait of Cosimo de' Medici on the verso of the title-page. Foxed. Bound in attractive 18th-century colored paper over thin boards. Extremely rare. No copies in North America. This is a very rare first-hand account, commissioned by Francesco de' Medici, of the elaborate ceremonies in Florence for the obsequies of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519-1584). It includes minute descriptions of the elaborate funeral apparatus built for the occasion. Among those who managed the artistic aspects of the spectacle was Don Vincenzo Borghini, "one of the guiding spirits of the Accademia del Disegno, an adept inventor of allegorical themes for the Medici court", who worked together with Vasari on Michelangelo's funeral. When Cosimo died his body lay in state on a catafalque… Leer más

Bound in contemporary English calf, rebacked preserving the original spine. The boards are blind-ruled in compartments; there is an attractive red morocco lettering piece, gilt, on the spine. Rome: Antonio Lafréry, 1552. Hardcover. Fine. First state (of three.) A rich impression with wide margins, light marginal foxing and a little light soiling, extreme upper margin a little ragged. Inscribed on the pedestal: "LVPAE ROMVLVM ET REMVM VRBIS CONDITORES LACTANTIS ANTIQVVM AC AENEVM IN CAPITOLIO SIGNVM." (Ancient bronze image of the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, founders of the city, on the Campidoglio). Signed "ANT. LAFRERII FORMIS ROMAE MDLII". An icon of central importance to the mythology and history of the city of Rome, and an artwork that served as the nucleus of Europe's first public museum. This print, attributed to the French emigree engraver Nicolas Béatrizet, was issued by Lafréry in 1552, the year before he agreed to a partnership with his rival, Antonio Salamanca. After Lafréry's death the plate passed to his nephew Claudio Duchet. It was reprinted by Giovanni Orlandi in 1602 and afterwards (before 1622) by Hendrick van Schoel. The first definitive reference to this… Leer más

Venice: Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari e fratelli, 1554. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Contemporary limp vellum, colored edges, some light marginal foxing, v. light stain on p. 80. A very nice copy with the 18th-c. engraved bookplate of Felice Durando Count of Villa (1729-1791), famous for his erudition and his famous library. With the printer's device on the title page and at the end of the volume. FIRST EDITION of Giraldi's most important contribution to literary criticism and his most lasting influence on dramatic theory and practice. Almost all the main issues in Renaissance dramatic criticism are examined somewhere in his various works and prefaces. Giraldi rejected the Greek arrangement of plays into prologue, episodes, and choral odes and returned to the five acts of the Roman theatre. He reasoned that a good play should first present the argument, direct the argument toward its end, present obstacles to its resolution, offer a means of removing the obstacles, and end with a resolution, all… Leer más

Rome: Antonio Lafreri, 1550. Hardcover. Fine. First state. With Lafreri's excudit: "Ant. LafrerI FormIs Romae MDL" at lower right. Watermark "Duck in a Circle"(cf. Woodward 79-80). A fine impression, rich in tone, with light marginal foxing and light soiling, particularly in the lower right corner, and some trivial surface soiling to the image. An iconic image of the statue known as Pasquino, by far the most famous of Rome's 'statue parlanti' (talking statues) and the eponymous originator of the pasquinade genre. The statue was discovered in 1501 in the Parione district of Rome. Cardinal Oliviero Carafa, "the embodiment of humanist ideals, centering on the revival of antiquity"(Reynolds), erected the statue next to his palace near Piazza Navona, on the site of today's Palazzo Braschi, where it stands to this day. As early as 1501, satirical poems in Latin and Italian, variously celebrating or criticizing the pope, clergy, and nobility, or lampooning private individuals, were affixed to the statue.… Leer más

Augsburg: Ramminger, 1523. SECOND EDITION, printed in the year of the first edition (Basel.). Hardcover. Fine. Bound in modern wrappers. With a four-part woodcut "Wildman" border. Marginal foxing, light soiling. A very rare work by Sebastian Hofmeister, an early compatriot of Zwingli and an admirer and correspondent of Luther, considered one of the most learned and rhetorically skilled of the Swiss reformers. A Franciscan friar and humanist, educated at Paris, Hofmeister was a participant in the 1st and 2nd Zurich Disputations, the Zurich colloquies with the Anabaptists, and other important theological debates. Born in 1496 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Hofmeister was the most important advocate of church Reform in that city. "In February 1523 Adam Petri produced a work by Hofmeister, 'A True Exhortation to the Strong, Noble, Steadfast, Pious and Wise Confederates, that They not be led by False Prophets to Stand in the Way of the Teachings of Christ.' Rome: Nella Stamperia di Gio. Battista de Caporali, per andare all'Orso, 1729. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in later carta rustica. A fine, fresh copy on crisp paper. Very faint soiling to upper margin. A large historiated initial, decorative head- and tail-pieces. With the arms of Cardinal Polignac on the title page. A very rare account of the elaborate transformation of Piazza Navona to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV of France (1715-1774) and his royal consort María Leszczyńska (1703-1768). The Rococo painter Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1750), charged with staging the events, had the piazza "restored" to its ancient glory as the stadium of Domitian, the foundations of which are buried beneath the piazza and give the modern space its distinctive, oblong shape. The spectacle was captured by the Roman painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1765), who produced a painting of the Piazza in its glory, of which two copies exist. Basel: Adam Petri, 1519. FOURTH PRINTING (in the year of the first). Hardcover. Fine. Modern marbled wrappers. Lightly damp-stained, a few side-notes shaved. With an ornamental woodcut title border. A German translation, attributed to Spalatin, of an early Latin work by Luther on confession. In 1518 Spalatin had requested that Luther write a short instruction on how to confess. Luther sent him a Latin version of the present tract on January 24, 1519. The Latin original, apparently untitled, was not published. Luther later developed the text into his "Confitendi ratio," ("A Rationale of Confession"), which was issued in March, 1520. "[Luther wrote a series of tracts after posting the 95 Theses on October 31st, 1517, and before his final breach with Rome. In them is clearly traceable the progress that he was making in dealing with the practical problems offered by the confessional, and which had started the mighty conflict in which he was engaged. They open to us an insight into his own… Leer más

Octavo: 15.6 x 10 cm. 220, [4] leaves. Collation: a-z⁸, &⁸, s⁸, Rx⁸, A-B⁸
SECOND GIUNTA EDITION (1st 1519).
A tall, unsophisticated copy, in its original limp vellum binding (vellum stained, lacking ties, short split to upper hinge). The text is in very good condition with intermittent foxing, heavier in some gatherings.
A compendium of ancient geographical texts, including descriptions of the known world by Pomponius Mela, Dionysius Periegetes, and Gaius Julius Solinus. Shorter texts include a catalogue of the regions within the city of Rome, "De regionibus urbis Romae" by "Publius Victor". The work is possibly a literary forgery of the 15th century, presented as the work of a newly-discovered author. The name was coined by Pomponius Leto of the Roman Academy. The volume was edited by Antonio Francino (1480- after 1537), a scholar of great talent, who taught in the households of important Florentines, and who produced,… Leer más

Venice: Lorenzo Basilio, 1728. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary carta rustica. Untrimmed, with deckled edges preserved throughout. Fine condition with just a few leaves spotted. Extremely rare. OCLC and KVK locate 4 copies outside of Italy, only 1 of which is in North America (Harvard Law Library). The work has been attributed to Bartolommeo Mlechiori, who also authored a book on criminal law, "Miscellanea di materie criminali, volgari e latine, composta secondo le leggi civili e venete" (Venezia, 1741). The author's name appears only once in the book, on the final leaf of text as "Bart. Melchi."Problems addressed in Part I include: examination, by the court, of murder victims (with a special section on identifying victims of poisoning); identifying a murderer via cruentation (the common belief that the body of the victim would spontaneously bleed in the presence of the murderer); where to try murder by decapitation when the head is found in one jurisdiction and the body in… Leer más

Florence: Appresso Bartolomeo Sermartelli e frateli, 1608. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in early 20th c. quarter red Morocco and marbled boards (small repairs to head and foot of spine). A fine copy with scattered mild spotting. Complete with the folding plate of the banquet (signed "Mattheus Greuter excudit".) Two lines have been erased from the plate, as is the case in all copies I have examined. Manuscript foliation at head of first leaf. With the combined woodcut arms of Cosimo II and Maria Magdalena. Small woodcut of the Laocoön on leaf B4. Extremely rare. 1 copy traced in North America (Getty). First edition of these verses composed for a banquet, held in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence on 19 October 1608, celebrating the wedding of Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621) and Maria Magdalena, Archduchess of Austria (1589-1631). The songs are sung by the Nymph of the Arno, possibly the singer, dressed as a nymph, who sat upon a giant conch shell at the left-hand side of the dais -upon which… Leer más

Descripción:
[Augsburg: Sigmund Grimm and Marx Wirsung], 1522. ONE OF THREE EDITIONS printed in 1522. The first ed. appeared in 1521. Place, printer, and year from VD16. Hardcover. Fine. A very good copy in modern paste-paper wrappers. Small adhesion scar to blank portion of title, far from text. An early edition of Eberlin's "In praise of parish priests Concerning the useless sums paid out by the common, unsuspecting people for mass readings, funerals, internments, sevenths and thirtieths, etc. And in praise of parish priests and their necessary chaplains." This is the seventh -and the first composed- of Eberlin's "Fünfzehn Bundsgenossen" ("The Fifteen Confederates"). Eberlin offers advice on how to truly honor the dead, not by expending money and energy on funerals and special church ceremonies that largely support the "fat, full, hypocritical, self-serving, blackmailing monks, priests and nuns" but rather by providing for the family members of the departed, giving alms to the poor, helping the needy,… Leer más
