Little is known of the author other than that he wrote another book on navigation in 1750. This work on the sector was translated into Spanish in 1758.By the time this book was published, the design of the European sector had become standardized. Compare this design, for example, with that in the fourth edition of the works of Ozanam seventeen years earlier (L'usage du compas de proportion, 1736). The physical design of Pagnini's instrument is better (with pegs and decorative tenons to hold the two legs in alignment), but the scales are essentially identical. The work is well illustrated with engravings showing exactly how a pair of dividers should be used to take the various lateral and transverse measurements.Pagnini provides eight tables that detail the exact markings for each scale. The watermark (apparently a shield with an indiscernible blazon) is obscured by the image. Hardcover. Fine. A fine copy, rich in tone, with broad margins (including partial deckled edges), with a little light marginal soiling and a tiny hole in the blank margin. Very lightly creased at the center, with an original paper guard on the verso. The numeral "13" in early manuscript at lower right, indicating the print's former position in a bound volume. An attractive engraving of one of the most famous and most widely recognized monuments of ancient Rome, the pyramidal tomb of Gaius Cestius. The tomb, constructed sometime between 18 and 12 B.C.E., is the only sepulchral monument of its type still extant in Rome. No copies in North America. This is a very rare first-hand account, commissioned by Francesco de' Medici, of the elaborate ceremonies in Florence for the obsequies of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519-1584). It includes minute descriptions of the elaborate funeral apparatus built for the occasion. Among those who managed the artistic aspects of the spectacle was Don Vincenzo Borghini, "one of the guiding spirits of the Accademia del Disegno, an adept inventor of allegorical themes for the Medici court", who worked together with Vasari on Michelangelo's funeral. Bound in contemporary English calf, rebacked preserving the original spine. The boards are blind-ruled in compartments; there is an attractive red morocco lettering piece, gilt, on the spine. Aside from light wear and bumping to the corners, the binding is very well preserved. Internally, this copy is in excellent condition throughout. The Greek text is surrounded by the Greek scholia and flanked by a Latin translation, in smaller type. The second part is introduced by a divisional title page. Bound in attractive contemporary patterned pasteboards (corners bumped, minor wear.) The text is in excellent condition. The two folding engravings show the funeral monument and the catafalque. Clean tear (mended, no loss) to first plate. Marginal tear, not affecting image to second plate. The portrait was etched by Giuseppe Garofalo after a drawing by Pietro Giaconia. The 2 foldings plates (see below) were also etched by Garofalo.
An unusual funeral book of the late Sicilian Baroque, commemorating funeral rites for the prosperous Sicilian lawyer Giuseppe Maria Jurato (d. 10 October 1712), judge of the Grand Civil Court of Palermo and Prosecutor of the Royal Court. Bound in contemporary alum-tawed pigskin over wooden boards, lacking clasps but with the brass catches, with acorn tools and rolls of 3 of the Muses: Terpsichore, Euterpe (signed N.C.), and Calliope (signed M.A.). First title dusty, damp-stain in the first part of the Martial. Intermittent annotations in the margins of both works and some underscoring in the Tibullus. The three most famous Roman elegiac poets together with the great Roman satirist.

Paris: Apud Simonem Benard, Ex Typographia Dionysii Thierry, 1682. SECOND EDITION of the Delphin Vergil; this issue was printed "Ex Typographia David Roger 1689.". Hardcover. Fine. A very fine copy, bound in contemporary mottled calfskin, the spine elaborately and richly tooled in gold. The spine is separated into compartments by raised sewing supports. The second compartment bears a large red morocco label beautifully tooled in Roman capitals: "RUAEI VIRGILIUS". The boards are framed by two decorative rules. The binding is in excellent condition with only light wear, the corners lightly bumped. Internally, the text is in very good condition, with occasional light foxing and toning. There is a small dampstain in the gutter in the first two signatures of the Aeneid. The engraved frontispiece, with a central scene showing Arion and the dolphin (an allusion to the Dauphin) and a medallion portrait of Vergil, is just a trifle foxed. A very fine copy, printed on thick paper. The large, folding plate of the catafalque (51 x 35 cm.) is also in fine condition. An account of the funeral ceremonies for Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (d. 30 Oct. 1723). The ceremonies took place in the basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence on 16 May 1724.The volume offers us a comprehensive and minutely detailed description of the funeral honors and the decorations that had transformed the church of San Lorenzo. Chief among these was the catafalque built by the architect Alessandro Galilei. The engraving of the large panel is the work of Vincenzo Franceschini, after Galilei's design. Inscribed on the pedestal: "LVPAE ROMVLVM ET REMVM VRBIS CONDITORES LACTANTIS ANTIQVVM AC AENEVM IN CAPITOLIO SIGNVM." (Ancient bronze image of the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, founders of the city, on the Campidoglio). Signed "ANT. LAFRERII FORMIS ROMAE MDLII". An icon of central importance to the mythology and history of the city of Rome, and an artwork that served as the nucleus of Europe's first public museum. This print, attributed to the French emigree engraver Nicolas Béatrizet, was issued by Lafréry in 1552, the year before he agreed to a partnership with his rival, Antonio Salamanca. After Lafréry's death the plate passed to his nephew Claudio Duchet. It was reprinted by Giovanni Orlandi in 1602 and afterwards (before 1622) by Hendrick van Schoel. A very nice copy with the 18th-c. engraved bookplate of Felice Durando Count of Villa (1729-1791), famous for his erudition and his famous library. FIRST EDITION of Giraldi's most important contribution to literary criticism and his most lasting influence on dramatic theory and practice. Almost all the main issues in Renaissance dramatic criticism are examined somewhere in his various works and prefaces. Giraldi rejected the Greek arrangement of plays into prologue, episodes, and choral odes and returned to the five acts of the Roman theatre. A fine impression, rich in tone, with light marginal foxing and light soiling, particularly in the lower right corner, and some trivial surface soiling to the image. An iconic image of the statue known as Pasquino, by far the most famous of Rome's 'statue parlanti' (talking statues) and the eponymous originator of the pasquinade genre. The statue was discovered in 1501 in the Parione district of Rome. Cardinal Oliviero Carafa, "the embodiment of humanist ideals, centering on the revival of antiquity"(Reynolds), erected the statue next to his palace near Piazza Navona, on the site of today's Palazzo Braschi, where it stands to this day. A very rare work by Sebastian Hofmeister, an early compatriot of Zwingli and an admirer and correspondent of Luther, considered one of the most learned and rhetorically skilled of the Swiss reformers. A Franciscan friar and humanist, educated at Paris, Hofmeister was a participant in the 1st and 2nd Zurich Disputations, the Zurich colloquies with the Anabaptists, and other important theological debates. Born in 1496 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Hofmeister was the most important advocate of church Reform in that city. A very rare account of the elaborate transformation of Piazza Navona to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV of France (1715-1774) and his royal consort María Leszczyńska (1703-1768). The Rococo painter Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1750), charged with staging the events, had the piazza "restored" to its ancient glory as the stadium of Domitian, the foundations of which are buried beneath the piazza and give the modern space its distinctive, oblong shape. A German translation, attributed to Spalatin, of an early Latin work by Luther on confession. In 1518 Spalatin had requested that Luther write a short instruction on how to confess. Luther sent him a Latin version of the present tract on January 24, 1519. The Latin original, apparently untitled, was not published. Luther later developed the text into his "Confitendi ratio," ("A Rationale of Confession"), which was issued in March, 1520. "[Luther wrote a series of tracts after posting the 95 Theses on October 31st, 1517, and before his final breach with Rome. In them is clearly traceable the progress that he was making in dealing with the practical problems offered by the confessional, and which had started the mighty conflict in which he was engaged. A compendium of ancient geographical texts, including descriptions of the known world by Pomponius Mela, Dionysius Periegetes, and Gaius Julius Solinus. Shorter texts include a catalogue of the regions within the city of Rome, "De regionibus urbis Romae" by "Publius Victor". The work is possibly a literary forgery of the 15th century, presented as the work of a newly-discovered author.
